Gday all, I'm Joel, self confessed Volkswagen Addict and Aussie Macadamia Farmer.
I live on a 100acre Macadamia plantation on the east coast of Australia and am a tinkerer of all things Mechanical and electrical be it household, agricultural or automotive.
I'm into all things car related but my real love is old VWs. I try to make vids that will be of interest to people but as always it's hard to please everyone.
My farm vids are mainly put up so the friends and family I don't see real often can find out whats happening on the farm and see what I'm up to.
Nice video i have a Subaru Forester 2009 i have 180,000 miles on it ej253 in it and still on the factory head gaskets and timing belt i no I’m pushing my luck but when you pay $2000 and drive it all almost 4 years with very little maintenance who cares cheap transportation that’s what I’m all about these days. I don’t really care about speed anymore.
❤@4:50(ish) Thx for talking about the valves not moving if you’re at top dead center. I got in a hurry and pulled out the distributor before setting to TDC(valve 1). I was having a mild freak out and I remembered your video! Life saver!❤
Great video I have the same problem as yours, but when i put a new oil it wont start, i need to drain all of it and it will start. Without the oil its kinda risky, do you have suggestions about it ? thanks
Thanks for the video. I just did this to a 74 standard beetle since i converted to front disc brakes and replaced spindles and all. I have a feeling I didn't seat the races correctly, new calipers wouldn't bolt on and after doing some grinding and getting them to go on now my wheels won't turn freely after bleeding the brakes. Races not seated correctly probably making hubs and rotors not going back far enough hence the caliper issue and now seized wheel after bleeding the brakes. Sound about right!? Gonna take it all apart tomorrow and seat the races in some more.
Thanks for sharing your insight!! Super helpful! Just one quick question: where did you actually make the connection? Did you tap into the original wire that extends from the harness that connect to the switch or did you tap into the fuse panel?
Hi Edgar, assuming you mean the accessories wire from the ignition switch? My car being Australian built didn’t have that wire at all so I ran a new one from ignition switch plug to the spare #7 fuse.
Joel, I cannot believe how helpful your videos are, even all these years later. I just watched this one as well as the LED headlight one and the window scraper one. All will be necessary for me very soon
At the time of watching this video is 3 years old - after taking my lock to the locksmith I was told there was no way my decklid lock could be rekeyed to match the door/ignition - too old and not the right barrel. Didn't even take it apart. Today I tried this and it worked a treat. Now I have one key which opens all three locks.
What clutch and flywheel did you use? I have put a EJ 251 in my 1974 superbeetle. Having issue with clutch slipping... My flywheel and clutch is a 215mm.
Mine is a 200mm flywheel with an Exedy HD clutch. 215mm clutches are bus so should have been ok if brand new. Shouldn’t be too hard to get a HD clutch from Kennedy or similar for it.
@@BoostedVW Thanks for the info. In hindsight I should have gotten the 200mm. Just so much more to choose from... I was thinking bigger is better! Which it is, but not much good when you can't get the pressure plate you want for it.
I would love to go for a drive with you. I had a 1973 Superbug "L" colour "Flipper Blue". I'm blind and Oscar was the family communal car. Oscar had Monroe shock absorbers in the rear so the rear rode high which gave a mor steadier ride.
The big black wire connect in between battery one post and alternator 2012, second yellow wire connect to internal regulator diode. Third is bring up the green wire to the transistor inside the alternator regulator. And where is the rest of the red wire for ignition connect positive coil 12 volts temporally primary circuit and negative connection ignition orange wire. The long white wires for head light and tail light Volkswagen no AC cooler super beetle. Maybe a automatic transmission to the rear engine instead 4 speed transmission from Westphalia super stock modified Wolfsburg at Porsche Spicer Detroit Duesenberg modern Custom Craft.
Your regulator looks like this Computer ECM and is place in newer super beetle 1976 located at where at the relay box atop the old generator but you have change it from alternate conversion pro hardware kit that you can throw it out the generator.
