Darrin and CT build Rusty's Engine. This 1962 Volkswagen Type 2 Van/Bus has been sitting for over 40 years. Let's see if we can bring it back to life! www.wolfsburgwest.com vaporhoningtechnologies.com www.eastwood.com / vwdarrin. .
Thanks for watching! This is part (3) of (3) The final episode of Rusty's Engine Build! - Make sure you watch all (3) episodes so you don't miss any of the details. Thank you!
Hey man this video was awesome. I have a question. The full pump rod sleeve on my 1600 broke. Because I triex to take it out wrong didnt realise it was sorta wedged under the distributor. Dumb move. It broke of inside the block. I tried to take it out and it desinigrated and fell inside. Is there anyway to get it out without separating the block. Any suggestion would be extremely appreciated. Signed vw dumby needs help bad.
When I was a kid growing up my father had two VW's. One was a 1500 air cooled engine, and the other was a 1600 dual port air cooled engine. The 1500 was the most reliable of the two, and it would go 140,000 miles before any engine work would be needed. The 1600 dual port was a lemon, and had to have a valve job every 30,000 miles. The 1600 dual port would also suck valves, and throw them through the pistons. We still had the VW with the 1500 engine long after the 1600 dual port was sold. As for the 1500 we had, I still see it running today. Our 1600 is long gone. I remember a friend of ours who was a VW mechanic come over to our house, and work on the 1600 engine. This video brings back memories.
Man that thing sure did sound smooth once Darrin was finished with all the tuning. Anyone who hasn’t ever worked with an old Aircooled engine has no idea how much fine tuning it takes. Darrins skills shine through in all the problem solving. Great job guys!
I can still hear Heinz my VW mechanic telling me to keep those valves adjusted when I was 16...50 years ago! That old ‘58 was turned into a dune buggy. Great video!
After my 62 ragtop was totalled three times, bought back for 50$ each time from insurance company, it became a cut down Baja. That was in '71. Miss that tough old bird.
When I was 16 my father and I rebuilt a 1969. He was not a patient person so mostly I had to just stay out of the way. I really appreciated your patience in these 3 videos. I’m 63 years old now and have thought about getting another VW engine just so I could try again..
Thanks guys for using Zalex's engine test starting tools! Your engine sounds great and I'm so happy for you and Rusty! Troubleshooting that oil leak is exactly why we made this product because the same thing happened to me before. Swapping out parts and getting it to run right is so much more enjoyable out there in the open.
Thank you for making this amazing tool! It was easy to connect and really fun to use. I couldn't wait to flick the switch and push the start button. It was awesome! That is one tool everyone should have if they are working on engines.
I love my1971 VW campmobile all original and I tow it behind my RV.i put a sign on the back window of VW that says " Quite Honking I'M pushing as hard as I can". Be safe fellas.
I overhauled my 61 bug engine in high school, 1969. Ordered big jug kit (1700?) from J.C.Whitney, and manifolds/linkage to add dual carbs. Of course headers with glass pack muffler. Made a world of difference.
This reconnects me to the time when I was at the age of 15-16 and I rebuilt my first 50 HP VW Bus (1973) engine. Long ago. And so present in the same moment. Thank you!
what a great trip through the rebuild, never knew that the valves should be adjusted every oil change or 3000 miles. Real pleasure watching a true craftsman show a novice how to do it right and also some tricks. Thanks for the trip
@@CTmoog Ich hatte ein Karmann Ghia Cabriole....Ventile einstellen? Hatte niemand daran gedacht, auch zu teuer in der Wartung! Das Auto lief dennoch immer....😁
14:32 when I adjust valves, I put the pulley on the TDC mark and pop off the 2 valve covers. On one side (like the one they first adjusted) there will be 3 closed valves (in this example, both for cyl #1 + the intake on cyl #2), so I adjust those. On the other side of the engine, 1 valve will be closed (again, in this example, the exhaust valve for cyl #4 will be closed) so I adjust that as well. I turn the pulley 1 full rotation and adjust the remaining valves. Easy peasy.
We need to buy him some screw drivers this man is someone that brings back history to us older people we all need to support his channel and help him with tools. To keep this history up.an expert at what he does
Thanks brother! It was a great time working with Darrin! Can't wait to hang with him again. That 40HP is sweet! =) Do you have an old dirt bike I can have? =)
My had goes off to this man. The engine through everything at him and to his great credit he kept working despite the extra pressure of being filmed and tamed the beast well done sir
Great! The 40 is a great motor. It's great that you used original dizzy, carb and fuel pump. That's how they were designed. Good to run an oil bath air cleaner and a heat riser. Also good to use thermostat sys. I would loose the fuel filter due to the fact that the stock pump has one built in. Cleaning the fuel screen is done at oil changes. Flush the gas tank and clean the screen in the tank too. You will never regret doing that. Cheers and enjoy!
