How to change ignition switch on a 1974 vw volkswagon super beetle, thing

(Excellent video!)...If you don't have a key and you're removing the ignition switch to find the key code you'll run into the problem of being unable to remove the ignition housing because of the lock mechanism. I figured out an easy way to do so. You'll need a small paper clip or strong but thin needle. When you go to pull out the ignition mechanism you see that it locks without the key. You can slide a paperclip or thin needle or small thin strong sheet of metal to the left side of the housing which will hold the lock inside while simultaneously pulling out the ignition housing.

Right on. Not fun getting to the switch but my switch contacts were bad and that solved the problem. Is that rectangular "pin" with the angle what locks the steering column? I want to remove that function altogether. It's on a 356 replica with VW components that doesn't leave my sight.

I am having starting issues.... how did you know you needed a new switch and not an entirely new starter? My problem is that I turn the key (SOMETIMES) and nothing happens... no crank, no click. This can last for a while of turning the key back and forth, or it will start up fine on the next turn. Thoughts?

Im' replacing the whole wiring in my 74 Super and was wondering is there a good source for the steering column wiring.

What size is the socket used to remove that bolt that holds the steering wheel on?

So would this process be similar to what I might have to do on a 74 dodge dart? the actual switch is fine as far as I'm aware it fires up like a dream but the lock cylinder has a lot of slop and play in it in the column and it takes about three minutes of dinking with it before I find the right position to adjust it to so that the tumbler holes with actually be accessible and i can fit my key in. Not sure how to describe it better than that.

hi, if the switch is original and the car has lots of use. odds are that you need a new switch. your problems sound like it could be a switch or a loose wire.

I have a 73 super beetle and the keys just got crushed in my old car. I was thinking I could go to a wrecking yard and get an ignition switch and the key for the bug they have

what if you dont have the keys for the ignition switch/lock cylinder? how do you get it all out..had to break the tumbler cuz the previous owner lost the keys and i had to turn the wheels to load it

Does any body know what would cause the blinkers not to shut off, new switch just won't click off. Does it have something to do with wiper switch. 74 vw beetle.

Do know where the radiator is? I just bought a 73 Super beetle. And can't find it.

My advice replace all the wiring harness fires will kill your car nothing but burnt be out there also invest in a blazz cut suppression system
