GTI's have a long, historic, respected pedigree. They command respect everywhere you go. Those that have owned one know. The car is quick, fun, and will satisfy any persnickety perfectionist that demands quality. My first was a MK2 ('Tornado Red'), which was a total blast to drive... and yes, I was often on 3 wheels when performing a sudden turn, the car was so light and planted. The one I drive now is a MK4 2003 GTI VR6, and i've had it for a bit more than 15 years. It's been bulletproof, with no mechanical issues. None. It's a 6-speed manual with a gorgeous, upscale looking leather interior, and red on blue guages, and it still puts a huge smile on my face as my daily driver. I get compliments often.
AudiophileTubes lets see, i had a mk 1 campaign edition 1.8 which was poky, but had high miles and poor brakes. Later we got a mk 2 16v which felt like quite a big step up. The wife had it for about 8 years. No major issues. I totally thrashed it and it took it without complaint. We sold it for decent money, with well over 100k miles on it, to a young guy who promptly crashed . She now drives a mk 5 r32 , which shes had for nearly 10 years. Its had springs and a radiator, battery and tyres in that time. No breakdowns, very little rust. The hing about golfs is that you can drive them hard for years, they are reliable and when you sell them, its easy to do and you get most of your money back. The best all round car on the road, in my opinion.
fast but easy to use, sporty looking but also serious and classy. it's like an iphone: not the best but balanced and it does everything the right way (and i'm not a vw fan)
@@geo5106 The Golf R - when I am at the dealership nothing else is appealing. The Atlas is pretty cool but I'm not an SUV person (unless the badge says AMG Gxx).

Thank you for helping me articulate my argument against people who say Golfs and VWs in general are boring. They're designed so well they fit in everywhere.
@Checkmate I’ve actually blasted past cops in my 7.5 even cut one off on the highway lmao and they didn’t even bother with me, I’d do 50 in my 350z and they be all in my ass. I get what you mean by grandad driving lol
10 years ago, you'd see maybe 15-20 GTIs for every 1 R32 on the road. Nowadays, its completely the other way around with the Rs. Surely it can't just be me that thinks this is downright wrong?
J_W97 Yo must be referring to the new R-line. In Australia at least, The R-line here is everywhere but not as much as the GTi's. R32's are a rare site here.
Not that I see many of them but in Canada the R is only a couple thousand dollars more than a GTi with the performance package and I imagine it's not that different elsewhere in the world
The biggest issue i have with it is that it's not AWD (Winter) otherwise in the history of humanity there has never been a better car to have than the GTI
JAY WRX the mk7 gti is actually faster than the mk6 r The only downside of the gti currently is its launch from 0 while for cornering it does it even better than the r thanks to being lightweight and having the clever front LSD
So have I understood correctly: exhaust is not different to standard gti, which has a "better" exhaust than the r model because they want to sell the akrapovic one on that for 3k?
If they haven't shortened the gearing in the manual version I'm not interested. I'd like to actually be able to creep in traffic without lurching forward.
hllboi817 hopefully in the Mk8 R. I’m in Australia and the market is begging for it provided they don’t take the piss with pricing. It would need to be around the price of an MB A45 AMG or better yet undercut. A DSG Mk7.5 R is around 65k driveaway.
It was speculated but audi would not lend them their 5cyl engines. So we either get to see the usual 4cyl or a 6cyl surprise. The arteon is getting one that's were that rumor comes from. But I don't think that they will ever put a 6 cyl engine in a golf.
Based on VW's common practice...this one might produce around 260 at the crank. I have a Mk6 Golf 1.4 TSI that is supposed to make 160PS...in reality it makes 168.
The US version of the 2018 Golf GTI doesn’t produce any more power than the 2015-2017 models. The sticker says 10HP more than the non-Autobahn versions, but the dyno says no difference.
If it was my, I'd have an .:R32. Yes they're not as fast as an R. BUT you'll have more excitement blasting through tunnels because of that NA V6 engine.
Fabulous cars to drive, exciting and impressive to drive until the plastic brake hoses start to deteriorate, the plastic bladed water pump dissolves and almost cooks your engine or the dsg gearbox starts playing up and the dealership tells you it's going to cost three & a half grand to fix. And these are only a few of the problems i had. 120,000 kays on the clock and its time to go to the recyclers. Don't you just love how biodegradable ohh i mean eco friendly todays European cars are.
