He said something about how, because they were Christian, they needed to justify these kinds of acts. That reminds me of a Frederick Douglass quote on how America has 2 religions: the Christianity of Christ and the Christianity of America. The former preaches love, acceptance, and compassion, which is what Douglass devoted himself to. The latter is what was truly being practiced in America, preaching to divide people, to bring down those who don’t “look” like God, justifying violence and oppression, and you can see that with modern day evangelicals and fundamentalists.

Religion itself is an attempt to isolate and divide. That is how you establish control over the masses. You put them on teams and pit those teams against each other. Then you just play referee and sell hotdogs and beer to the crowd watching. It's called Mericanism now, but it's pretty much the playbook of all societies in recorded human history.

We had a similar situation in here in Colorado. It seemed like we had a _really_ good handle on Covid19. The infection had started and risen for a while, but then we responded with a few responsible practices and it declined. Then it declined a little further and seemed to level off. Recently, though, the infection rate started to climb again. I wanted to know why, I did some digging, and it turns out, we made the mistake of receiving a few visitors from states where they _don't_ have a good handle on it, and because _those_ states have been irresponsible and not recognized the need for sacrifice of everyday conveniences, our sacrifices have been negated. Yeah, I'm a little indignant about that. Because these states have refused to sacrifice _at all,_ we have to sacrifice that much more that much longer. Now our governor has had to join the chorus of governors issuing mask orders for everyone going out in public.

He's right. The way we 'do school' will have to change. The way we 'do life' will have to change, too. Can I suggest three day weeks - but not everybody does the same three days. So schools, amenities and places of employment, would be open every day but each of us only has to be in there three days. Same wages - less work - more people able to find work. And schools (along with work) will have to get 21st century. More people should be encouraged to work from home. Children should be helped to study at home. It should reduce the opportunities for infection with this virus and future viruses. It would also cut congestion, on the roads, reduce burglary rates and give families more time to spend together. If governments are able to financially support us during THIS crisis - can they not afford to supplement the wages of three day week workers?

If you've seen his comedy it's on another level because it's not just funny, he's another one who really points out the flaws of society with humor. His pre-apocalypse case is on point, and also his statement about Orange County... there's way to many people in California who don't care, and they're fucking it up for everyone.

The original Mad Max sort of showed the pre-apocalypse a little. There are still regular people driving around, there's police, there's reasonable housing, food, etc. Things are looking bleak, but its not quite Road Warrior yet. Though when you think about it for a little, its entirely possible things were that bad already, since Max leaves the area and drives into the wastes. Which would explain how things 'got bad so quickly'.

If a group of black kids beats the crap out of one white kid because he's white, how is that not racism? Because societally whites have more power? But in such a situation, the larger group of kids has more power than the one white kid. So how are we defining "power." On what stage? Power can be fluid and situational. And what happens when power shifts? Right now, it's easy to say white's have more power, but let's say, hypothetically, things reverse, and black people become more powerful than whites. Does that then mean all the black-hating white people are no longer racist, and all white-hating black people now are racist? If we manage to create a society where everyone has equal power, does that then mean I can hate someone for their ethnicity all I want and not be a racist?? Racism is an internal mode of thinking. It is not based on environment. A white person, making racial slurs, is racist, whether they are in power or not. As is a black person making racial slurs, whether they are in power or not. It may be easier for society to ignore racism when it has no power behind it, but that doesn't make it not racism, and that doesn't make it less dangerous for a society striving for true equality.

Racism has always been with us it was legitimized by the Catholic Church when they were trying to convert the Pagans of Ireland and told them any one baptized was fully human and those not were subhuman. The Irish pagans were glad to hear this as their commerce depended partly in slave trading. Most of northern Europe was very happy for this news as it allowed them to feel ok about selling off people they kidnapped from other places.

I plan to check out Bell’s show. I did not know about it until now. He had me when he talked about how he is raising his children, with straight-up honesty about the world and by letting them watch the news. My husband and I did that with our son with no regrets-he has a realistic world view. Plus, Bell’s a comedian. He’s an intelligent comic, my favorite kind!

No point in sugar coating, having a good grounding is the start of understanding, for clarity I'm white Scottish Marxist and disabled. School has needed an overhaul for more than 20 years. This was=can still be the perfect time to redesign and re-vamp and retire systems that dont work. School should go all year with rotating shift weeks as to on/off === it would help relieve the overcrowding and the some of the bullying. Fewer children lost to the system. Each child should be taught as if they were gifted and talented. BECAUSE all kids are. I know. I’m a teacher that has only been retired for a year. My hand is on the pulse and i will care forever about it.

In some countries in Europe, it's illegal to insult someone else with racist slurs. Simply because racism has no place in society like DUI is dangerous and has no place in society. Now imagine, DUIs are fined, jailed sometimes and then have to go through a group program. What if, the same way, the law required racists to be fined, jailed sometimes and go through a group program where the racist would have to talk to people of color? I believe "good" people are "good" people, and I try to focus on them as much as I can. I just write my songs, try to remain humble, and be kind to everyone! My identity is not my skin color, religion, or job, so I have trouble seeing the separation between people of different backgrounds. Racism itself has nothing to do with a position of power. When we want to talk about racism as it relates to a system of power then we use terms like "systemic racism" or "institutional racism". There's no need to change the definition of a word when there's already terminology that adequately describes what you're trying to express.

