I use the oculus rift S with my set up. Pros- Immersion is like no other i have experienced and the real life feeling you come away with or experience while in vr is by far unmatched...........if you can handle the motion and not get sick that is. Some people i have heard do experience this and fortunately i dont. There is so much one could say but the best way to know is to honestly try it for yourself . All the points made in video where spot on . If i were to say the best thing about vr , it would be that ability and the knowledge, experience and skill learned and gained from being able physically look at the apex. This is something that has helped my race skills exponentially . I now find it hard to use a monitor , havent tried trips , but i cant not have that ability to physically turn my head at the apex . feels very uncomfortable out of vr. Which is ok as this is something that will separate some from ohters if they can use it to its advantages ..........and survive the sweaty hot mess it becomes as mentioned in video. It is unfortunately the only downside to it but again , as mentioned , it does add to the actual immersion of what a real car would be like . this is why its something ya gotta try . Sorry for the tldr length but since we are here , if you want to stream and vr at the same time there are some more things that need to be taken into consideration , such as maybe getting a second stream pc. Im sure the valve index will not have this issue as it would be native to STEAM ,but when using the Oculus headset and play a game through steam the Oculus software has to open as well. Things get merky when its Oculus App, Steam App, Steam Vr App, Simucube True Drive Software, StreamLABS OBS(or OBS), NVIDIA STREAMCAST(for camera but runs as a plugin with obs) and any other stream software like Voicemeeter Banana or GO xlr or whatever. What im saying is even with my Ryzen % 3600x , 2080ti and 32 gb of ram i have some issues . I am new to the whole content and stream game but i honestly thought i had a beast of a comp and it could handle all odf that but it can get what they call SKIPPY or STUDDER like when in vr if some process happens or soemthing and causes a spike somewhere . I have crashed bad because of it unfortuneately. Again in the video Valve Index is the only way to go i think to eliminate all the secondary app bullshit. but this has been my relatively new to sim racing experience . Sorry for the length i just felt the video was deserving of an honest experience. STAY SAFE AND BLESSED EVERYONE. ONE

i must correct myself i think here because describing myself as relatively new to sim racing seems like a few months. I have been sim racing for almost 3 years now but to me it feels like i am so new to it and by comparison i am very new to it . Others such as yourself and a lot have honestly been eating ,. breathing , sleeping sim racing and real racing for longer. So in that aspect i am as new as they come hehehehe. I did do some moto cross and field car driving as a teen but thats it LOL. Anyway jsut wanted to clarify . Respect to all. ciao

Awesome video! I had been racing with 27 inch triples and a motion rig for a few years and then purchased a CV1 in 2016 and now use an Index. I find it very difficult to go back and run in triples since diving into the VR experience. The combination of VR and Motion is something you must experience for yourself. It is simply amazing.

Totally agree. VR is the way to go. I had a few same-size monitors so I set them up as temporary triple setup... It looked really cool and was MUCH better than single monitor, but compared to VR I kept missing all the apexes. Being able to look through the apex is totally key and is what a driver does in real life. I am building a racing setup as a training sim as much as for entertainment. The VR headset is helping me to learn transferable skills. The other cool thing is I can see a watch a video on improving your driving, and then turn around and try what I just learned on the racing sim. It's just like being in an HPDE / racing school!

I have tried VR, single screen, and tried to get triple screen setup but gave up and settled on a 49 inch ultrawide. Triples have very nice FOV, but atleast for me, a total PAIN to set up. And not software wise, but physically. DO NOT cheap out on a triple monitor stand. Get something very heavy duty and highly adjustable, I spent HOURS trying to align the screens perfectly, if they are not aligned perfectly it is very distracting especially if you have OCD for that kind of stuff. I also live in an old apartment with uneven floors, so it was even more difficult. I never got them to align and gave up, and somehow I damaged one of the monitors continuously mounting and unmounting to align them. I would get something from simlab or build your own that you can align perfectly, or make a table with a round cutout for your seat. Also, if you live in an an apartment, triples are huge, and take up a lot of room. I gave up on triples and got a 49 inch ultrawide (Samsung CRG9). Only have had it for a couple days but I like it so far. Especially if you set it up as a "triple screen" in ACC/iracing/raceroom, you don't get the distortion from the curve. I bought TRACKIR to test with it soon, I have it 52cm from my face and you need to turn to see the sides, so TRACKIR should work nicely to get a little extra FOV. The cons mentioned in the video for VR are true, performance issue (don't bother unless you have a very high end PC, if you just race iracing you can get away with a 1080ti and a high clocked intel chip, speed matters more than cores in iracing), and comfort. I have a reverb g1 and find it very comfortable, especially if I keep my room cool. When everything work right however, the experience is unparalleled. PERFECT FOV, without messing around, you get a real sense of space. If you try VR, try a formula car. Sitting in a formula 1 car feels like youre a foot off the ground. And you can look at the wheels and suspension in front of you, its awesome. And racing inches away from someone is WAY easier in VR. You feel like a driving god wheel to wheel hitting your apexes because you can see everything. I tried both an index and a reverb, and I preferred the reverb. The resolution is simply much higher, and the reverb feels like its half the weight of the index, so more comfortable. The g2 should look even better. Driving with VR feels more natural, with monitors you need to learn how to "drive" the monitors in a sense. BTW love your channel, one of the best racing channels in my opinion.