How to install a VW distributor video shows everything about installing a distributor EXCEPT actually installing the distributor. One second its not installed. The next second its already installed.
@@BoostedVW I have done it many times. I just thought it was kind of ironic that the name of the video describe the only part that is not in the video also, there may be someone who has no idea and hopefully your reply helps them since there's nothing about it in the video
Thank you for posting a helpful video. I just installed relay yesterday but one problemo: The moment i reconnect the battery, the car attempts to start rigjt away and the negative cable started to spark the battery post. I disconnected it right away. What i do wrong? 😅
Hi there’s a few things it could be, first up just check your wiring, make sure the power from the battery isn’t mixed up with the wire from the ignition switch, if they are back to front that will happen. Also if it’s a relay that has a terminal 87a that will happen, it needs to be on 87 instead. Other possibility is a faulty relay. Good luck
I have a '67 and my door lock are quite difference. Same process though. Thank you for this video. Believe it or not, months ago I brought these to a locksmith, and a shop that specializes in air VWs and both said they couldn't do these. I just wanted all the locks to match the ignition key. Did it myself. Thank you!!
Thanks for sharing your build. It’s answered a lot of questions I had about the cooling system configuration and line routing. One thing I’m struggling with is how to routing the cooling lines from the frunk to where they attach to the pan. The part where they either go thru all the lca, steering linkages or under, or above then down…I can’t seem to get any good video or pictures of that routing. Can you shed some light on that particular section of cooling line routing? Also, did you run the cold side coolant line down one side of the pan and hot side down the other? Or are both lines on the one side that you show in the video? Thank you! J. (DUNGBTL)
hello thank you for the videos and effort only stupid people doesn't appreciate hard work doung a video to help others and in addition to the valuable info that others hide to make money .
Completely unrelated to the video, I have a question as I look at the photo of this VW. Why did VW use outside door hinges? Seems like it would easily rust. American cars didn't do that. Just wondering.
@hull5768 you have to remember the beetles design is from the late 1930s, if you look at American cars from that same era they also has external hinges. VW were just keeping costs down not changing the design but they did use hidden hinges on more upmarket models like karmann ghia and type 3 and 4.
@@BoostedVW drained & flushed. blew stuff out, wire brush here and there, inox spray, new spark plug, electrical contact cleaner in the plug hood, a new pull cord housing, fresh petrol ....and it started on the second draw. Stoked!
@@Rustsamurai1 nice work. Both the mower and wood chipper I got going with nothing more than fresh oil so it was quite depressing seeing how many mowers and other machinery were thrown on flood rubbish piles during the clean up.
@@BoostedVW Indeed. There was one bloke going around in an old ute; I helped lift a few into the tray. He was intending to fix and sell. It's a bit sad they were discarded in the first place. I rescued, fixed and returned a few from my street, post flood. Until then I'd done no small motor work, ever. I've three air compressors I've yet to have a crack at.
Hi, did you change the springs on the maxx struts? I have ones and been looking for a springs with a higher rate but can find them anywhere ( because the diameter) Thanks for the video, so much info and nice tips!
Well spotted, yes it was quite the mission. Topline use custom ID springs (60mm from memory) which is much smaller than the common coil over size I ended up having new spring cups machined up to suit 65mm ID springs. Jon at Topline has since come out with the yellow springs which are firmer but I would imagine still not firm enough.
I was looking for a video like yours. I have a 91 VW Corrado I've owned since 2001 it needs new door handles that work with one key your video could help so much. Thanks.
Greetings and great job on the videos. Question I'm replacing the barrel on my 76 beetle and there is no little hole to insert the wire and push. None! I removed the key and cleaned everything completely. No hole. Any thoughts? Thank you.
Hi Andy, the hole was done away with in later models as a security measure to stop people popping the barrel out and using a screw driver. It’s fairly easy to add, you drill the hole in line with the key head in the off position and 13mm in from the edge of the housing. Had to do the same with one of mine.