Congrats on being able to have that conversation with such a young, but obviously invested, person about George Floyd. I found it hard to have that conversation in a deep way with my 16 year old. I could not watch the full video, and honestly lacked the stamina to watch it a second time in order to view it with him. It was difficult. At least the fact that we marched together in our mid-sized town and they began to really have a chance to think about our legacy of racism, how we interact with our local LE, what we, as a white family, have in terms of white privilege. It's hard to explain to young people in nuanced terms what it means to have enjoy privilege without even realizing it is happening. Otherwise, they think I'm just preaching my worldview from my soapbox...

No no. It’s not the pre-apocalypse. It’s time travel. Here me out. Sometime in the future, time travel to the past becomes possible. So naturally, they sent someone back, who accidentally stepped on a flower or (whoopsies!) made out with his mom at her high school dance or something, who knows. And now, we’re in the alternate, dystopian timeline that split off at that point. But to make matters worse, in this timeline, time travel never becomes possible before humanity goes extinct, so there’s no way to fix it now. So woo! Go humans! We’re the best!

I agreed with everything he said, mostly, but... “race isn’t scientific, we made it up”... I mean, there are scientific differences, as far as melanin content, that CAN BE measured between different races. Don’t worry, I’m not going to say that anyone is inferior, but the statement that “race isn’t scientific”... that’s stretching it more than a little there... there are MANY races and ethnicities, and the effects are INDEED scientifically measurable. Don’t get me wrong... again, NO ONE is inferior due to skin hues and various generic traits that are more common in one country or nationality... I’m not saying that ANYONE is inferior... I’m just saying that different demographics and countries have different gene pools, and hence different genetic qualities. That’s scientific. “Race isn’t scientific” is ignoring sound science.

Race is made up in that depending on time and location one does not remain a static "race". Some would even determine it by a "single drop of blood" which does not even consider melanin levels. If we did consider them then, what categories would they be broken into? How many categories? Would said categories cover all other characteristics that are also tied to said race. The simple answer is no. Just imagine all the melanin variations within a given race category. Or consider DNA results that would actually put you in a different race. Race categories we have currently on forms don't separate based on skin color. Census bureau has Middle Eastern listed under White category. An Asian person could be considered White or a POC depending on who is asking and why. Granted, it seems real because it's a pervasive social construct, and is currently a cultural shorthand used in discussions. But when you dig a wee bit deeper, the cookie-a-crumbles. It's just the best-worst vocabulary we have at the moment, but its leveraging against others is the problem. We aren't just talking melanin levels when we talk about race. Give yourself some time to look up and digest some breakdowns on the search for science behind race and where it falls short. Us humans be quite complex and yet oh so similar at the same time.

Dr. W's redefining racism is interesting. There was a sense that the original definition was not valued or agreed with enough and the extension of that definition requires more substance. Racism according to the Oxford dictionary I read it from a few years ago is when one race views itself as superior to another race. Meaning discrimination is made based on race. A system that supports this is using racism as a factor to fulfill it's outcome... Is there a change in the definition as a result? If a decision is made based on race rather than the objective of an overall system, can that be classified as racism? The American dream is the outcome of the American system, it should not be based on race. The American dream has also got to the point where it might be perceived as an ideal.

My (white) son is an immature 5 1/2 year old, I don't think he can responsible conceptualize racism so I've only made mentions here and there, haven't yet done an in-depth talk. His grandma mentioned the injustice of what happened to George Floyd & the police & later he cried to me telling he didn't want to get so tan b/c the police will put him in jail or hurt him ... So I'm not sure when the right age is.

I'd give your son some time. Part of what is going on is normal brain development, it's hard for most kids (3-12 years) to understand abstract concepts like justice. ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Kohlberg%27s_stages_of_moral_development ) Just set the best example you can.

Honestly, kids don't see "race" unless they're taught to, because race isn't biological reality. Race is a nasty little system invented by nasty people who wanted an excuse to justify slavery with "science". That's all it's ever been. Kids do recognize facial features, and that other people look different. But they don't learn to think of it as bad except from other people who teach them that. So you can do better. Teach him that people looking different or having a different culture is never a reason to treat them differently. When he's older, teach him that race is something that was never supposed to exist, that doesn't deserve to exist. Being "colorblind" isn't about plugging your ears and covering your eyes and pretending racism doesn't exist. Race is like the boogeyman: It's not real, but the fear is, and people act like it is real. So what it really means is - recognize and stand up against racism, but also remember not to internalize it, not to accept that racial categories are just "how things are". We need to get rid of race. But the only way to do that is to first address the effects of it. One without the other isn't enough. And I think that's the most important thing we could be teaching kids: That you can chase away the boogeyman.

@@FelisImpurrator I agree. He's had some exposure b/c I teach Chinese (even tho I'm white) & he comes to a weekend class at our non-profit but there's few black ppl he encounters in my community. It's a different culture & different challenges that he isn't exposed to, I'd like him to become familiar, comfortable & supportive in a natural way. I didn't have this as a little kid, only from high school.

@@xuyahfish Honestly, America in particular is weirdly fixated on race in a way almost nowhere else is. Like, sure, it's a thing everywhere, but other than maybe the UK or South Africa or Australia... i can't think of many other places that are just so obsessed with it. Cultural identities, laws and systems... I see pictures of US government forms and their race categories and it just confuses the hell out of me. It's like - can't people just phase this out, it's getting ridiculous.