Golf R is nice, I've driven it, but in out the door of the dealership money, right now, in the U.S., you are going to pay about $15K more for a Golf R than a GTI. You can get the GTI Sport for about $25-25,000, dealers will move off of the $28K MSRP. They will NOT move off the MSRP of a $40,000 Golf R. So, I'll take the GTI and keep the extra $15,000, but that's me.
Rumblestrip.NET Yeah, well the Golf R is coming from Wolfsburg whilst the GTI is coming from Mexico. On top of that, GTI have been, amongst many other vehicles from many oem, famous for having less power in the American market compared to Europe. In Europe a GTI will cost you at least 32,000 €. just fyi 😊
Maybe best in class for storage and practicality? I've owned several BMW 1-series before, latest gen and the one before that. Ended up with an older GTI MK5 and the boot space was substantially bigger than the 1-series, as well as leg space on the rear bench. The latest 1-series has improved but I think the GTI is still the best in that way. It looks boxy but it is to serve the need of maximising interior space, it seems.
I like how everyone is questioning the reliability of these cars..then listing a half page of modifications to the engine and transmission. Jesus, no wonder these cars don't see 200K that often. What other cars get purchased and almost instantly taken to 120-140% of stock HP and torque and is expected to last 200k with the original maintenance interval? Seriously people, give your head a shake. I feel sorry for all the second owners out there. These cars get beaten within an inch of their lives when new then sold as low KM vehicles by dealers and unscrupulous first owners BTW 2015 GTI Canadian Performance edition, Stage 1+ ECU, Stage 1TCU, Carbon Fibre intake, downpipe. Plus I drive like an idiot. oil change every 10K km or 6K miles. will be sold once it reaches 110K km currently at 40K. I may or may not be upfront about all the hooning this car has experienced.
I would t touch a mini with a 10 foot pole, coming from someone who’s had 5 vws and my sister has a mini lol. All of which my vws have all gone well over 200k miles woth just regular maintenance. My sisters mini and my friends mini always have issues
Dalton v lol you're so right. thats the way the vag builds their cars. they want you to buy a new one every 3years so they can make even more money and become even bigger to build even crappier cars for the same overpriced tags as now.
LOL you guys have no Idea what you're talking about. 2004 Golf mk5 clocking 380 000 km at the moment and still runs like new and never left on the side of the road or had any part fail. If you guys are Americans then I feel sorry for you the American spec VW aren't very good hence their reputation there and I also suspect most Americans maintain their cars.
abd bach I am American. I also live in the rust belt. there are many many Jettas and golfs that seem to be falling apart and they're not that old. maybe they just don't hold up well to our winters. I liked the mk6 GTI I test drove. I just didn't have faith in it lasting. hence why I'm looking to see what the consensus is on modern vw durability
well I own two VWs the Golf mk2 and the mk5 I mentioned earlier and I still have them both but I did change the engine in mk2 (the first one had about 460.000 km). Like I said it may be they way the owners maintain their cars and the fact that you get some weaker parts (like plastic water pump, plastic dual mass flywheel gears....). If you can get your hand on a Euro spec one that'll be great.
abd bach Americans don't really maintain their cars. Either too broke, cheap, or stupid. Our Mexican VWs seem to be much better now than before. I sat in a mk5 Jetta once and it was awful. But I fell in love with the mk7 GTI enough to own one. It's definitely one of the best cars you can get for up to $30k.
nuskox the golf's interior was better. the outside is nice. but I bought my cupra for the engine and turbo (K04) more tuneable. hence with a remap and my bolt ons I'm running over 305hp.
Or any tight corners. Because I'd rather not have the front end plow as it fights for grip because putting the power down and turning is too much for the front end
Its ugly, boring, overpriced and understeers like a german car. And lets not forget the other 345987329 golf TDI R line that look exactly the same as this.......
Talha Ayaan you're a joke. name one audi that doesn't understeer like the piece of crap it is! every fucking audi understeers. a golf too. heck even bmw's understeer. plus they're all overpriced and overengineerd. if you need to change the brake fluid you need to take the whole fucking car apart. bullshit german engineering. unreliable, overhyped, overpriced.
Lets not forget that on modern BMWs if you change the battery you NEED to program the ECU or else it wont even work LOL. The most annoying thing for me thou its the TDIs being the same visually, thats just stupid.
