Performing an alignment on the W124 after installing the H&R springs and Bilstein shocks. The angles were way out of whack. The rear wasn't too bad so I left it alone. Yes, I know I need new tires but I don't want to get any just yet in case I talk myself into getting new wheels. The caster was off in this video also so I did have to fine tune it afterwards. Rubbing is still an issue though. Unfortunately when the car is this low, I will have to make the camber more negative to lessen the rubbing. But, that will cause increased inner tire wear and I want to avoid the "stance" look as much as possible.

over here in Australia, in my state no one knows how to align old cars anymore - some dont even know / do anything other than the toe adjustment because thats all they do on modern cars.

New sub 👍 I've got a '94 SL 500 so a lot of your material is relevant to me. Good clear video with explanation and part no's.

Tell me this tech's shop is in Denver? .. Okay Colorado? ... My '94 C124 coupe has the Sportline suspension, lately its been refurbished with OEM factory components. .. Surely an A+ alignment is in order after the work. ... Cheers, M/S

@@FriendlyMBTech Thank you .. "if it wasn't for bad luck,,, I'd have no luck at all". .. Top shelf Technicians are a rare... All the best. Vail, Colorado ..... P/S., Have you ever encountered a '94 thru '98 Porsche 911 (993) ?? .. Seems there is only 2 tech's in the world. both named Fritz,,, that can align a 993 coupe. .......

@michaelschneider- I've never been to Vail but I lived in Steamboat for two years. I haven't had the opportunity to work on a 911 of any year.

I never saw those ride height hanging things in my life before ! Great video!! Would one be able to use the romess on that car ?
@FriendlyMBTech
@FriendlyMBTech Год назад
I don't think you could use the Romess on it. The Romess gives a reading in degrees and for these older cars, the Hunter wants the ride height in millimeters.

On a W124 the caster on the right side should be increased by 1°.
@FriendlyMBTech

One degree or one minute?
@pierresimenc2343
@pierresimenc2343 8 месяцев назад
@@FriendlyMBTech One degree. Most of the W124 tend to pull to the right if you don't do this.

@pierresimenc2343 I had this same issue. I had my car fully aligned with the Hunter tracking system and the now the steering wheel needs to be held at 1 o'clock to go in a straight line. Very annoying. Also the front right castor is still in red. How is the castor adjusted on the 124?

Fantastic details! Every time I look up information for my 124 alignment, folks always mention “spreader bar”. Is that in this video? I replaced my entire front end and got a decent alignment at the local Mercedes dealership, but my steering still feels stiff. Subscribing!
@FriendlyMBTech
@FriendlyMBTech Год назад
I did not use the spreader bar in this video. From the alignments I've done through the years, I've found the spreader bar doesn't make any noticeable difference to measurements or driveability. The spreader bar gets placed between the front tires as close to the front of the tires as possible. This takes up any tiny bit of play from all the linkages and ball joints and tie rods. When the spec for toe is about 10 minutes plus or minus, you'll be fine without. I didn't see it as a necessary step in my alignment. The stiff steering could be several things. It could be that with all the new components and tighter tolerances, you're used to driving with the loose worn out components. It could also be the steering gear box or the power steering pump, unless those were replaced also.

Thanks. I had the box rebuilt and it was within spec. I’ve never checked the pressure on the power steering line. Is there such thing as an in-line pressure test I could as a garage perform? I rebuilt/resealed my pump paying careful attention to the “vanes” staying in their original slots.

@@darens1926 I haven't done a power steering pressure test for probably 10 years and that was on a w210. If a shop has the tools, I don't know why they couldn't check it.
