These engines can run on more viscosity grades...10w40 is good enough but also maybe is still not too late for 5w40...for original 5w30 vw 504/507 maybe it has too much kilometres...but, try the best for this: Valvoline Max Life 5w40 really good high mileage oil...you're from Austria/Germany?! there isn't so hard to find an original.
I never change the smaller gaskets, still works fine. The Oil I use has the right norm that VW requires. This may be news for you but there are actually a range of viscosity standards allowed to be used for this motor. The one I prefer is one of those.

AZQ is a shit engine! WV should refund the money to all theirs customs. My AZQ drinks 1 liter oil per 500km at 87.000 km! And... it's not possibile to open the engine, to change the oil rings... so I won't buy other VW with petrol engines in all my life.
