In this video I show you how to replace a broken rear coil spring on a 2012 VW Tiguan, using a Draper coil spring compressor kit. The Tiguan had recently failed its annual MOT roadworthiness inspection because of the broken spring.
Coil springs should be replaced in pairs, so that's what I did with this car, starting with the broken side. For this first side it took a few attempts to get things right with the spring compressor. This was a fault of how I was trying to use it rather than the tool itself. The second side was much more straightforward and in the video I go through the things I did differently between the first and second spring replacement, that made things easier. Hopefully these points will be helpful for those of you about to embark on your own coil spring replacement.
The video also contains tips on how to make sure you order the correct springs for your VW.
The spring compressor worked fairly well in that it helped me get the springs changed safely. It did require plenty of lubrication and did get bound up occasionally, requiring some encouragement from a plastic hammer to free it up again.
Needless to say the Tiguan went on to pass the MOT inspection with flying colours!

On my VW Tiguan I swang the lower arm down with a jack . Estimated time used on both rear springs was about 1 hour. On my Passat B7 I compressed the rear springs. Estimated time; 1.5 hours. My conclusion is that it's safer to lower the arm. Make sure you don't rotate the adjustment on the inner bolt.

I have replaced the springs on 3 different makes of car similar to this setup. Unbolt the shock absorber at the bottom bolt push it off the bolt. Push down on the swinging arm and remove the spring by hand, you can use the car jack you get for changing the wheel to increase the space needed to refit a new spring, jack up the swinging arm from the ground until you can replace the bottom damper bolt.

Unbolt the shock absorber definitely easier for the rear , but that tool looks awesome for doing front springs 👍

As a mechanic top tip for driveway mechanics 1. Remove bottom bolt to shock 2. put jack under bottom arm and jack up against spring 3.undo the inner hub bolt this would of took you 30 minutes max and saved you messing with the widow makers aka spring compressors !

Didn't know they were known as widow makers but I can see why!

Just the video I was after, as I'm thinking of purchasing the Draper Spring Compressor having got fed up with using the real cheap spring compressors which always seem to be a pain and end up chewing the paint off the new springs. Appreciated the honest feedback. Seems pretty standard Draper 'quality'.

I’m going to disagree with what most people are saying in the comments. Yes, there are multiple ways to do this. Yes, you could support the lower arm, remove the shock lower bolt, then remove the outer mount bolt for the lower arm. However, the factory service manual calls for doing it just like you did, using the factory spring compressor (VAG 1752) which is basically identical to this spring compressor. The reason you had a bit of issues, was because you need to have both rear wheels completely off the ground at the same time. By leaving one side on the ground with vehicle weight on it, you are compressing that side of the suspension, which in turn puts an upward force on the stabilizer bar, which transfers that force to the side you are working on, and pulls THAT sides lower arm upward. You noticed that you were able to push the arm down with your foot, but it took some force, because basically you are trying to fight the torsional stiffness of the bar. With both sides off the ground, you would have been able to push it down with your hand. Other than that, good job on your first use of that. Hopefully you understand this is not me attacking you, but constructive criticism.

Hi Brad, thank you for taking the time to write such an informative comment and yes I understand and appreciate that it is constructive criticism rather than attacking me and my approach. Can't believe I didn't consider the force from the stabilizer bar! I'll know for next time! Cheers, Andrew

Nerve racking, watching spring compressed...i have done it myself by 2 different methods. Using the same compressor method and not using compressor but undoing outer bolt on the control arm and lowering with the jack.

Thanks for sharing that tip on another way to do the job 👍

did it effect the allignment..

No I don't think this method would affect the alignment. If you do it by unbolting the lower suspension arm, then it probably would.

I am trying to get 2 springs for my 2011 tiguan, but I see that there are different versions with different markings and amazon says that they all fit to my car. How did you choose what's the right one?

Hi, have a look at the section of the video from 2:53 onwards. Once you know the 'coloured blobs' code, you can google this and get the correct part number.

This is not the way to do this job.its literally a 30min job. 1.jack car up remove wheel. 2.place on axle stand. 3.use jack to load lower swing arm 4.remove outer swing arm 17mm or 18mm nut and bolt. 5.DONT NOT TOUCH INNER BOLT ON SWING ARM.ITS OFF CENTRED AND FOR ADJUSTING TOE.IT WILL ALLOW YOU TO PIVOT .TRUST ME. 6.lower arm and old spring can be removed.it will not fly out and take your head off.especially if its broken.springs in swings arms have no where near the load of a front spring.

Sorry but this is absolutely the wrong application for tis type of spring compressor, over complicates what should be a simple job. Removal is easily accomplished without a spring compressor, once the rear of the vehicle is on stands take the weight of the suspension on the outer end of the bottom arm on a jack, loosen bolts on both ends taking care not to rotate the adjustment on the inner bolt, remove outer bolt and lower jack allowing lower arm to swing down and spring to be removed, reverse process to install.

Thank you for sharing your approach to this job. Whilst I acknowledge that my first use of the spring compressor wasn't at all fast or slick, I think it's a little harsh to say this was absolutely the wrong application for the spring compressor. The 2nd side featured later on in the video was much quicker. There is often more than one way to do a job and I'm sure everyone has their own preference. I know there are other videos on RU-vid of people doing this job: some do it my way and some do it your way. Another thing to mention is that on the car featured in this video, I remember thinking that the lower arm bolts looked like they would be trouble (lots of rust), so I was glad to leave them well alone. I've had many battles with seized suspension fasteners! Cheers
