VW Jetta GLI Reliability and Maintenance Owner Review: 23K Miles Later

In this long term owner review of the 2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Autobahn Trim with the the 7 speed dual clutch DSG transmission, we review what its like to maintain and fuel the GLI during our first 23,000 miles of ownership.
How reliable has it it been? Have there been any issues? How is the fuel economy?
One thing to note is that if plan to change your own oil in this GLI you have to use the 508/509 spec engine oil which is not easy to find.
For convenience, you can use the below links to order Motul or Liqui Moly brand 0w20 508/509. These German manufacturers make top notch oil specifically engineered for turbocharged European vehicles.

Have a 2004 Jetta GLI 1.8T with over 455,000 miles on it and have never had a problem with it. Still has the original turbo and the only work on the engine has been timing belts every 70,000 miles. It's a stick so I've been through three clutches but never needed work on the trans yet. Still, gets 26 to 28 mpg and can easily get up over 100 mph when needed.

Direct injected means carbon from imperfect combustion and intake valve operation, carbon deposits can pile up overtime. Detergents in premium fuel may leak into the intake valves. But that is unlikely and only wishful thinking. Carbon deposits gets sticky when temperature goes up and intake valve may not operate so smooth.

Thanks for watching! The accord is excellent and you can’t go wrong with that choice from a reliability, fuel economy, and comfort perspective. It is a very big car though. The GLI is a completely different animal but does offer lots of room, great fuel economy, but is a hoot to drive and a little rougher around the edges. I do have a video on the K5, one of my favorites, and a comparison of the K5 to the Accord. Have a full Accord review planned in the schedule.

Thanks so much for your hard work! Would love to see you guys go further with more of these. I know it’ll be difficult to put mileage on multiple cars/brands… but definitely useful!!! I currently am acquiring 2023 Tiguan and Jetta, and this gave me great insight into the Jetta. I’ve been a VW fan for years and somehow feel I may be leaving the brand as there hasn’t really been much growth and yet the costs are climbing. The wiper issue mentioned was also on my 2019 Atlas along with a drop in oil when driving long distances 🤷🏽‍♂️ dealership couldn’t figure it out and always asked me to just fill it and bring it back to them 😅 but with the new cars, we’ll be trying it out again for the last time and after looking at other vehicles.
@BeyondTheTestDrive
@BeyondTheTestDrive Год назад
Thanks for watching and the kind words. We really like the Tiguan and VW has continually improved the Jetta with that new 1.5. It has terrific fuel mileage. It’s my understanding that the Jetta has proven to be fairly reliable since it’s 2019 introduction. We would love to long term as many cars as we can, but all new cars should be fairly reliable in the first couple of years. Our next long termer may be a used car with 30-40k mikes so we can run it up into the 70s to see how it’s holding up. That’s when issues usually arise and warranties expire. Keep in touch regarding your new Tiguan and Jetta. All the best and happy motoring.

The term RELIABILITY has been completely deformed. Reliable means, THE CAR STARTS, RUNS AND DOESN'T LEAVE YOU STRANDED. Also, not having constant break downs even after a fix. If an infotainment system doesn't properly connect to your phone, that has nothing to do with reliability. It's another tactic by the media to skew people's opinions and views about something.
@BeyondTheTestDrive
@BeyondTheTestDrive Месяц назад
Thanks for weighing in. I agree the term reliability has been expanded to cover many things. Since we are not the media that is not our intent nor is it a conspiracy. Cars should be 100% expected to not break down and leave you stranded at today prices and technological advances. There is reliability, dependability, durability and quality. Since most cars are dependable enough to get you where you want to go reliability has now shifted to mean fulfilling all of its functions whether electronics, comfort, safety, etc. and is also indicative of unscheduled repair service. Initial quality sometimes can be softly correlated with longer term reliability and repair costs. Thanks again for weighing in and happy motoring.

I have a 2019 GLI with 78K on it now. I have had no reliability issues so far but i am dealing with an issue right now that i hope is finally resolved as of yesterday. The plastic oil pan was replaced due to a crack from an object in the road. The drain plug kept leaking after two or three tries. Turns out they were putting a 3rd party plug in it and it just would not stop dripping. It had an original VW drain plug put in yesterday and so far it’s dry but i will wait a week or so before i try to clean the oil off the driveway just to be sure. I have the manual. Think it’s a great car to drive.

Averaging over 38 mpg in mine(1.4 6spd manual). No rough idle. Actually it's extremely smooth. Only one problem, the EPA-mandated purge valve, which is of zero need in a vehicle. Was replaced under warranty early on and not a problem since. Don't know how the EPA estimated only 41 mpg highway, as it gets 45 easily if not 46-47. On one back road ride at an easy pace it resulted in over 51 mpg for 100 miles. Handles great like a VW should. Really zero problems in 45,000 miles and 3.5 years of ownership here.

