Brilliant! Can you address the elephant / unicorn in the room.... Org-mode in VS Code?

This is awesome, could you upload more videos on how to be proficient with these keybindings?

That's a bit tough to do. I can maybe do a stream at some point where I go over my workflow but it would require a reasonable presence of people to ask questions and such.

I hate using microsoft programs mainly because of telemetry, but I have to admit vscode is really good and really tempting. But spacemacs is still so much more I can't see myself switching yet. Anyway I'm happy to see you back Jack!!

I use VSCode only for two use cases (pair programming over live share and python interactive mode). In those cases it's very handy to have these shortcuts

Checkout vscodium.com/ It is an open-source binary distribution of vscode. I've been using it for 4 months and I recommend it. Exactly the vscode, but without telemetry.

I don't see myself moving away from Emacs any time soon (I don't use Spacemacs, just vanilla Emacs). But I do find this a bit interesting, that a modern editor includes an extension to make it behave like a classic editor. My son uses VSCode from time to time, perhaps I can trick him into trying this out. I do have a few questions. Is it possible to use Emacs keybindings instead of Vi ones? Does it come with Org mode? I use things like org-agenda a lot. How does the magit plugin deal with merge conflicts? Is it like in magit?

Heya. For normal emacs keybindings unfortunately you'll need to use just the standard emacs plugin for vscode (which doesn't have spacemacs like bindings). I haven't really tried the merge conflict thing but I don't think there's an ediff alternative here. For org there's a separate extension. It's very basic. Nothing's gonna beat emacs + elisp for org mode support it seems.

@@JackofSome Thanks for your replies. My son currently mainly uses vim but also VSCode. He has started playing around with Emacs and I understand he wants to settle on one editor. I think I'll let him know about VSSpaceCode at least, so that he can check it out.

Makes sense since he's already used to Vim keybindings. Btw this dynamic you have with your son is what I hope to have one day with my newborn son. Super heartwarming ❤️

@@JackofSome I wish you all the best. Actually, I don't really like giving advice, but just try to let it come naturally. My parents tried to control me and that didn't end very well. Not wanting go down the same lane, I decided to expose my kids to different things without trying to tell them what to like and not like. My son shares my passion for Japanese, programming, gaming and metal. Annoyingly he beats me at chess almost every time (I wish he was a bit younger so I could lie up a few "extra rules" to my advantage :p) My daughter shares my passion for math and cooking. She does both Italian (from me) and Ghanaian (from her mother) dishes. She's also into ballet, which is perhaps a bit odd since I couldn't dance if my life depended on it, and neither can her mother (so much for the myth that all Africans can dance ;). In any case, I try to support her passion as best as I can. As a parent, you have to learn to accept that your kids are going to go down their own path. Try to exert too much control and they may do what I did: rebel. If it hadn't been for my passion for the Amiga and graphics programming in general I doubt I would have made it through the '80s. I seem to remember that my only sober moments back in those days was while I was hacking away at some code, while listening to Slayer. (I just remember, I used this assembler called Seka, which had the most rudimentary editor you could ever imagine. Life before Emacs!) Eventually I found another great passion: languages. First Japanese and later Ga. I ditched the few remaining hopes of a normal life and decided to follow the road less traveled: I quit my job and moved to Ghana to immerse myself in the Ga language. In my parents' eyes, I'm the very definition of a loser, but I really could care less. Now I'm not one to tell you how to raise your kids and I know that at times it's really tempting to think that we know better than our kids (happens to me too), but letting kids experiment and figure themselves out can never be a bad thing, even if they might not share all your passions. Of course we all have our limits. No child of mine will ever be a Lazio supporter! That would be unbearable. We are all AS Roma supporters. ;) Once again. my best for the future.

This is amazing. Thank you so much this is the best chain of comments I've ever gotten. I've been wanting to follow the same path as a parent that you just laid out so it sounds like I'm going in the right direction!

I tried so hard to get the same features in emacs but I just gave up. I hope emacs' auto-completion and ein gets better in the future. VSpaceCode is a game-changer and from now on I will stick with vscode for programming at least until I graduate.

Been meaning to learn spacemacs/vim but I loved vscode way too much to do that. Looks like its safe to go in now?
@JackofSome
@JackofSome 4 года назад
Sure. If you're just starting out it may be better to just add the vim extension and get comfortable with those keybindings before taking the step to VSpaceCode

Played around with this mostly just using spacemacs muscle memory and it's is so close. I could almost see myself using this. Still end up in places that force me to use a mouse tho.

hey thanks for the video, can you share your keybindings.json/ settings.json files? I love the extension but some of these shortcuts just don't work for me.

Hi, when installing the extension, in the keybindings.json appears a button with "Define keybinding (ctrl+k ctrl+k)". What I have to do with this?
