VW selling the fries and drink to make the extra profit. The badge doesn't get backed up by not having the comp pack as standard. When you by a Focus RS it has the whole package mostly as does a Cupra R or a Trophy R for instance. Stupid concept IMO
Performance pack did get you dcc (not everybody is a fan of dcc) 19 inch pretoria wheels (again why choose pretorias when the 18 inch standard wheel is from clubsport s which is the lightest wheel at VW) semi slicks (wet driving ability will be limited) and deristricted speed limiter for those couple of km... this can be deleted for less money. So to sum it up if you want the engine, better cooling, brakes, lightest wheels and everyday driveability (get some ps4s instead of those cup2s on perf. pack) you would not spec the performance pack and save yourself also weight and money as I do not think its worth those 2+ grand :)
I remember when you 'turned up' at Evo magazine and I thought 'who the hell is this guy'! Years later for what it's worth from my perspective you are now one of the best motoring journalists in the world and as echoed below, you really do deserve some TV time ASAP! Great work as always, keep it up.
GTI forever, i still remember back in the days when the mk V first appeared with the DSG, not even ultra expensive cars had it, even today its optional in some expensive cars just to mention one of its greater achievements, the GTI has been so good for quite a long time that it doesnt surprise anymore but it will always be the hot-hatch reference, to fully understand the new GTI you must know that it wants to be an efficient car to do it all, not just a hard suspension fast hatch
This video stroke a particular nerve with me; insightful review, great photo composition, great setting (things that I take for granted with Carfection but that are crudely missing from other youtube car channels) but what really takes it home for me is the GTI. The GTI has a sweetspot in my heart that the Golf R (or no other car for that matter) can approximate; something about those three letters, the tartan seats, the understatement of it all. I think I now understand what the Swedes mean by Lagom (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagom) and the GTI is the car version of that for me. Is it weird that I want to GTI more than the current sports car I have that costs nearly twice what the GTI does?
You hit the nail on the Golf GTI being "Lagom" in Swedish, which is why I, a Swedish Mk7.5 GTI owner did chose a GTI over it's rivals. A Golf GTI will literally be the only car I'll ever need
Mok Klonge not really, there are many editions from different manufacturers where the engineers are allowed to go crazy or at least do actual modifications . If youre going to name an edition the TCR at least do more than cosmetics
There were pretty healthy discounts available on these when I enquired in March, ultimately after thinking this was the Golf for me, I ordered something else. They’re very, very good but I just didn’t want one enough. Another cracking video by you guys though.
Pretty fair review I thought. Personally I think it’s a lot of money for a 40 bhp bump with some added cosmetics. Having driven a regular mk 7.5 with 245 bhp I would probably just get a remap and save a lot of cash. That way you could have a manual box , plus the diff in that car is spot on brilliant to.
They used to sell the facelifted mk7 GTI in the Philippines, but then they stopped selling them to cater more to the lower class with boring cars like the Santana and Polo sedan. Its unfortunate because the Golf GTI was one of the rare hot hatches in the Philippine market :( At least you can still get one used :)
How mamy version are there of the Mk7 Golf GTI, or even just the Mk7 Golf in general. It feels like there are a million different headlight and taillight designs allready for this golf...
Great little video, as always. You get lots of variations when a big manufacturer is cashing out a model...in this case the face-lifted mark 7. This is especially true when the next model has pre-production teething problems: the mark 8 GTI will appear in 2021 if we are lucky. With the present model, the two natural choices are the 245PS performance pack GTI, with its bomb-proof spec and the Golf R. Why choose anything else?
The TCR looks so fucking beautiful and valuable in my opinion. Just at that pricepoint, there's other cars I'd probably get, like even the Golf R isn't that far off at this point.
@@TheChazas You can't physically fit the 3.0 TFSI on the MQB platform, and the VR6 is getting phased out so don't get your hopes up. Next R will probably use more or less the same 2.0 TSI as now.
