MG and VW. Not the most natural of bedfellows, are they? VW enjoys a reputation for quality and sophistication, while MG is seen as a purveyor of slightly oddball hatchbacks and SUVs. Until now, that is. For in the revised ZS electric SUV, MG has a worthy rival for the entry-level Volkswagen ID.3.
In this CarGurus UK review, Vicky Parrott explains why that is by exploring how the ZS and ID3 compare for practicality, performance, range, charging, comfort, technology and more. Which would you chose?

Oh what a surprise! As always the German car gets the prize from this lot. I wonder who funds then? I have a ZS trophy and can honestly say I have never heard the suspension make any noises whatsoever and also wind noise is negligible. It handles well for an SUV, goes where you point it and is a pleasure to drive.. oh well!

Seriously, you need to drive the ID3 rather than knock it because you own the MG ? Clearly the MG is designed and built to a price point, thus making it cheaper. Let’s take the drive for example . My comparator is the Golf which is acknowledged as the class leader for drive experience where fossil fuel family cars go, however the drive on the ID3 is on another planet, supported by proper old school rear wheel drive. Even though it possible to do 0-60 in 5.8 seconds I have yet to spin the rears. The road holding is equally good.The version shown is acknowledged as the eco plodder of the range, thankfully no more. My model is Family which has everything the MG has and much much more. Yes at a greater price of course but residuals would be far far higher. Rather than knock the ID, I suggest you actually drive one. It’s an absolutely great car , so much in demand the used car market is nuts. Mint low mileage , circa 10k like mine with 16 months on its back are on forecourt’s for £7-8k more than I paid. It’s been absolutely faultless. Try before knocking perhaps.

This review was interesting. These are my views. Firstly I must state that I have not driven (or even looked at or considered an ID3 although one of my neighbours has one). I looked towards getting an electric vehicle to reduce running costs (currently drive a high performance petrol car and have a 60 mile round trip commute to work), and if you like to experience owning an EV. I know I will incur the cost of actually running another car. I leaned towards the MG's, although made in China, the reviews are generally very good and the prices are cheap by comparison. I intend to keep my current petrol car and use the EV to share the commute and general driving (15K miles per year approx). So I looked at and test drove the MG5 EV estate and the MG ZS EV with my wife accompanying me as critical reviewer... The MG5 which was my initial preferred choice drove nicely and was pretty quick on acceleration (bearing in mind my current car does 0-60 in 4.8 seconds!). It was a very windy and blustery day and surprisingly the MG5 was buffeted a lot and there was more wind noise than I expected when driving on an open and exposed 70mph dual carriageway. After a mixture of fast roads and town driving I was still impressed but slightly disillusioned. Next we took out the MG ZS EV on the same route. I felt the ride was slightly firmer, but the wind noise was much reduced and the buffeting was minimal and very much less than the MG5. To my surprise, we liked the car so much that we ordered one (my wife liked the ZS EV more from the start). I would say that both cars offer a very good and well equipped budget solution which, as I'm keeping my current car, was what I was looking for. So comparing my experience of the ZS EV to this review.... Seats fold flat in the ID3? Well no they don't, they may fold flatter than the MG, but they don't fold flat. There is also still a step in the floor where the rear seats are and still a loading lip (although lower than the MG's). What a horrible A pillar design on the ID3! I really don't like that at all, it's a terrible design that will obstruct views creating blind spots (think cyclists and motorbikes at junctions and mini roundabouts..). The ID3 does look a bit classier up front, but I don't like those screens, it all looks too messy. I think the MG interior looks much better. Looking at the driving shots, it looks like the VW suspension is stiffer, however it all depends what you want from a car. So many cars nowadays are built for performance and aesthetics, bigger wheels with low profile tyres and stiffer suspension for better handling. I know from my current car which has very good performance and handling that even with adaptive dampers the ride can be a real bone shaker on pot-holed town roads. Sometimes one wants a smoother softer ride. The MG is certainly not a performance car, its a good budget vehicle that is well equipped and comfortable. Also the MG has a 7 year, 100,000 miles warranty (think it's 8 years on the battery, but happy to be corrected on this). The ID3 has only a 3 year 60,000 mile warranty - so much for their faith in the so called excellence of German engineering...! It also has 8 years on the battery. Warranties, like any insurances, are only as good as when you need or experience them, but manufacturers like Kia and Hyundai have significantly longer warranties than other manufacturers and its about time these other manufacturers caught up. I'm certainly not expecting the MG ZS EV that I've ordered will set the world alight, what I do expect is a cheap to run, reasonably comfortable, spacious and equipped car that suits my needs and which I don't have to pay over £65 for petrol every 6 days to get to work and back. There are places such as supermarkets or even workplaces where you can charge your EV for a few hours for free. There are no petrol stations that will offer you petrol or diesel for free!

