Anyone pondering rear apron removal just do it. It's a game changer in so many ways. It definaly helps break the ice on body mods as well as true 15 minute engine swaps

Pj Dillon yeah it’s very daunting the first time but so worthwhile

I planning to do a removable apron on my 56, getting an engine in and out of it is a major pain.

Obviously the Kubelwagen has a removable rear section for ease of maintenance, the beetle would definitely benefit from a removable apron.

I've thought about taking mine off and leaving it off.

The problems with doing that is there’s no catch for decklid anymore and no seal to stop the fan sucking up all the heat off the muffler and heads.

@@BoostedVW I can add pins to the decklid and I don't think the heat would be a big issue unless you're idling a long time. Moving would tend to suck it away

@@randall1959 it doesn’t work like that, those fans at highway RPMs suck in a lot of air and it takes the path of least resistance ie. through the now gapping hole at the bottom. I’ve rebuilt a lot of engines that were cooked from people driving with the seal and breast plate tinware missing.

@@randall1959 it’s different with buggy’s and sand rails as the whole area is open, not just a gap at the bottom directly above the muffler and heads funnelling all the heat up. Give it a shot if you want, it’s not going to die first trip but over time it kills the exhaust valve seats first. Those vw engineers spent a lot of time getting the system right.

@@BoostedVW Would raising the deck lid get rid of the heat?
