Be glad you don't have to deal with the crap sealed beam headlights used here in the US...definitely inferior to the standard headlights used in Europe (and apparently Australia as well). Upgrading them to something better may technically be illegal but definitely results in better visibility!
Thanks, the good thing about sealed beams though is they have the mounting buckets so the LED lights bolt straight in. The euro/Aussie lights don’t have them so they need to be added, I fitted them to mine many years back to fit the hella lights.
I have those last one in my 69 bug. They have been pretty good. Had to modify the backing plate to get them to sit good. They have been in about a year and have the halo as a running light all the time because I have running lights on the top of the fender. And turned the yellow halo into the turn signal. But very happy with them. But good video.
@@dustinluse9232 yes I had to cut the plate up on the back to get them to fit. And had to carefully around the adjusters. Because I can adjust the lights just like with the stock bulbs in.
@@MP-hx8fs thank you for getting back to me so quickly that is very helpful I was planning to do the same but wanted to check if anyone had success with the process. The wife was trying to do something nice for me and bought them without me knowing and its past the return date so I have to figure something out or see if I can craft a backing plate for it myself. Datsun Zed's also suffer from dim/high draw amps. From the original set up.(low output gen.) We use HIDs. Because after it fires up. It only needs a few volts to stay lit.
Same with early vws that have generators instead of alternators, only thing to watch with them is HIDsbdont like unstable voltage, Datsuns must be a little more stable.
Thanks for the informative and thorough testing. Good stuff. However, I am wondering about the black bars on the last set (the H4 mini projectors) and that you thought it was something to do with the lenses. I think it may be that the point the light emits from may not be in the right place (either too far forward, or back). Remember, the reflectors in lights (headlights, torches, flashlights, even satellite dishes, etc) are parabolic and that means there is a focal point where the lamp is placed in proximity. It might be worth placing a standard H4 bulb next to one of these projector bulbs lined up at the p43t flange and see if the position of the light source is significantly different.

That happen to me, I put the black sealed ones in my car around 2 and a half year ago, it drives me crazy when I see another beetle with them. Know I want to buy ones for wranglers before 2017 that's gives the look of the last wranglers. I really like the DRL and turn signal but if not I will go like yous. Pd: my black sealed ones when I put the turn signals the DRL goes off then goes on automatically
Hey Mate. We make a classic style LED projector 7” sealed beam. Zero glare unlike these LEDs in a reflector housing. Made right here in Australia, check us out!
LOVE the light output and beam pattern on these. Sadly though i only got to see it for 10 mins and the low beam stopped working on one of them. The replacement came today and only lasted for 30m. I love these lights but damn, two duds back to back is bugging me. The ONE working one is better than the 2 stock as far as usable light. Hope 3rd time's a charm.
Hi Nathan, it might be worth checking the voltage at your headlight plug, LEDs are a lot more sensitive, if it’s fluctuating due to bad grounds or regulator that might be why they keep dying.
@@BoostedVW the truck is a 1970 so there's not much as far as Electronics. The voltage test good and the low beam power does turn off when the high-beam is selected so it's not running both. I'll take a better look at my grounds throughout the truck cuz that is very possible given the age.
Just plug and play you don’t need to alter anything so just make sure the wiring on your headlight plug is correct. Regular incandescent bulbs will still work if the polarity is wrong but not LEDs

Thanks Danny, type 3 use the same headlights as beetles, if it’s a US spec car these lights should bolt straight in but if not you need to fit the mounting buckets first.
@@michaelbrendle794 nice, no secret other than you don’t need to cover the entire panels with the deadener, only about 50% coverage is needed to be completely effective.

Hi Max, I had to fit the US style sealed beam mounting buckets then they plug and play, most vw shops sell them or you can get universal ones on eBay and modify them to fit
I have a 72 1302 I'm doing up and I have halo lights - do they need a special mounting bracket - Ive looked and cant find anything - how did you do yours?
Hi David, if you’re in Europe, Australia etc your car should have the 3 screw headlights which need the adapter buckets fitted, you can buy them on eBay etc, I just managed to find some genuine Vw US spec sealed beam ones for mine at a swap meet.
It’s just 2 male terminals between the original Parker light wire. If your car is USA spec it won’t have that wire, you would need to extend it from the turn signal side markers.