It is absolutely NOT a silly, small or FWP - it is an absolute deal breaker! I still find it utterly ludicrous that VW insists we take such a massive step back in functionality and ease of use by trying to interact with our cars this way. To think I have a 52 year old Morris Minor Pickup in my garage that I can have the heating and (granted, aftermarket!) radio start the moment I turn the ignition, yet I have to wait an age to do anything in this stupid thing! I'm not in the market for an iD, but it was the reason I steered clear of a Golf R (fabulous as that was to drive), and went for an A35 instead.

When she's taking about interiors and says the Vw is classier and generally better I have to disagree. I haven't driven an id3 but I have been in one and the interior on my mk5 golf edition 30 is of much higher quality despite being a now 14 year old car, they've really went down hill! Also those touch buttons are a total pain in the a*se, who thought that was a good idea?! I do like a VW but I'd take the MG every day of the week and that's why I'm potentially looking to get one. It's cheaper, better range, imo a better interior, more space, more kit, pano roof is nice and to top it off a 7 year warranty vs vw's 3 years. Which these days a 3 year warranty is pitiful.

Craig O 0 seconds ago Fake MG, not really MG. China are slowly hollowing out western companies and jobs. They cannot get traction with their own brands so they use western brands against us. This hollowing out will eventually empty out every single sector as they move all industries in house to China. By buying a Chinese car, unlike any other purchase, you are directly supporting a Chinese Communist Party owned company. All car companies in China are directly or indirectly owned by the CCP. You are supporting CCP design, technology, and engineering. China are a self proclaimed enemy of western democracy and free people, that may sound like hyperbole but it is manifestly true. They are a communist/totalitarian regime. Partnership is not a part of their thinking process. It is the cover they use to slowly dismember western economies. They do not want partnership they want control and ownership. This is and will increasingly bleed in to political control and eventually erosion of western freedoms. China simply cannot allow freedom of thought or speech, it is not only antithetical but an existential threat to their regime. They need to extinguish freedom in as many places as possible. It is an innate need for all empires/civilisations to spread their model. We are walking ourselves in to totalitarian control. If you think it seems too far fetched then you need to think deeper and harder. If you think this process will be benign, you are wrong. China will slowly tighten their grip on democracy, it is already starting to happen, they constantly require other nations to limit their speech. On the current course, in the not too distant future, your government will be controlled by China, directly or indirectly, you will not be allowed to change your government, and your government will impose every single decision handed down by China. You will not be able to protest or question these decisions. You and your children will grow up without any freedom for the rest of your/their lives. As one example China forcibly sterilised and aborted their own women in the 80's, dragged them in to horrific surgeries, now the Uyghurs are being subjected to the same treatment.

The MG is charging up to 94 kw, not 75kw. 75kw is for the 50kwh model. And it actually staying stabel at over 90 kw until around 50-60% so it seems it can take more but they have decided to throttled it for stability. Their aim seems to be 0-80% in 40 min. On any of their cars.

