In this episode of Shannons Club TV, Mark Oastler & John Wright take look at the Holden's that crashed Ford in the showroom and on the racetrack - The VT & VX Commodore.
I remember when the vt came out I really wanted 1 but was an apprentice so couldn’t afford 1! And I still remember the first time I laid eyes 👀 on a AU I nearly spewed!!!
Got myself a VT SS 5 litre. Really nice car to drive, I still remember seeing it when it released at the motor show and I put up a poster of one on my wall. Still a great looking car
Got me a VT SS series 2 in Bermuda Blue with 3 pedals. 260,000km and still going strong. Did a track day last month and it held up well for a 20 year old car. VT SS wheels are still my all time favourite factory wheels.
was in high school when the Sting Red VT series 2 R8 came out with the LS1 and 6 speed. Not a chance could i afford one for many years. Very happy to now have 1 parked away in my shed in Mint condition. Such a fun car to drive, and still looks mean 21 years later.
I purchased my storm grey executive with 50ks on it in 2005. The previous owner was the original owner. She optioned for a 5.7l gen 3, 6 speed with lsd and FE2 suspension, I don't know why she didn't just get the SS, but I'm glad she did, I still have and love this car 14 years and an extra 100k (now 140 000) and she's staying with me.
VT & VX's were not mechanically identical VX Series 2's brought out a whole new rear suspension that prior VT - VX Series 1's suffered "squatting out" all too often. Spring & shock absorber rates were different. Anti-roll bars were different sizes. Braking system was marginally different but vastly improved with the introduction of Bosch 5.3 Along with VX's having much better build quality again over the VT VX & VX Series 2's had 4 airbags on higher trim models (dual front & side front airbags) Mechanically the 3.8L's from VT - VX couldn't be anymore different 😂😂😂 VT's had a 2 piece rear main seal, different intake manifold, different pistons, etc VX's brought out new pistons, faster computer, new intake manifold, new single piece rear main seal, etc etc Basic architecture was similar but internally different. Transmissions were improved significantly over the VT when it comes to responsiveness, programming, etc
I have a immaculate VT SS 5ltr 97-98 model and I bought it with 140;00 kph back in 2002. Its still in mint condition no modifications and I have only done 40;000 kph and it is a beautiful car never been on dirt roads never had food or drinks in it still got the new car smell and never been thrashed or burn outs and to this day it has never missed a beat and wouldn't sell it. Best comfortable car I have been in. And again it's show room condition all stock standard 1 owner. Full credit to Holden.
I bought a really cheap VT S pack original white paint in great condition & low kms 3 days ago. Goes beautifully & lovely to drive. Now going to get rid of my Ford Territory that I could never 'gel' with. Love my new old Holden & all my friends do too!
@@BrainztormProductions supercharged or not the Ecotec was a far better engine then what replaced it, the dreaded timing chain stretching alloytec V6, more power yes but reliable absolutely not
@@chadgilmore5046 dont worry it will start, every single one dies, my VZ made it to 340,000 so it did ok i guess but id spent 8k in just repairs before the chains went, so i was done with the car at that point.., also have fun with the thermostat when the seal lets go, there at the back of the engine and require the transmission to be removed to be replaced
The 2 best commodore ever made, didn't weigh too much compared to newer models. Looked better than most other models. Interior much better quality than newer models and nicer than older models. Engines cheap, reliable and easy to fix.
I picked up my '01 VX Commodore back in early 2018 as a cheapie first car/fixer-upper and I honestly wouldn't want to daily drive anything else, it's my favourite car and I don't think I'll ever get rid of it. The Ecotec V6 has plenty of power to spare and is super responsive, it handles like a dream and (especially with the SS bodykit) its looks are mean and still hold up to this day.
Never mentioned is the rare super charged versions I own a Vs supercharged Calais I read that they had to lower the KW because it made more power then the V8 version and Holden did not want to loose sales of the V8s
Nice to see an original one without it being a bogan car or driving like a lunatic in traffic with no clear coat, 2 Chrome wheels and a steelie and space saver.
I live in Brazil where Commodores (VT and VE) were imported from Holden, rebadged as Chevrolet Omega. I own a 1998-1999 model, still running strong. In 2011 GM Brazil ceased to import Commodores.
Hairy Scary He’s just a Falcon fanboy, trying to give the falcon some relevance. There are plenty of other Ford Falcon channels for him to confess his love for Falcons.
@@jayden793 yeah, i like some Falcon's too. But I dont go on a Commodore thread and rave on about Falcon's. They've got their own channels. You dont go there and rave on about Commo's , right?
I keep my VX as original and shiny as possible , and I think it's ok to just add a modern touchscreen sound system with better speakers. My next project, hopefully is to install noise and heat insulation pads.
The defenition of a clean vt/vx... All stock all original looking like it did out the showroom...not lowered n riddled with aftermarket/stolen parts ...kids these days have no clue
I have a 1998 Vt 9c1 ex cop car 304 its done up as a Vx SS it has electric windows and has done 198.000kms, motor still runs strong only problem is now i have found water in the sump and my local holden dealership quoted me $700.00 to replace the INLET manifold gasket Other wise it still Runs Great For a 20 year Old car
I love my vt commodore but the interior is terrible now. Roof falling down and need to upgrade the interior. The electrical issues are a mess, petrol cover snapped off and the drivers seat faulty. Apart from that, the mechanics are excellent. Only 150,000 as of last week 😊
6th gear aint for goin up hills John. 3rd or 4th . maybe a wee flicck into a corner here or there in 2nd then back to third. You get the picture Bro. Sharpen up fella.
then if the VT/VX race car was so superior why did HSV see it fit to get the AU super car weighed down and its aero package reduced as per usual when Holden could not build a superior race car instead of engineering a better race car they nobel the competition as always
I still dislike holden. And I have a supercharged vt Calais. Supercharged and still just keeps up with a Barra. 😢6 cylinder motors can’t be compared. V8s tho holden slapped in that. Iv owned a lot of both and barras take wayyy to much shit
The operative word being "perceived" to be superior to the Falcon, due to a ridiculously biased Murdoch media campaign, they went well on the race track but on the road they are rubbish, the VS was a better car to drive
