fun fact: The band has absolutely 0 rehearsal with Purdie before these shows, so everything here (especially Joe and Bernard's grooves) were by the seat of their pants
Fun fact: I was doing the bands monitors for this show and just before Purdie went out on stage he asked me to turn off everything in the drum mix except for the kick drum. No rehearsal, no soundcheck and basically no monitor mix and then goes on to jam that out....great show!
It must be so amazing to play with a legend like Bernard Purdie. Easily one of the most influential drummers in history. If you listen carefully to his solo, you can even hear where John Bonham got a lot of his inspiration.
The first song is his 16th note groove. He’s doing the ghost notes in place of playing all 16 notes on the hats but it’s more of an “in the cracks” feel than a half time shuffle. Outstanding
I am sooooooo glad you have this recorded and posted... How awesome to see Vulfpeck with the man, the myth, the legend, Bernard Purdie himself and pull off the best cover of "Something" I have ever heard... Once again, thanks for posting for those of us who weren't fortunate enough to have been there...🤘🤩🤘
I feel like joe dart just was not playing with purdie at all. I felt tension and disagreement between them the whole time. Maybe purdie wasn’t catching things, but this probably wasn’t super fun for him.
