in real live it sounds very nasty. cheap, tinny, like it has some loose screws in it. very different to f.e. the more deeply growling ford 1.0l. runs much smoother below 2000rpm though, although with a big turbolag.

Is the gti engine as reliable as normal versions? Which version do you think best, petrol or diesel?

yes if maintained it is reliable, it is used in many vw and Audi models, very easy to modify.