I don't understand how the ID.3 came out on top. Badge snobbery?. I am going to be interested to see reviewers do a comparison between the ID.3 and the Renault Megane E-Tech when it hits these shores. From everything I have seen of the E-Tech, it won't even be a close call and anyone who puts the VW top amongst the two will clearly have been paid by VW.
@steveholliday1599
@steveholliday1599 2 года назад
Looked at both in detail. ID.3 looks nicer from outside (IMO) and it drives/handles much better. Other than those two points though, I thought the MG was better in every other way. So did my wife and two 'kids' (18 and 21). Internals of iD.3 were a big disappointment. Buttons were awful. Lots of 'features' missing (like seat adjustments etc). Anyway we decided to go for the new Trophy LR for which we paid £28K, including an additional built-in dash-cam and paint-prep (although car has yet to arrive). But then, iD.3 was out at 12 months at the same point and is now out at 18 to 24 months.
@lokiodinson4804
@lokiodinson4804 2 года назад
Thanks for sharing. I agree the MG seems much better value for what you get at the price. One question tho, mg website states trophy Lr is 33k approx? How or where did you manage to get 28k If you don’t mind me asking? That price would make it qualify for gov grant whereas the offfical price is above threshold and thus does not qualify (unless you step down to the trophy without long range). Thanks.

@@lokiodinson4804 I ordered just before the government grant limit reduced, plus a bit of negotiation (discount, spare wheel, dashcam installed, V2L adaptor), plus finance (which we will pay off directly) contribution of £1,500 at the time. The MG have put up the price of the car a bit. Still haven't got the darned thing yet though. But - when we do, I think it will have about £5K instant upside due to all of the above and fact there's no stock anywhere. Actually we might sell it on delivery, as we don't strictly need it (I have extended a lease on my Tesla M3P).

There's a long lead time on VW, and adding to that is the fact that EV technology is 'motoring' ahead at speed, and by the time a VW EV actually arrives on your driveway, the tech will be way more outdated than last year's smart phone.