I have 28,000 miles on my 2019 GLI Anniversary Edition. The 6-speed manual transmission is the smoothest I've had.....and I've had a few BMW's and a Porsche. Everything has gone well, until I just came home from a week's vacation. My car had not been driven for a week. I pushed on the clutch to start the car, and it went to the floor and stayed there! Now I'm a 75 year old man who drives like a little old lady. I think my turbo has only chimed in a couple of times since I've had the car. This is not the driver's fault. Apparently, the hydraulic fluids leaked out somehow. Anyway, two weeks without a car is not fun. No other issues with the car.

For rattles at highway speeds, one thing you need to do is check your tires. I have 106,000-km on my 2019 Jetta, and the tires are showing 'cupping' on their inboard edges. I thought it could be a wheel bearing, but the cupping explains it. The noise went away when I put my winter tires on which have no cupping. The only repair I needed was recently a solenoid failed that switches an oil circuit that I believe regulates the variable valves in the head. Either that or it switches open the oil cooler circuit. I've done all my maintenance so far and I'm very pleased with my Jetta.

Not great , since I had them rotated at each 5,000 mi oil change . Brakes are noisy and front rotors are warped . I do drive a bit fast and hard so I’m not shocked . My experience with the parking brake is that the brake pads are semi-metallic and are literally rusting in place (lightly) and seizing to the rotor in high humidity and when applied for 24 hrs. or more. Thus the snap or pop noise is when you brake the rotor free of the rusted pad it is contacting.
@BeyondTheTestDrive
@BeyondTheTestDrive 2 года назад
Definitely and I have seen online where some pads have cracked. Not totally sure but the VW tech indicated the sensor helps control the clamping force. Would defiantly advise all owners to not use the parking brake unless necessary when on an incline or such, especially for extended periods.

On a side note, after selling it I went out and bought a 2014 A5 2.0 flex fuel (aluminum intake manifold) with 120k miles. Now a lot of the maintenance has been done to it (water pump, spark plugs, regular oil changes, pcv replaced etc..) so it’s in good shape. Oh wow. That is some great choices. That Camry will without a doubt be bulletproof and stress free. That WRX will be the wild child and a tons of fun. It will chew on some gas too. If you want to mod then the GLI is a great blank slate and you can easily get it to the subies numbers without too much of a gas hit.
@medievalman86
@medievalman86 2 года назад
@@BeyondTheTestDrive the perceived disadvantage of the wrx is, 91 octane is required. Not just recommended. My understanding is the Camry and GLI are cool with regular 87. That being said, (how accurate it is, idk) folk say the overall maintenance cost on a Subaru is likely a good bit less than a GLI.. (or VW overall). SO I wonder, with the money i might save on maintenance with the wrx, does that make up for the lost MPG/higher gas cost.. My real problem with the Camry, I guess is not really anything against the camry- its that all the dealerships in my area just smack an additional 6-8grand above the MSRP as a "covid adjusted price"... where as VW and Suburu dealerships were a hard "pass" on doing that.. Aesthetically, I would be happy with all 3, but if forced - the GLI/Camry > WRX. Also, another + to the WRX atleast is that they do honor website builds... Toyota/VW will not honor website builds. I also suffer with analysis paralysis. Fortunately, I am 3 months away really from purchasing.. been waiting 2 years to buy a new car so not really gonna wait to 2023 models unless i absolutely have to..
@BeyondTheTestDrive
@BeyondTheTestDrive 2 года назад
@@medievalman86 Toyota’s are really hard to buy right now so I would rule out the Camry based on that craziness. But in 3 months it could change but not likely. Just throwing this out there, but have you considered a Mazda 3 turbo? It has AWD and can also take regular. Even the non-turbo is really good. Also, the new Honda Civic is really good and you can get it in a manual. It has Camry like interior room. If you need an automatic, then the CVT will sap the fun.

LOL they said it was the dealer plate vibrating in the back windshield on the test drive. Mine got fixed really easily though. I thought something was really off. I get the wiper drags, too just like yours. I don't think the rain sensing wipers are very good either... they either go a million miles an hour or not nearly enough. I get the rough idle here and there... mainly when it's really hot and humid out. I thought maybe it had something to do with the a/c spooling up at full blast on startup. Mine will work itself out right away. I find high humidity zaps the performance pretty good in general. Right now the turbo definitely has more lag than say an October day. My only other nitpick is that the red paint seems kind of soft. I've picked up some chips and I don't even drive a ton. OH yeah... the rims show scrapes really easily... even with the slightest touch against a curb... beware. I got a check engine light on in mine once because the engine went through a sequence where it was too cold. That was bizarre. The dealer cleared everything and gave it a clean bill of health so IDK what that was about. Also, I've hit 40 mpg in mine... and that's still moving at a pretty clip. All in all I really love this car and have way too much fun in it. I'm planning to keep it for at least 6 years while under warranty.

