@@json8172 oh they definitely are. But that’s the fun in it. I did all the major mechanical things in the beginning of ownership (belts, hoses, water pump, axles) so now it’s really reliable and I can focus on smaller upgrades and such.

@@OlisGarage Being they are so easy to work on compared to new cars. Yah, its not so bad. Just 40 year old parts starting to fail.

Flush it well. It might take a few flushes to get it clean, but it will be well worth it.

Thanks for the video:) I was wondering if you cover mk3 GTI's at all? Having issues with rear lights, turn signals not working and turn signals in front get brighter when brake pedal pressed in. All bulbs seem to work. Cannot figure it out! .......FRUSTRATING!

With top fill radiators, what is the fill line? Best I have found is 1 below the fill neck, with no specific unit of measurement (I assume 1 inch). With your method of mixing, since you cant guarantee all distilled water is removed from flushing, adding 1/2 capacity or concentrate makes sense, but one still needs to know what "full" is. I am flushing in a couple of days and will err on the side of 3.25L concentrate, and no more than 3L of distilled water (assuming I can even fit that much) if that reaches around 1" below the bottom of the neck. Does that sound correct? Also, that 6.4L is in reference to your video, I'll double check the table in my Bentley (has a nice ratio chart for different temp ranges as well)

I’ll get back to you on how high to fill it. I think I have a copy of three scirocco manual. I think. Fantastic question!! I like your thought process. I would do that, and then buy a refractometer. It is a device that can be used to measure ethylene glycol (and also alcohol) content in water. People use them often when they brew beer. With that device you can precisely figure out what your mixture is. I would recommend a 50/50 unless if you live in Alaska or somewhere really cold. But absolutely, use that chart in the Bentley once you figure out your concentration via refractometer. I just recently bought one from Facebook marketplace for $5. Don’t forget, you can always remove a little coolant from your radiator with a small hose and then adjust with water or antifreeze. But then to mix it properly you have to run the car until the thermostat opens. Just something to keep in mind

@@OlisGarage I ended up finding it in my Bentley. One the outside of the fill tube, there are two lines, starting at around 1.5" below the rim. The bottom is min, the top is max. On the inside of the fill neck are corresponding marks, none of which are very easily seen, nor are they explicitly marked "Min, Max, Full, etc." By those marks, I was VERY low on coolant, which would probably explain most of the issues I have been seening (I just bought the car a couple of weeks ago). Good question. I need to make a video on that. It’s from a mk1 scirocco. Part number 171121253. Just make sure that the one you buy has the little feet on it and the coolant temp sensor hole on the side where you fill it.

Hi Oli your videos really help i have an 88 cabriolet. But i have a low compression problem in my engine and a steering column that has a lot of play to it and im not sure how to fix either.

The steering column has a bearing that usually fails (well the plastic race fails). I will be making a video on that eventually as I recently ordered the parts. Low compression....that requires the typical low compression fix of either new valves, rings, or both. I do not plan on making a video on either of those repairs anytime soon.

Hey oli, still waiting on the video for the power steering pump removal. As it’s a tedious job on its own. Currently trying to flush. But the manual doesn’t offer that much help.

I have a couple questions: Do I need to remove thermostat to use "flush additive", or is it ok to flush the coolant with thermostat installed. I have power steering on my Cabby. I can reach the hose to remove from Thermostat housing without removing the power steering...is that ok? Thank you for your videos, great content and quality!

If you add the flush additive with the thermostat installed, then you have to make sure it gets hot enough for the radiator fan to cycle. Otherwise it will not flow through the whole system. (Radiator fan cycling indicates thermostat opening). If you can get to everything without removing the power steering pump, go for it. But I definitely recommend replacing your thermostat because it is a mechanical item, and there is also a rubber seal in there. Additionally if you don’t remove the thermostat, you will not be able to fully flush the system with distilled water as it will not be able to flow through the system (thermostat is closed when engine is cold). Hopefully that answers your questions!

Hi. what's your opinion on the coolant type to use on mk1s? Was thinking of using a G11 after my flush. And we only have the premixed stuff in our stores

I now use G13 because it’s fairly easy to buy, and then my mk4 and mk1 have the same coolant, so less to keep around the house. Obviously the stuff I removed was g11. I’m not sure what VW changed in coolants from g11 to g13, but I know the engine construction is still the same (aluminum head, cast block, rubber hoses). VW specs their g13 to last “lifetime” so I change it every 3-4 years depending on maintenance and all. Nothing lasts lifetime in my opinion. The VW dealership sells g13 by the gallon and I think it was $50. Search online and you can get a gallon g13 concentrate a bit cheaper

@@OlisGarage I used G13 for about 2 years and noticed some of the hoses had swollen and started to "sweat" a little despite not being very old, also i noticed sometimes when i turned on the heater it smelled a little bit like coolant ( it does have a tiny seep ) So i flushed it out and switched it to G11 and so far it's been perfect, i changed the hoses and they are still like new, and it doesn't smell like coolant anymore when i turn the heat on, it lasts less than G13, 2/3 years vs 5, but i'll definitely use G11 from now on. Some of the inhibitors in G13 and other modern OAT coolants seem to cause problems with the rubber hoses and gasket materials used in older engines, G11 also protects copper solder and brass better than the newer stuff.

Hey Man, i love your Videos! I wanna do a flush. I always have some overheating problems (Motor:1.8 2H) specially stuck in traffic… i found thermostats that open at 80* or even 71* do you think, that is an option? Or should I stick to the 87* one?

Sounds like the fan isn’t coming on. I have a video diagnosing and replacing the thermoswitch. Check that one out. Don’t get a lower temp thermostat. It won’t fix your issue. If you’re overheating in traffic but not on highway, then I know your thermostat is opening. The airflow through the radiator just isn’t sufficient in traffic. That is fixed by a properly functioning thermoswitch

@@OlisGarage Wow, That was fast. Thank you! Yes, I changed the thermostat on the Radiator. that fixed the radiator not working properly. Now the temperature light flashes occasionally for like 30sec.-1 min. and stops again. Doesn't mater if I just started driving or if the temp is around 90.

@@felixweindorf4773 oh sweet, then you’re already a step ahead. Don’t pay attention to the light too much… what does the needle on the gauge say? Also if you let it idle for about 10 mins, does the fan come on and then turn off when the gauge is indicating around the middle?

Multiple people have told me that the light sometimes randomly blinks or blinks all the time. I’m not exactly sure how it’s supposed to work or how to fix it. That’s why I usually just pay attention to the needle in the gauge.

@@OlisGarage Yes, fan comes on and the gauge is right in the middle. That blinking light was my "overheating Problem". That realy helps. I was wondering about that blinking light. So I'm going to stick to the gauge. thank you! I would love to see more Mk1 videos. maybe about the shifting reparier kit. that's my next project;-) Your Chanel is by far the best content! thank you again!

Whichever method you use, you should make sure that in the end the system is 50% coolant and 50% distilled water. My method explains how I achieve that proper ratio after a flush without guesswork.

@@OlisGarage I used the Green antifreeze in previous fills, is that not recommended or does it not matter as long as i use the same glycol based concentrate after the flush?

@@juulin2567 don’t mix coolants is the rule of thumb. Some people say the green stuff isn’t for VWs. I honestly don’t know as I never buy the green stuff for my cars. I only use the green stuff in tractors.
