Hey, great video. One question though. At 2:13 you show a parts image of the Steering Shaft Clamp and Steering Box Lock Plate. Where does the Steering Box Lock Plate go?
Very helpful. Thanks. I have a situation where i can turn really good to the right but my turns to the left are terrible. I do have some questions of alignment adjustment from "total out of spec" to correct. Do you know how many turns from lock to lock is the stock vw gear box ? I guess that would vary depending on steeinr wheel size but im trying to get an idea of why im having this weird turning issue. Looking for a factory service manual now.
You can turn it counter clockwise until it dead stops. Count the rotation while turning it clockwise until it hits a dead stop. Then divide the rotations by 2. Whatever number you calculate, begin to turn it to that number, that should be your center. Or you can visually see the center.
I have a spare steering box I have play in the original it was supposedly adjusted to the max, before I replace the gearbox the donor box what kind of gear oil do I use and what to check before I attempt to install
Thank you, I'm guessing the donor steering box is OEM I didn't look for the VW emblem but examining it how would I know if there's any adjustment needed before installing it? When I attempt to drain the grease it's probably never been changed should I use some kind of cleaner and drain it again before I put fresh grease? What grease would be the best? Thank you so much and best regards
I replace the steering couple on my Ghia for the 1st time. I did something wrong. Steering is way too tight and turn signal lever only moves with the steering wheel. Any thoughts?
It’s binding somewhere. I would replace the bearing that is in the steering column by the steering wheel. Tighten the steering column and turn signal assembly. More than likely the new steering coupler is a little thinner which would shorten the steering shaft causing binding. I think your coupler is fine, which points to the steering column bearing.