@nigel.w
@nigel.w 2 года назад
@@CJMVector321190 Short answer: I agree. Long answer, if you've got nothing better to do, as I clearly didn't when I wrote it: Don't get me started. I agree. For me, the engine is the heart of the car. For the most part a special car has a special engine. Of course, the likes of the Fast Fords make something special out of the ordinary, somehow managing to make cars greater than the sum of their parts. And there are the design icons like the E-Type, which we forget actually does have a 6cyl engine that was pretty special back in the day, and latterly of course the V12. Thankfully, few icons have a crappy engine, like the DeLorean. And values generally reflect rarity, although Covid seems to a have brought with it many thinking disorders, including paying over the top for almost everything, and it seems to be continuing with no end in sight. Anyway, as for EVs, the tech is very immature, and it's mainly about the battery tech rather than the motors, which can already deliver more power than the human body was designed to withstand. But, like in the early days of cellphones, it's the battery tech that needs to mature. We're at the equivalent of the brick phone stage where the batteries are big and heavy, take ages to charge and have short standby/talk times. Well, almost -- although the charge times have reduced significantly, and 'talk' times are now perfectly usable by most people, not just the early adopters, etc, etc, etc. ICE cars have long been overly digital, with the infotainment systems dating them and encouraging you to buy a new car more than anything else. For the most part you buy a perfectly good car with a computer that was out of date before you bought it. And when the computer becomes really outdated, you get rid of the car, and start the whole sorry process again. Even otherwise great cars are plagued by centre consoles with outdated infotainment and navigation systems that majorly detract from the emotional experience. But it's also fair to say that most regular ICE cars don't have characterful engines worth writing home about. And I have no problems with such engines being replaced by electric motors and fuel cells. There are real problems with ICE engine emissions in some city centres, caused by rush 'hour' traffic, which EVs can help resolve. BUT, there are also technologies, like stop-start and petrol particulate filters that haven't been allowed to make an impact before this rush to ditch ICE in favour of EVs and demonize ICE. Of course, it's not logical. It's all political. You could say, it's nonsense. But that nonsense is largely controlling destinies, unless something dramatically changes. like actually following real science, rather than fake science and the science of psyops. It's already an open secret that EVs don't actually save the planet, if indeed it needs saving, and that the likes of Ferraris, driven an average of somewhere between a few hundred and a few thousand miles a year aren't as polluting as the average human being, which is why there are now studies that encourage not breeding to save the planet, which is the true agenda...not saving the planet, but culling the human population by way of a multi-pronged attack and destroy strategy to achieve an elitist agenda. Anyway, EVs redistribute emissions, rather than reduce them. In fact, the manufacturing process creates massive emissions up front, which combines with dirty sources of electricity to destroy the EV myth, as, according to leading manufacturers like VW and Volvo, it takes up to 90,000 miles before an EV breaks even with an ICE car. And then there's the failure to appreciate that EVs aren't made with renewable raw materials. And also what we see playing out in the Russo-Ukrainian War; that countries that have refused to exploit their own energy deposits are at the mercy of those that do. And that if you don't expolit your own, but have no less requirement and instead import from somewhere else, you're not saving the planet, just redistributing the problem, and actually making it worse, by having less efficient, less regulated producers extract and refine, and then there's also the increased length of the supply lines, the environmental problems cause by pipelines, and of course container ships, which along with aeroplanes and trains actually constitute the vast majority of transport sector emissions, not cars, and not even the big diesel trucks. I said, don't get me started! Anyway, if you got here, the answer to what are we getting with EVs, with particular reference to powertrains, is the equivalent to shopping for vacuum cleaners...with possibly even less ability to stir the emotions. Of course, not all ICE engines stir the soul or bring about positive emotions, and I have no problem with consumers being given the choice of new technologies. The biggest problem is the fake agenda, the fake science, and the unnecessary, illogical, and self-harming demonization of ICE. And the problem stems from the removal of the distinction between environmentalism and climate alarmism. All we need is to promote environmental consciousness. There's no need for any science, least of all fake science. Most people want to live where it's clean and green. Most people don't, and those that do, see how it is as soon as they venture beyond their leafy suburbs. You don't need to create a false narrative. And you don't need to force people to adopt something new. If it is indeed better, the consumer will buy it without any coersion whatosever. And what do we get as a result of similar Government interventions? We have a national and European fleet of largely diesel vehicles, which Governments said were saintly to own. Now, they're not saintly anymore. Diesel is the devil's fuel, and anyone who owns a diesel is in league with the devil. As you can gather, my emotions are stirred, but not in any positive sense. And aural pleasures have largely been eradicated from new cars as a result of regulations. And the least of them is noise regulations, because they don't dictate the nature of the noise, only it's maximum volume, which if reasonable is actually no problem whatsoever. What are the aural pleasures of an EV? None? Not exactly. There's something to be said for the sound of silence. But they're not totally silent. Some motors whine more than others, but it's the road noise you end up hearing most, unless you have a sound generator turned on, piping in the sound of the Jetsons or Star Wars or similar, which soon gets old and annoying, just like the drone of an aftermarket exhaust on a boyracers ICE car. But car makers realise the great importance of the aural component, and are desperate to create synthetic sounds that will stir positive emotions. In fact, the very word, emotions, is increasingly found in automotive literature and advertisements! Anyway, is it possible to create synthetic sounds that will stir positive emotions? Anything is possible. But there are tastes that are largely universal, ie, shared by the majority, irrespective of gender, age, culture, etc, such as the love of a great internal combustion engine going through a tuned exhaust system, and the crescendo as the revs approach the red line. And then there are niche tastes, like the tastes for various musical genres. What I know is that it took decades to make a digital piano sound, feel and respond like the real thing. And some would say that it's still not been achieved and never will be. Yet, in that context, there are good reasons to try. Real pianos are big, heavy, costly, go out of tune, are affected by the weather, and you can't plug headphones into them, so they disturb others. Nonetheless, there's no substitute for the real thing. The challenge of EV makers is to generate new sounds that are universally appealing, not recreate the sounds of ICE by decades of digital sampling that would rival the sampling required to make a digital guitar. Nothing is impossible, but this has to be well up there with the least likely to happen. The world could lose something that has in fact been more postive in the history of humankind than most appreciate! It will be a sad day if all you can do is listen to an imperfect recording, with the impossibility of hearing it for oneself as a driver or passenger. And it would be without any good reason whatsoever! EVs are certainly not the answer. They are part of a mix, and should succeed or fail purely on market forces, not on the basis of Governmentmental force and nefarious agendas. Now, don't get me started on the price of new cars, EVs in particular, and the apparent turning of backs on ordinary consumers and volume profits in favour of high per unit profits from products aimed at the wealthy.