Race Beyond Matter where is your sensor placed for your VR?
@chepilevski
@chepilevski 3 года назад
Evan Balbier I have two sensors left and right just behind the monitors and about meter above
@tigim101
@tigim101 3 года назад
Evan Balbier all games project the camera onto a flat plane. So it looks normal on a flat monitor. When you that take flat plane and curve it, you get a “fisheye” effect on a curved monitor where the sides are stretched looking. The more curved the worse it is. When you set it up as triples (3 400mm screens angled at 13 degrees for a 49 inch ultrawide), you render 3 flat planes, so you eliminate the stretched side images. You will notice this most on your mirrors, they will look huge and too big before you set to triples because they are stretched, when you set to triples they look like they have normal proportions. Only certain games allow this (setting up a single screen as triples) ACC, iracing, raceroom are the ones I know that work. Automobilista 1 and 2, project cars 2 don’t work so far, perhaps regular Assetto Corsa works with a mod of some short haven’t tried it.

@@chepilevski It just comes across and genuine and with real passion. I hope you continue- I have to say man, this may not go over well but here goes- I work for a gigantic tech company and have been an exec for many years here in Silicon Valley- I know the RU-vid founders from our early days at PayPal, same with the founder -Reid of Linkedin, Max Levchin, Peter Thiel and Elon Musk as well and many others- Years ago, before we became what we are now, we'd have conversations about what we hope the internet becomes- At least in part, a place, that not only gives people freedom, but place where we can share and learn from each other. I think your video is a good example of that ethos. I don't have time to go research in depth everything that I have a passion for so, I look to people like you who are smart, honest, and compelling to give me a 5-10-20 minute education on something they care about. Anyhow, FWIW I think people like you are what is really important about this technology and while I won't speak for them- I will say I know when they first started talking about RU-vid because they are really good guys they had hoped it would be used at least in part to educate. So again, thanks for dong this video- i think you have a ton of credibility on the topic and when people ask me questions (once I learn more) I will refer them to your channel. Excellent video and explanation. Now there's a even less expensive way of sim racing in VR, the Oculus Quest-2 with a 3rd party Link cable is actually quite impressive, it has a higher resolution than the Valve Index so the screen door effect is even less (I have both a Index and a Quest-2). Agreed, once you earn your VR legs (being use to the sensation and your brain being fooled), it is great fun, my favorite Sim Title for VR is AC, it's probably the best optimized for VR (I've not tried iRacing). As for those new to VR, to get use to it without feeling sick, just look straight ahead until you get use to the sensations, as you get use to it, you can start looking to the sides a bit at a time, once your fully use to it..... it's a total thrill to be racing down a long straight along side another car and looking over to admire that other car, very cool indeed! :)

All those comments (and obviously video itself) are making me rethink what to get for new sim rig. Lately I decided that VR has too many "unknown before buying"/cons and I should go for curved ultrawide or triple screen setup. For example - I mainly do sessions that exceed 2 or even 3 hours so I'm afraid that every session could be painful and less enjoyable (even though it would be amazing, immersive experience). Everyone is different so it's always personal preference/decision on what we prefer or think will better suit our needs. I'm upgrading my setup soon. I love immersion and realistic settings. My main sim is and will be ACC (I enjoy graphics and I get immersed more if the game look like real life) . With that being said I should theoretically go for Valve Index (or the other one mentioned in the video but haven't seen the prices yet).. BUT there are few cons that are pushing me towards ultrawide with eye tracker or triple screen. 1. Buying high end VR like Valve Index is a gamble for someone like me who never tried VR. I don't know how well I will adjust to VR and heard that some people had real problems with adjusting to VR (even after few weeks). 2. Performance while steaming on the same PC - even if I get Ryzen 3900x or high end Intel, 2080ti and 32GB RAM, I'm afraid it might not be enough (I want to go for very high graphic settings in ACC). Any advice on that matter would be appreciated. I'm still undecided if I prefer investing in VR and enjoy more immersive experience or go safe way with monitors and new rig + extras like button boxes along the way. I'm learning something every day and want to make good decision when I have all the details, costs and comparison. Any advice is more than welcome, thanks in advance. 🙏