@@CTmoog Thanks! A '64 bug was my 1st car in 1975. All these years later, i have a '64 sunroof deluxe. All stock and original. Just a driver. Has the same smell and sounds of my youth! Lol
I like you're restoration job of the VW ENGINE because you are doing the job up to the Standard. Not only that I also already followed entire series of causes in Motor Engineering ( PETROL AND DIESEL ) in around 1989 - 1991 at " CEYLON GERMAN TECHNICAL TRAINING INSTITUTE. " KATUBAYDDA. , MORATUWA. , SRI LANKA. So before I joined the Institute l had help a Technician who was Overhauling a VW ENGINE. Finally when I see this job I got that sweet memory in to my Mind. He is Mr. RANDOLF L. GOMAS ( FORMER FOREMAN AT MOTOR GARAGE " SRI LANKA BROADCASTING CORPORATION " ) But at the moment I am sadly remembering him because now he is with our Loving God. Any way I used to call him Uncle Bage.
Firing order was wrong the first time on the big cap distributor, 2 and 4 looked to be flipped on the distributor cap. Very clean build! Can’t wait to see it in the car
Yes, you might be right. I think we got that figured out later in the build. I was distracting him with the filing. Thanks for watching! =) Stay tuned form more!
To use your governor and 28 pict, you'll have to find a bus (211) intake manifold. I would bet that you have a beetle intake on it. Then it will clear your generator better. I always learn something new from Darrin...been missing his videos! This was a great series! Keep them coming!
Hey Jamie! Thank you! It gets me pump up even more when I read comments like this. I can't wait to get back out win the garage on work on Rusty! Stay tuned for more!
@@CTmoog Great!!! It gets me pumped to see your videos! That's what I love about the VW community - For the most part, everyone helps others & encourages others! Have a great day!
Well CT Nice to hear the engine is running, The next project must bring it back again in Rusty the Bus. after the rebuilding of the bodywork Congratulations on your choice from the mechanic. Greetings from HCS.
I helped a good friend of mine rebuild the 1500cc motor on his '65 bus after it dropped the #3 exhaust valve, which was a common thing that happened in VW Buses, and it was such a simple thing to fix too. all that was needed to solve that problem was to do 2 things- put air scoops over the rear louvers to draw in more cooling air, and to put on an after-market oil cooler that had triple the cooling surface and did away with the cooling tower that basically blocked cooling air to #3 cylinder.
loved the show and not to criticize. the First Basic mistake before changing the dizy, was the firing order was in revers. a 2ND fault , was the no1-2 rocker shaft was previously wrongly assembled. Aside for that nice job
I appreciate that you didnt edit out the challenges to get it to fire up consistently. Thats real life. You need to have a certain amount of patience in the tank after you put it all together to be able to do the troubleshooting.
Well, another good stride towards getting ol Rusty on the road. The engine sounds awesome! It was kind of a booger though, but what can you say? Rusty strikes again ! Maybe he'll lighten up one of these days lol. Great job guys!
We used to buy those busses on tour and rebuild the heads and sell them the same 3 day venue. college kids drove them to dead shows and air cooled in a line to get into the venues or hills blew a head gasket. Simple rebuild. Vw's don't do grateful dead tour. They do local venues.
Great CT, you have a great sounding engine, keep up with oil changes and it should run for many years, I would keep it as it is, points and condenser distributor is easy to maintain, check the point gap when changing the oil and have a spare condenser and a set of points in the glove box.
Just discovered this channel and love the engine rebuild videos. I had to do a double take on seeing CT cos I couldn't help noticing there's more than passing resemblance to Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool Footbal Club Manager. Love the channel and have subbed. Keep up the good work "Jurgen" . ATB from sunny Malaysia 😎
I am so glad you got someone that knew that engine to build it. It looks amazing. I am not a mechanic but I am an engineer. i would not have tried that :-)
Engineers also play a part in restoring the engine parts back to its former glory but the fun goes to the mechanic when he builds the motor and gets it to fire it up! The Sweet sound of VW Beetle engine running smoothly like new
Great job guys sometimes rebuilding old Parts take some time to get them working correctly it gets frustrating at times when you just want the engine to start right up but first time, with everything sorted it sounds great
Hello David! Yes, it challenged us a few times along the way. Darrin took it like a champ and didn't give up. He has a few tricks up he sleeve and 40 years of experience! =)
Same initial Start Problems as always: timing and gas. After sooo many engine builds still creeping on the floor. Just like me 😂 Good to see you again after waiting so many month. Keep on going 👍👍👍
Thanks brother! It is a major milestone in Rusty's build! I feel like the engine is the heart. Once the heart is beating the rest will follow! =) Darrin is a life saver!
One thing growing up for me on any engine was the CARBURETOR S man i sure dont miss the rebuilding of those!! Great videos this is a great great video man sounds sweet and AWSOME job to both of you guys!!
Nice to see Rusty's engine come alive with vw Darren's help. Now I hope you will be able to get help to rebuild Rusty's chassis rather than just pulling apart and ordering panels without welding them.