Some interesting comments. We looked at various MG, Hyundai and Kia models as well as the Life spec ID.3before settling on a low mileage 2 year old ID.3 1st Edition Plus. For us it's about comfort for back seat occupants as well as the front seat occupant and driver, ease of use, a good dealer network, reasonable equipment and a real world 200 mile range. Our 11,800 mile 2 year, 3 month old ID 3 Plus (which had been p/x'ed at a BMW dealer) had one fault which is being remedied on warranty but otherwise meets our every expectation, and then some. It is very smooth and quiet on the road, returning 3.8 to 4 miles per kWh, is comfortable enough for elderly relatives to sleep comfortably in the back (yes, there is a centre armrest on higher spec models) and cost us less to buy than any of the MG, Kia or Hyundai models would new. Another consideration is the incredibly poor customer service we received from Hyundai and MG dealers. They just don't seem to care in our experience. I am not worried about warranties as the traction battery has a long warranty and we have 15 months warranty on the car (remains of VAG 3 year ID.3 warranty (separate to the fraction battery) plus 6 months extended from the dealer where we found the car). The car suits us. We are very happy with it. Nothing more to be said really except that the software hasn't been at all glitchy, the interior is nowhere near as naff as people suggest and those unlit sliders really are not the problem reviewers have made them out to be. And, you can adjust audio volume with a swipe of the right thumb across the steering wheel buttons which is remarkably simple. My only observation is that we cannot find how to turn the radio off, only mute it. Must read the manual ... 🤔 🤣

In May 2021 I purchased an MG HS through Motability. Unfortunately due to Covid I was unable to test drive the car and having only driven diesel cars I was bitterly disappointed in the petrol engine. Not only that, the infotainment is horrendous. Sometimes it works, mostly it doesn’t. There are times the whole system crashes and the screen goes blank meaning you can’t change the heating or stereo. On the plus side, the MG looks great both on the inside and outside. The leather seats are super comfy and the panoramic roof is excellent. Looking at the ZS in this video the interior is very similar to the HS. I decided to switch to an EV and chose the VW ID.3. I’ve taken it out on a couple of test drives and love it. I ordered the Family Pro Performance - which incidentally has a panoramic roof, a rear arm rest and a split floor in the boot - all things Vicky made complaints about her ID.3 not having!! The down side is that since ordering the ID.3 in July 2021 I’m still waiting for it to arrive!! Everyone has an opinion on the cars they like and that’s what makes us unique as people. Had I not lived with an MG for the past 15 months I may have chosen the ZS as it really does have a lot of kit included as standard. It all comes down to personal preference.

The software is still buggy, laggy and dangerous as there are multiple accounts of owners having the entire screen blank out and refuse to turn back on whilst the owner is driving. This is just one small example of the many many software issues still plaguing VW EVs. The ergonomics of the VW are lacking and just puzzling, the charging speed could be quicker and Vicky forgot to also mention that the OTA updates are not true updates as they only update the infotainment and not the entire car unlike Tesla. If this were a school report then VW would get a D. MG did a pretty good job with the ZS EV but also need to make improvements as mentioned.