I’ve found with my GLI, I’ve gotten slightly better mpg and obviously better performance with premium gas compared to 87, especially in hot weather. Thanks Gabriel for the question. I think the longer you own the car the more your ears get in tune and hear more and more of the subtle noises, and once you hear one you will always notice it. Hi Cameron. I can understand your concerns. I try to be as balanced as I can in sharing our experiences. Our car is a sample of one and people on the internet seem to post complaints more than praises. But we have owned two VWs now and both were more problematic out of the gate than our history with many Toyota and Hondas. But they set the bar quite higher. If you have not seen them yet check out all of our videos on the GLI for an overall perspective. We did just recently trade the GLI (another video is now up on that) but it was not due solely to the issues, although annoying, seen in this vid. Reliability and quality have to be weighed equally with performance and features when making the decision. VW is a corporate mega empire and the North American market is only a sliver of their global sales. I have seen nothing from them to indicate they really want to increase market share except to offer bigger and bigger SUV’s. And the electric car buying crowd is quite skeptical of VW as a brand as the new ID4 is not exactly jumping off the lot.

Likewise. We did sell our GLI with a little over 20 thousand miles but it needed an alignment and four new tires. Apparently the factory alignment is not that great and GLI’s wearing out their tires early is common. The good thing is you can update to some better tires. Thanks for commenting.

spark plugs 60K?
@BeyondTheTestDrive
@BeyondTheTestDrive Год назад
Thanks for the question or comment. Does that seem too frequent or not often enough? 60 K mikes is the VW recommended change interval. Frequency probably related to the turbo and direct injection.

Do not do oil changes at 10k or even 5k. I do mine at 3k. And I've always used Castrol 5/30 synthetic from Walmart since 2k. It is approved like vw I truly belive why mine made it to 187k. Wo issues. I do fuel filter every 25k it's 25 bucks and 10min job.. And I do spark plugs 15-20k. It's 60 bucks.. You said u have rough idle. Sounds like carbon deposit. Why I do oil changes at 3k it helps with carbon and do some highway runs helps keeps intake chambers clean.. Always 93 even though it says 87. Always 93

Thanks for watching and the great feedback on your VW. Some great tips. We plan to halve all the services intervals so plugs at 30k. In 2019 VW went to the new 508/509 spec 0w20 but it was probably for fuel economy. It is dyed green so not sure if that is a tale tell for any dealer warranty work. I do know frequent oil changes will help with carbon and I think the third gen ea888 has a little lower build up problem. Congrats on getting yours to such high mileage. Keeping up with maintenance and fixing the little things quickly is the key. Thanks again.

@@BeyondTheTestDrive no problem mantaince is key, good gas and lots of short trips really bad for the carbon. I'm also stage 1 since 8k miles.. I have gen 3 engine. Only diff between your gen 3 engine and mine is a diff turbo and variable valve timing. Otherwise it's all the same.. yes gen3 less carbon because the pcv valve was changed in 2014, causing less carbon build up then the gen1 engine.. And yes they switched to 0/20w strictly for fuel economy less friction but maybe more wear.. I run my car really hard. But let it warm up to 180f oil first and let it cool down before parking.. Worst think for these cars if you putz around they need there legs stretched to keep engine clean, and BTW Walmart oil Castrol 0/20 will just be fine don't let people tell you otherwise.. Been driving vdubs since 1992. It's my 16th vw all have made it 200-400k wo any problem.. Timing chain stretch can be a problem around 300k mile mark or 150k miles if person changes oil every 5-10k.

@@hotshotfx3502 more awesome info. The warm up and cool down is key I think. And what type of stage one tune do you recommend? If I can keep this channel growing would love to feature a long term and loyal vdub owner.

@@BeyondTheTestDrive apr stage 1.. feels same as stock but takes boost from 9-11 psi to 19 psi.. engine are good for 23-24 psi. So apr is really safe.. Feels awesome and when I'm not on it mpg went up 1 mpg. When I'm on it she will still get 24-26mpg. Cruising on highway will get 33mpg

It depends on what year. The Walmart castrol oil is not 508/509 oil. There is only one castrol that is. As far as I have seen, walmart does not carry it.

I drive a 2002 mark 4 Jetta, with 225k miles. Same engine, transmission (manual) and clutch. That oil requirement is BS, you can use whatever you want. That maintenance schedule is a joke, cut it in half or by a third. Please don't wait until 80k to change your transmission fluid, Jesus Christ. 20-30k. Volkswagen told me it was a "lifetime fill" even though there's a drain and fill plug right on the transmission, and refused to change it. Its all about marketing and planned obsolescence. Volkswagen are still using direct injection motors? They will never learn.
@BeyondTheTestDrive
@BeyondTheTestDrive 2 года назад
Thanks for watching. Yea, I think I mention in the video we halve the oil change interval and will do the transmission at 30-40k. For the new 7 speed DSG VW went to 80k versus 40 but no one should wait that long. VW still hasn’t added port injection to the DI, like Toyota and others have done, so eventually carbon deposits will need to be dealt with. But this third gen EA888 is supposedly a little better on the carbon.

Yeah the car doesn’t really live up to its name. Poor quality issues, especially since the dealer didn’t do anything about the supposed brake line noise. So no way am I going to buy one.

It’s about understanding the combination of performance, purchase price, fuel efficiency and reliability. Taking those all together the GLI and GTI siblings are hard to beat if driving fun is important. But…..and it’s a big but. VW needs to demonstrate continuous improvement regarding quality control and with respect to this fuel line rattle it’s been a know problem for quite awhile and they have chosen to do nothing about it during assembly. All the best and thanks for commenting.