VR immersion is mind blowing and it is total. You are in the car and nothing around you exist anymore. Triples give you a sense of freedom and easy to handle things. When you start to have a nice rig, wheels, button boxes, you can enjoy them and strive to improve it all the time. I agree with your comments 100% on the pro and cons. One thing on the cons for VR is prescription lenses. You need to 3D print the frame and install them but when you want to share the vr set with friends you need to remove it. Contact lenses can be used but it gets uncomfortable soon, at least for me.

You must play little with the resolution scaling in the Steam VR settings to get more ! Your PC is capable 🤛
@tobiaskroger7102
@tobiaskroger7102 2 года назад
You probably know this, but it is often confused by G2 users: Keep in mind, that the G2's native resolution is archieved by setting SteamVR general resolution to 50% (check the pixel settings), but the individual game resolution to 100% (of the baseline 50%, that is). So you have several ways to archieve too much supersampling (outside of the sims own supersampling settings - that will be another multiplier on top), and to tank the FPS while gaining only little quality. For me personally, also with G2, modern CPU and 3080, for most titles, the sweetspot is to archieve about 50-70% supersampling via combined methods. I usually let the base steamVR setting sit at 50%, the game setting untouched, and the steamVR game resolution turned up to 150-170% ACC needs some individual tweaking though (there are plenty of videos about it) , and some titles, like the flightsim DCS, seem to be impossible to get up to max fps on any setup ;)
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 3 года назад
I got the Reverb G2. Guys, if your main purpose for getting a headset is sim racing, just get the G2. It's the most comfortable and has the best resolution. The controllers and gamespace setup is not as good as Oculus but the clarity and comfort beat any Oculus device hands down. I got a Rift S which has moderate comfort and nice low latency, but pixels are absolutely visible, especially for objects off in the distance. Quest 2 has better resolution but does not natively interface with a PC and the solutions aren't great (require CPU/GPU cycles, introduces latency, not as clear as native Quest 2 apps) and the headset is pretty unconfortable, even with an aftermarket head strap.

When you talk about the "shimmering", that is actually an issue with ACC. I only recently bought ACC after spending most of my sim life in DR2 and AC, and I noticed the shimmering immediately. No amount of tweaking the graphical settings made it go away. It's unfortunate, but once I start putting laps down I don't really notice it.

VR is fantastic because the sense of scale is 1:1, you don't need to mess with FOV and being able to freely look around into corners is a game changer, looking ahead easily avoided me a couple crashes I wouldn't have seen otherwise on my single monitor as I can't reasonable do a 3 screen setup. I had WMR and claimed publicly many times that I will never go back to monitors :D but after like two years of being VR user I switched back to monitor and get myself 49 inch super ultrawide by ACER ( I could not fit tripples in my office ). To me the biggest cons were that - as you mentioned a lot of sweat - discomfort due to thsi factor in long races or trainings - sw issues ( or maybe HW issues ) where I had game crashes and other strange bugs ( guess Iam still a lucky guy to find all the possible issues with anything ) - and one more con, that I built myself a very nice cockpit at home and with VR, Iam not able to see all the nice HW I have here :D

I have the Oculus Rift S and now the HP Reverb G2. VR Advantages: Saves space. Saves money if you consider comparing it to having to buy 3 monitors. (NOTE: You do have to have or invest in a good video card to run VR well so depending on your planned 3 monitor setup costs might be similar). Disadvantages: Long session can become uncomfortable once you start sweating. HP Reverb has a 90 HZ refresh rate and limited to 90 FPS in iRacing. So compared to running regular monitors you can get faster refresh rates and FPS using good monitors. I think input latency is greater with VR also. So higher latency could impact your performance. That being said a lot of people including my self found themselves faster using VR. But some find a good triple monitor setup i.e. high refresh rates/FPS and lower input latency gives them a competitive advantage. Again for me immersion, space savings and relative cost (compared to triples) VR is the winner. But I do wonder at times if the higher refresh rates/FPS and lower input latency a good tipple monitor setup provides would make me just that much faster.

