Thanks Adam! We were quite relentless with ours, we only had weekends to work on it, so they were sometimes 14+ hour days to get the work done. We were under pressure with time as this was a replacement van. Someone crashed into our previous one and wrote it off so we had to get the new one done in time before our trip away at Christmas :) We finished it with 2 days spare!

That's awesome that you've gone full time! We both work full time and run our own businesses so we get away as much as we can when we have time spare 😁 James is 6"7 so it's a bit of a squeeze for him at times but we love it! We'll probably get a pop top eventually when money allows, but until then we're making the most of getting out and about again. (This is our second T5, couldn't be without one now)

I'm 51 so I still work ATM, but the plan is to save enough money to last me until I get my pension so in about 18months I will be back in France for good...

Sorry hadn’t seen your reply, we used hidden clips to attach the ply to the van, we got them from Mega Van Mats 😊

Simon Johnson it can definitely be done cheaper than what we spent (we know as our last van we converted cost us significantly less 😊) but we’d always recommend converting your own if you’re happy to invest the time, we saved about £4000 doing it ourself over buying a pre converted one or paying someone else to convert it for us. Hope your dream becomes a reality soon!

David North thank you so much 😊 there’s definitely a lot more advantages to doing a self build than just the money saving. We got a layout that works perfectly for us and how we use our van and most importantly we know how absolutely everything works and where all the important components are, so if something breaks or fails (which is more common than you’d think) we know exactly where it is and how to fix it without having to pay someone else to do it for us 😊

davep6977 thank you so much! Yes we’ve done how managed to convert 3 vans now due to people crashing in to them! So we know the pain of having to re do stuff! We also ended up going back on things we weren’t happy with, again no one else would have noticed but it bugged us! Glad you got there in the end 😊

Thanks for the comment Steve :) Lizzy and Shaun are lovely and their videos are great! Good luck with your search for a camper :D ultimately having a white van interior does mean it takes a lot of effort to keep it clean and looking smart. Our view is we spent so much time and effort converting it, that it would be a shame to let it get a mess. Don't get us wrong, it does get dirty as white is an impossible colour to keep clean, but we make sure we clean up as much as we can to keep it tidy :)

Windkisssed hey! We don't have any plans as we sort of just did a bit of online research and went from there (also whatever annoyed us on the last van, we looked at coming up with a solution to fix it) our last van got written off so it gave us the opportunity to improve the layout. The units were from a company called Evo Motion Design, its cnc cut flat pack units designed to fit a T5 so you're right, a bit like Ikea for vans 😊 You can pick different layouts to suit your needs. We chose this one to optimise storage space as much as possible. For the bed, we didn't have much to choose from, we wanted as much storage underneath it as possible and to keep it within budget. This one fit our needs the best. We'll be uploading a van tour soon showing how everything works and where we store everything 😊

Juliocyp hey! Thank you very much! The van itself was £10200 and we got it from a van centre in Wellingborough. It's a 2l engine, 102 bhp, long wheel base, startline model 😊

Juliocyp no problem, we got the foil insulation really cheap from Aldi (supermarket) think it was about £6 a roll and we used less than 4 rolls in total. They don't have it in all the time but if you can wait for one of their DIY weeks, it saved a fair bit of money 😊

Juliocyp yeah we used Wickes and B&Q for our first camper and it was so much more expensive. I think we got our Hammerite paint from Aldi too.

Angelina Evans no, we’ve just done our own van. Currently working on a new one for ourselves. We both run our own businesses separately so wouldn’t have time to do vans on top 😊

Zachy Zoo You can slow it down in the settings. It doesn't work on mobile for me, but it does on a computer.

I found it very useful to slow some sections down to quarter speed (in settings) to check more thoroughly what you guys were doing. Boring it is not!

@@AdventuresofSarahJames - I found the video really easy to watch and really interesting to pick up the work flow. How did you start learning (what RU-vid vids or books etc). How did you work out the best order to do things in? What would you do differently if you did it again? The supplier info was great - how much do you reckon was your total spend. What's the breakdown ie van? Conversion costs? Other? Appreciate any info. Just weighing up my options and wondering how much cheaper a self build would be than buying a used van. Cheers.

MrPeterhutchison we used the T5 forum website and Facebook group for a lot of help and advice. If you can weed out the know it all comments and opinions, it’s a great resource. Our van cost us about £10k and then £5k concerting it which includes paying someone £1k to fit and supply the diesel heater. We then added the poptop at a later date. We wouldn’t actually do anything different if we were to convert another T5, having partially converted one before we knew exactly what we wanted for this one. Only thing we would have done is have the poptop fitted first as we ended up having to remove everything and re-carpet after having it fitted. We saved around £4K converting it ourself over having someone else do it for us.