Don't agree that they are very similar. Test drove both and the iD3 has a very cheap feeling inside and out. VW has gone mega budget on there car to maximise profits. @nigel.w
@nigel.w 2 года назад
I think the Chinese have no supply issues and MG is making its profits the traditional way, iie, by selling in volume. There's a long lead time on VW, and adding to that is the fact that EV technology is 'motoring' ahead at speed, and by the time a VW EV actually arrives on your driveway, the tech will be way more outdated than last year's smart phone. To me, it makes sense to dip one's toe into the EV world as cheaply as possible until the technology matures significantly more, or buy a Tesla for its network. And I must say that the Tesla Model 3 is almost a bargain compared to most of the new EV offerings, which by the time you add options, can easily be more expensive, and that's also where most of these reviews fall down, over like for like. By the time you spec the cars up with the likes of radar cruise, etc, you're spending in a different league altogether. The MG is fully spec'd at 33-34k, depending on deals (albeit slim), whereas by the time you spec up most of the similar offerings, you''re not at all close. That 10% difference the reviews/reviewers talk about is easily 30% by the time you spec it how you would actually want it. No matter how I spec a Skoda Enyaq, for instance, which is the darling of the car reviewers, I end up well past 40K, even past 45k.

MG all the way. The ID3 looks really cheap inside. I have no idea why people insist on VW cars, I think they're very boring and expensive. MG ZS is a far better car and cheaper.

I've owned a few MGs - MGA, MGB, Midget. This MG looks more like it came out of the imagination of a 1970s designer who might have given us the Allegro or Chevette. It is, without a doubt, one of the ugliest cars to ever wear the MG badge - that includes the Metro.

VW are a terrible company for EV customers. I've been looking at all their cars.. ID3, Cupra Born, Skoda Enyaq and all of them profess to be in the £35,000 range, but their base models have software and tech stripped out so you have to pay to get it the way you would want for a car this price. Once you add in the 'tech packs' and options you're in the £40,000 range and above and then you're into the Kia EV6 and Ionic 5 area and those cars are WAAAAAYYYY better than these. The Cupra Born has the cheek to charge you £300 more for the blue paint job featured in all their marketing than the normal options which are already £500!! Just milking the customer for all their worth. Disgraceful really. Then you have the MG ZS EV and they don't mess about, two battery options, 4 trims (2 short range, 2 long range) loaded with tech and features you'd have to pay £40,000+ to get and the top trim is sub £35,000. I notice she didn't mention the MG's Vehicle to Load ability or its towing ability etc. how about that for practicality? The panaramic retractable glass roof, you can't get that on anything under the 40k mark. Sure it's ride might not be the best, but it's certainly not bad either. MG is top of my list for an EV this year, just waiting to see if Kia's new Niro EV is decently priced, if not it will more than likely be the MG imo.

Vw is actually nice to drive but that infotainment system is awful, the tiny drivers display is pretty useless. The touch system is horrible, what's wrong with knobs and dials. Plus there is no 12v supply in the passenger cabin

Totally agree. We have had loads of EVs over the years, but 6 months ago went out to buy a 'cheap' EV for my eldest son. We bought the MG ZS LR (having looked at Zoe, Id.3, Mini, e2008, Mocka-E, and a bunchg of other cars) but it was amazing how quickly you start to conclude that a Tesla Model 3 SR+ is a really great value EV and I couldn't believe how close we got to getting another one (we already have a Tesla Model 3 Performance and a BMW i3). I suspect if I took current depreciation of the MG ZS vs Tesla Model 3 into account, that financially the Model 3 probably would have made more sense, *and* we would have have had the Model 3 by now, whereas we are still waiting for the ZS!