As far as sweating, there are face covers to deal with that, or portable cooling unit. VR immersion not only provide interior car details, but also exterior details walking around the car (room permitting). Wherever you look your inside another world. looking left/right and seeing other cars, without pressing keys is true to realism. At the present you can only interact with the steering wheel and shifting. It would be over the top if you could flip switches and push buttons like inside planes in VTOL flying sim. That would require a lot more software for each car and a learning curve for each car, but giving a choice of turning wiper blades on inside the car with hand tracking or a keyboard would be awesome. I gave up sim racing in the 90's, but VR made me spend a boat load of money and am a very satisfied consumer. The cheery on top, as you have mentioned is the family really enjoy VR with no interest in sim racing. Being inside a movie killing zombies in a desolate world is a dream.

I used HP reverb 1st one and now I have the 2nd generation of it. I think before racing and winning aganist others I must have fun. And the feeling like beeing in a real race car. its just incradible. Resolution is not an issue anymore. I feed it with RTX3090 and performance is very well with it. My only concern is FOV. If HP or other brands can solve that with greater fov and the same resolution which Reverb G2 have, it will be done. Noone would race with monitors anymore. I was using Thrustmaster T300 till last week. I was dreaming about simucube 2 after I watched your review and openions about it. Finally I could get it last week. All these comments (and obviously video itself) are making me rethink what to get for new sim rig. 🙏

Hi Rafal ! I will try to give you the most important Pro’s and Cons and you can decide yourself buddy:) ultra wide is actually 2x27inch monitors in ones ! It will take just a click of less space over triple monitors but the you will never be able to achieve that surround picture feeling because will always be just in front of you! For your needs this is the last option!!! Triple monitors in other hand are the best you can get from flat picture with the best possible eye candy graphics, more freedom as you don’t have to wear anything over your face and you will be able to enjoy your rig with the time ! I have video of how to alignment perfectly triple screens so setting them up will be pave of cake ! I suggest at least 27inch size till 32 and for future proof 1440p with 0.1mls ! VR is the best for full immersion and is my favorite but in your case and your long races + the ACC even with those PC specs you will struggle to take the best experience! So, I believe for you triple will be the best over option and you can always take VR in the future! So, I hope it helps brother!
@rafadrath7481
@rafadrath7481 3 года назад
@@chepilevski Your advice is golden as always! Thank you. Wide is off the list then but what is your opinion on eye tacker and curved wide? When it comes to triples - what's your opinion on flat vs curved? What PC spec would you recommend for triple 1440p low input lag, ACC at least on very high settings (so it looks realistic) without streaming. Same question for the same setup but with streaming without lowering graphic settings. By graphic settings I don't mean everything on X option - I'm aware that some things are useless and I spent 12h on my friend's PC playing and testing ACC graphic settings in my current rig. I just want to ineest in a PC that will give me smooth but beautiful experience at the same time. Not every option has to be on epic from what I understand. What VR options would you recommend at the moment? Valve, HP reverb? I'm new to VR and read about this upcoming HP reverb 2 here but I need to do more research on prices, date etc.
@chepilevski
@chepilevski 3 года назад
I haven’t ever used tracking but I have seen how it works and have talk to many people who actually use it and they are all happy!! Now I will logically speak about the combination of ultra wide and tracking... as the monitor is just in front of you you will not have to turn your head physically which means if you want to use the tracking you have to turn your head but keep your eyes straight which have no logic for immersion! About your second question of curved vs flat the main difference will be wen you look the curved at certain angle example( side monitors) you will be able to see more accurate colors and the picture will not be washed out but honestly, wen you set even 3 flat monitors wen you turn year head to the side ones is absolutely fine and you can see that on my onboard videos that there is not noticeable difference in colors between! And about your last question of VR headset I believe the HP G2 will be absolutely awesome but I’m bit scared about ACC and HP rev combo because of the crazy resolution will be hard for the PC ! Now, I believe you have to go at least RTX 3080 to cover all ACC experiences on Epic setting with 1440p and even with VR ! For streaming there is not big performance impact because those GPUs have separate encoder for streaming NVENC!!! Just make sure if you go for 3080 you need the last Gen CPU probably Intel 10700k to take the maximum of the card itself!

VR is by far the way to go for any sim racing game - the depth perception is unlike any other means of simulated experience. The trick with motion sickness is to make sure you have high framerate - run the game on low if you have to, the more frames the less likely you are to become sick from it. Another note with the sickness - Dont just try any game in VR, it makes a huge difference whether your in a cockpit or not. With the cockpit you have a steady point for your eyes to fix on (the dash and whatnots) If I didint have the dash or something stationary to ease the motion sickness I would not be able to do it. It does take a bit getting used to but its deffinitly worth it, I started simracing with a controller, upgraded to a non force feedback wheel and improved my laptimes by nearly 30seconds, went to a forcefeedback wheel and improved my times by another 5-10 seconds, switched from monitor to vr and shaved a consistent 10 seconds off my lap times. These are huge gains and is the only reason im able to compete online!

