Car was overheating even after replacing thermostat and waterpump.
Follow along as I stumble through fixing this passat.

Please forgive the shaky video, I'm still figuring the video process, and promise to do better in the future.

Good logical steps and repair! The more money customers spend, the less appreciative they are in general. Those who understand that you saved their vehicle from a catastrophic failure, will gladly pay the "smaller" bill and not leave with a sarcastic comment "Hope I don't see you again too soon!"... like it's our fault that they had to spend big bucks. Look after your car and you'll just pay regular maintenance fees. =)

Hello my friend, please help me. I'm from Mexico and I own a 2006 passat, I saw your video and the technician reviewed the radiator and he said me that its fine (working at 85%). I replaced the thermostat (mahle brand), water pump, coolant temp sensor (autozone brand), harness sensor, coolant reservoir and still is overheating. Running the engine in parking reach 90°C after some minutes start the fan in low rpm and later stop and so on. So driving the car in city, in 30 or 40 minutes later the engine shutdown for high temp. The gauge stay at 90° but the engine is hot. I have to wait untill temp down to start the engine again. Do you think should I have to replace the thermostat again? Or replace the radiator? I will appreciate your help and comments about it. Thank you. Best regards.

overheating is leak, thermostat, waterpump, head gasket or clogged radiator. Its difficult to tell the difference between a thermostat that doesn't open, a radiator that is clogged., or a waterpump that isn't pumping. I cant be much help without checking the car. Can you drive it here from Mexico without it overheating? :)

@@CoolAirVw I think is not possible to drive where you are 😄 Last thing to do is to put a new radiator, probably needs the 100% of water flow to cool and I will pray. If it doesnt work, I will review the head gasket. Thank you for your response. Have a great day. Greetings from Mexico.

@@CoolAirVw Hello my friend. I discovered the issue on my passat. It was the new thermostat. It opened but not enough to allow the flow of coolant while driving. I buyed and installed the original equipment thermostat (vw, audi, seat) and the overheating was eliminated. Clearly original equipment are expensive but so much better quality. I hope this experience helps to another DIY readers. Thank you and have a great day. 👍

My VW.PASSAT 1.8T.is running extra hot but I discovered my clutch fan was not blowing hard enough. So B4 that my thermostat housing was cracked an I repaired that but then it started running super hot an istop driving it but could that cause the water pump to leak or go out...so my mechanic looked at it an noticed the fan clutch blowing weak.so should I still get a water pump an timing belt.? Or see how the fan clutch work but I notice s leak toward the front of the car towards the right .please reply .Watsgud132@gmail.com

I have a 2003 Volkswagen Passat 1.8 Turbo doing the same thing I installed a timing belt water pump thermostat does not overheat while idling but does overheat after about six to eight mile from your video I tested the radiator upper is at 190-200 the lower of the radiator is only at 76 hopefully a radiator will fix mine

certainly seems that way. You always have to worry about the head gasket though.

Question: I have an 01' Passat that keeps overheating. Replaced the water pump and thermostat and still over heats. I have noticed that extreme pressue (up to 19 psi) keeps building up in the coolant system. I have to keep opening the cap on the coolant tank to release the pressure. While the car is running and hot, with the cap off, I hear air pressure constantly coming from the coolant tank and it is always girgling. I am thinking head gasket so I removed the spark plugs while pressure testing the coolant system but It doesn't bleed down at any crazy rate so i'm a little stumpted now. Any ideas?

I’m having that problem with my 2002 Passat I changed the thermostat and all it’s still running hot like it’s barely getting a flow
@CoolAirVw
@CoolAirVw 4 года назад
waterpump could be busted or the small hose on the reservoir could be clogged.
@jarviswashington2149
@jarviswashington2149 4 года назад
The radiator hose gets hot but it takes a min for the thermostat hose to heat and wen it do it stop flowing through the expansion tank and the radiator hose fells like it’s about to bust
@CoolAirVw
@CoolAirVw 4 года назад
@@jarviswashington2149 Please use punctuation so there is no miscommunication. I want to give helpful advice but if I cant understand what your saying its pointless. I'm not sure you can rule out bad head gasket because I don't understand what your saying. But, Its difficult to tell the difference between a waterpump impeller broken, a thermostat that isn't opening, a radiator that wont flow, and the small expansion tank hose clogged. Pull the thermostat housing and inspect the waterpump impeller. If impeller is broken then that is your problem. If not then reassemble leaving thermostat out. If it no longer overheats with thermostat removed, then that is your problem. Check out the small vent hose to the reservoir, if it is flowing well then the problem must be the radiator clogged. Hope this helps.

Wonderful work but yeah, you can't up-sell maintenance without consent. That's the problem with all mechanics. Is a fucking phone call before you do the work so hard?
@CoolAirVw

I would assume most mechanics get consent. I phone call is not that hard.
