This video is the end result of a lot of troubleshooting and finding out issues as they happen! We had the coolant evaporating through the refill tank hose, we thought the van was on fire at first. Looking into it more after ruling out a batter issue, we saw the coolant hose had a large cut down it. So We took it to a mechanic who deals with t25s, and got a brand new hose. Now it's just the pipes getting really hot after only a short drive so I think we might have the thermostat problem too!
Just had the same symptoms and found a seized thermostat. Sadly it's a pain getting to the upper flange bolt on my T25 1.6 TD as the Alternator and cradle have to come off and even then the upper bolt is hard to reach through the PAS mount. The most telling symptom is the cold hose from the radiator when all others were hot. I assume your radiator hose got hot after removing the thermostat?

Yea, lift up the carpet in passenger footwell. You'll see the reservoir cap for washers. So your prob overheating as you've got washer fluid in your coolant

In rear when open hatch by number plate there big white bottle that looks like a washer one, but theres also white roundish shaped resevoir further back to the right with hose in top of it
When the coolant is topped up to the correct level with regards to the expansion bottle/ tank. Then it shouldn't need topping up. Only time it will is if it has a leak and is loosing coolant. It's always worth checking these on any car of any age not just classics. Coolants can differ depending on the country and climate your using the vehicle. Here in the UK. Its moderate weather. Never gets too hot and never stupidly cold either. But as with T25 vehicles and they are classics. Cars made after 1998 normally need antifreeze that uses silicate-free, organic acid technology (OAT). These types of antifreeze offer better corrosion protection so that parts don't need to be changed as often. But cars made before 1998 (VW T25) usually need antifreeze that isn't OAT-based and that does contain silicate. Coolant for Vw's that facilitate this aspect would be ideally. (G12E 050 A2) aka G12evo. Hopefully this helps 🤙✌️☮️
looking at your engine, you have the 1.9 diesel non turbo, i have the 1.7 and was wondering if you could possibly show me your glow plug sensor wire connector, i have a plug that is not connected on my engine and just hanging, on the end of the housing going into the cylinder block from the coolant tank i have 2 connections, 1 for temp sensor and i think the other is the glow plug sensor, i just need confirmation if i am in the right area for solving this none connected plug. Much appreciated for any help and apologies for hijacking this cool video.
Hi Steve. Yes mine is the 1.9 non turbo. I have a plug on mine in the same place that is not connected. However I have both the temp and glow plug light working? I will have a look and get back to you :) No worries thanks for watching! :)
been difficult to work out whicj model I actually have lol Bought as a project.. a flatbed . oi dont even know where to add the fluids lololol . its a 1.9 petrol boxer engine. shouldnt it still use coolant?
Serves you right for not buying german i mean vw genuine parts, only for the fact that you were on the ball you would have been frying the engine, if the woman in your life was driving it would now be dead😕