Had one in 2016, now an 2018 Audi S3 with 400hp. The GTI was a far nicer car to drive, so much so that I am watching GTI's on You Tube instead of my Audi.
Doesn't justify the extra money over Leon Cupra. Everyone saying the Golf's interior is "far better" than Seat's counterpart, clearly hasn't been in these cars. Yes, I do own a Cupra 290 but when I bought it, I was extensively testing both of these MQB cars. Audi S3 is superior, yes, but Golf and Leon are very evenly matched.
As an older bloke I have to laugh when you say its doesn't have alot of power. My 80's 205's plural would have been horrified by that much power and even my latest Golf Gti with 230 BHP makes my old 911sc look tame. When will it end 😂
The best automotive cinematography on RU-vid and the best motoring journalist. I'd love to see a hot hatch head-to-head with the TCR, Type R and the Megane RS Trophy
4:06 You say no other FWD car has anything quite like it (talking about some sort of e-LSD in this car) but I'm pretty sure the i30N performance pack has an e-LSD that works the same way too. Even in ESC Sport mode, it does allow some tire slip. Of course, the tuning on both would be different. I'd be curious to know how this system compares to the i30N's system.
@@ALMX5DP you had it wrong. There's no mechanical locking diff in the gearbox. There's an open diff. It's a clutch pack OUTSIDE the gearbox, hydraulically and electronically operated by the Menu drive modes.
Does the normal GTI performance also has the diff or is it only on the TCR version? Also @4:06 didn't the i30n also had a very good mechanical diff? EVO and other youtube channels where raving about it when the i30n came out.
I own a Clubsport S and I love it to bits! Really curious to know if they chucked the same suspension bits on this TCR! If the are offering Cup2s its highly likely all one would need is to set it up accordingly.
I think they should have made the TCR actually look a bit more like the Touring car it's meant to be based on. I think these how powered Golfs need more visual drama than just a few cheap stickers.
5:20 Renault did it exactly with the new Megane RS Sport chassis option, but every one gave them shit for it. Make up your mind Henry, do you want a car that is livable as a daily driver or a hardcore no-compromise hot hatch?
It's not because of emissions, it's just to make it the fastest it possibly can be. Because face it, a DSG will shift faster than any human with a manual. The grams of Co2/km literally differs with just a few grams between a manual GTI or R vs DSG GTI or R.
William Gson well that is true but only in straight line speed When it comes to track performance it is always about driver skill I have seen drivers with manual transmission who beat other drivers with the automatic transmission The DSG is one of the best autos in terms of convenience and performance but the manual is the best
Reprise m140i is a lovely car, just too many around so I ordered this. There’s not a wrong choice out of those. Golf doesn’t lose value quite as quickly
That’s a 65 ish grand car in Canada... look... that’s stupid for any hatchback (granted the CAD dollar is crap at the moment) especially when the Honda Civic type -r is 43+ grand. That said great video.
how this car compares to great manual fwd king civic type-r? i ask because don't say a word about honda (they use it ass a daily). For me this one sounds like vag comercial.
You need to keep a POV cam going inset guys..its the only way to get a feel for how she drives. Think about it...your spending all that time trying to express how she drives yet you miss an added way to actually show that and its more entertaining/engrossing..why don't you guys do it?? What, you didnt think of it?? Cant be that too obvious. As said inset it in a corner. Just have it there and leave it. Thanks.
kanervatie The special Addition GTi’s i.e. club sport S are such good handling makes the part time awd drive pointless because most of the time the Gold R is FWD & only uses the rear wheels when needed
I'm sure the golf is great, but ever-impractical me is saying I could buy at LEAST 7 clio 172/182s and have a lot more fun racing my friends aroudn the country side haha!
So 37k for an extra 30-40 horses which really just put it on par with Megane RS, i30N etc? The germans at VW must be smoking smth, given that they have the Golf R.
