My '68 Beetle needs a new ignition switch, but which should you buy? The ~$25 switch made in Taiwan or the ~$50 switch made in Germany? This somewhat off-the-cuff comparison of the two may help you decide.
Oddly I too am working on a 68 beetle… no hard start though. I’m rewiring as the previous owner, well left a dangerous mess. I also was concerned about the lack of a fuse for the high current long run. Always add a fuse as close as possible to the source. My option was to add the fuse at the point where it leaves the regulator before the light and ignition split. Really, the should be a relay for the headlamps so that the switch doesn’t carry the current… thanks for sharing. What triggered all this… My ignition switch wiring had a fuse… 14ga with a 30A in-line and the wiring had melted shorting to the column…
Great video I have a 68 beetle sunroof . Having trouble finding the German ignition switch . Do you have a link ? Thanks keep up the good work on RU-vid
It's in the service manual...basically remove the steering wheel and bushing underneath, loosen turn signal stalk assembly, remove two screws holding the ignition securing bracket, insert key and pull cylinder out slightly until spring can be seen in slot at top of housing, then stick a thin wire into the hole in side of housing to release cylinder