I'm running Iracing about 55 degrees on the monitors and sit about 24" away running 170 to 173 FOV depending on the car. What would be the correct visual angle? I understand depending on distance away will affect the FOV. I know it's what I'm comfortable with but, is there a correct angle for that size curved monitor?
@chepilevski
@chepilevski 3 года назад
I don’t think there right or wrong about this topic, I mean as long your picture looks correct is all fine ! For example , I think the most immersive way is to have your monitors exactly to 180 deg around your eyes position but which means if you turn your head exactly 90deg to the right the right edge of the screen must be exactly on your eye position if that make sense! So imagine now if you have your front screen 50cm from your eyes the angle will be around X number but if you have it 70cm from your eyes will be completely different to achieve that 180 deg surround picture! It doesn’t really matter what angle you have you can still have the perfect picture adding the correct numbers in iRacing ! All depends on how much space you have on your rig for the front monitor! On your size screens you definitely need to go behind the wheel base because you will need to have bit lower from the top of your base . Hope all that make sense buddy and thank you for the kind words ❤️

I tested the original kit on the SimExpo last time but I think the price for such experience is too expensive for what it is ! Of course this is my personal opinion!

I just sold my Rift CV1 after 3 years use for triple 27 inch monitors. I developed neck pain, headaches, and back numbness after endurance races. This can be mildly attributed to posture from the desk chair but I put most of the blame on the rift pulling my neck down for hours at a time. I just hope I can match my old lap times. After the few laps I have done (finished setting up last night) the triples feel like learning a new language.

Yeh man , I drive first time this year endurance races and last time 3h stint killed me ! I don’t have those pains you described but I definitely feel my head overheating with those races ! You will make your times for sure in few days or week but it feels so unnatural in the beginning!

@@chepilevski So after my first 2 weeks of triples after leaving VR I see what you are saying about lack of immediate consistency. The hardest thing for me now is the spacial awareness when driving side by side towards a braking zone. When I used VR I could inch very close before a braking zone to maximize entry, now I am unsure of how much space is available between our cars. It will get better with time I am sure. Pros: I definitely enjoy the convenience of not wearing the headset as it makes my head/eyes/neck feel better. I have already won a top split IMSA GT3 race at VIR last week, so I guess it is not so bad ;)

I have used original first gen Vive and then Vive Pro about 3000 hours in SteamVR (probably not all racing time as i think it counts when it is on) and last week ago i purchased used, almost brand new Pimax 5K plus and now last weekend Index. I am now testing which i should keep: Pimax 5K+ or Valve Index. I run now both on 120 Hz setting and i get around average 100 FPS with my setup. My first impressons after today using Index: Pimax has larger FOV and little bit better resolution but it has slight barrel vision what can be seen like example if i move seat very back. Hands look strange then. Index has better picture clarity and it is easier for me to read text on it, FOV is smaller but it is still quite nice and it is more comfortable and ergonic. Also picture is more consistent without distortion from whole area which is actually something which eats Pimax true FOV little bit. Index also feels more rugged and not like plastic toy as Pimax but on the other hand Pimax is more light. I need to run some races with Index now then switch back to Pimax and try headset in different games switching them to decide which i keep.

The thing is - when you put your heart and soul into you rig - its a shame when you can't see and interact with the rig ( when in vr). Yes vr is amazing - but I use both. I have my rig that I stand back and admire and vr for total immersion. If you have both - that's perfect. G2 will be a game changer ( I have G1).

Try set optic Perfect if you have settings. Probably some parametr bad. Or have eye issue or lokomotive. And max 30 min and brake 30. Give eye and brain use to. Good set could correct some eye issue bad broke yours eyes. Use vr 8n past a lot not to sim. See world and do thing the most hardcore i could find. Suit fly, parachute, sharks, war front, rolercoaster. Etc. And try skateboards and biggest ramps. After 20 min I was green. Old vr so bad effects easier to recognaze i think. Check how you feel on difrents HZ set. Maybe some help you join vr in future. Take care

ok i have triple g7 monitors and a valve index for a while now . i can tell u . u really need both the monitors and a vr. cuz vr is so nice from time to time but it gets uncomfortable after 30 min or an hour depending on you... triple monitors are much comfortable but a little bit less immersive. so for me if i had to chose only one option it would be a triple monitor. but you have to try vr as well. but if u have to chose only one the triple are the better choice .. for me at least .

Your CPU is great I use same on my workstation and for gaming is a beast but the GPU will struggle on ACC ! I expect from the G2 reverb to really push a lot the system!
