Nice video for those who are tech savy. My E400 is a 2016 with the 5.1 infotainment system. I simply got my Android/CarPlay touch screen from DMP Car design which is top of the line vendor. It was all plug and play and also maintained the original car screen interface and with amazing features. You simply switch from original car interface to Android/CarPlay at the touch of a finger. Had it now for over 2 years and everything works cohesively perfect.
FYI, for those wondering, NTG 5.1 was only offered for 2016 W212’s. I have a ‘14 E63 and it has 4.7. So as Kenny said, aftermarket is really the only way to go. A retrofit to the newer system is near impossible.
I've also heard that some 2015 seven, but I have yet to see one. The road top carplay retrofit for the 4.5 I've heard it works pretty good, but I think it's about 250 bucks
@@ExoticCarDIY Kenny, I have a Roadtop in my E63 which has NTG4.7. It’s been flawless since they sent me an update(had black screen issues). I paid $235 for mine.
Great info as always Kenny! I probably would have opted for this DIY option if I hadn't already paid to have my 5.1 updated and the AA coded. But I must say, I have been very impressed with the user interface of AA in this car w/o a touch screen. I expected it to be clunky and time consuming to toggle between screens and functions but have found it very easy to use. I might even say easier to use than the factory touch screen option in my wife's Explorer ST. Even though I paid for it, I'd say it was well worth the expense, as I travel a lot for work and just the Google Maps (and Spotify) integration alone have been game-changers! Also thank you for the heads up on the wireless module! I just ordered one (a slightly different model than you linked) and can't wait to give that a try as well. I have touch AA and my wife's car, and I will admit I and completely content with the knob in the Mercedes. It does seem so well integrated, still baffles me today why Mercedes didn't provide this from the beginning. Oh, and let me know how your wireless adapter works, be nice to offer a couple different ones in my description
My 16 plate seems to have android auto. Added a wireless adaptor which is is a proper good job. No wires just jump in switch the car on and it connects automatically.
Fun fact: On my 2017 CLS63s with NTG 5.5, I did have Apple CarPlay from the factory, but Android Auto was missing. So I read somewhere on the internet that back in the days 2015/2016 or something like that, Apple and Google had a fight in court over something legal, so you can actually unlock it via Xentry or just paying your local Mercedes shop to unlock both or the one that's missing. I told the electric/mechanic that the reason Android Auto was missing due to some legal stuff, and he later confirmed that this was the case indeed.
Finally, this is amazing Kenny.. Thanks for sharing this valuable tutorial. After watching your video, i took my 2016 e350 to the dealership for firmware update just to be on the safe side and not to mess up with head unit. They were able to flash the 15_9 software on my command 5s1 and now i can see Carplay volume in the hidden menu. I also purchased the full mercedes software package from Aliexpress. They installed a corrupted sw for me and stopped responding 😅 So far I wasted $150 for useless sw and paid $185 for firmware update at the dealership. Can you please help me with sourcing DTS monaco from a reputable seller? Thank you on advance
Just wanted to say thank you Kenny for the great video. On another note, I wanted to ask if you happened to code in TSA (Traffic Sign Assist) and SLA (Speed Limit Assist) into your car? I have seen it in action in Germany and its a great feature. I have been looking for info for enabling it but there is like no good hard info. From what I know it has to be coded into the HU, IC, SPMC (Camera), and i believe ESP.
I haven't coded that, but mine does show the speed limit on the nav, but not the cluster which I believe the coding needs to be changed. I haven't looked for it yet. I kinda need some content tho ...

I have speed limit assist om my w166 but it recognizes only speed signs in EU countries so if you know more about specific region coding and share in a video would be highly appreciated. Hello. Do you know if it's working on A Class 1,5D from 2015? I've done the first part and entered in engineering mode. i put on those for carplay save it and restart it. It doesn't show in Telephone menu. I discovered that it had been turned off when I reentered. Is there any benefit to updating the system with the files in order to function properly? Great explanatory video! I was not able to save the coding data before flashing and flashed it by mistake. Is it possible to restore the coding data? I flashed w205 alc213. I'm leaving it alone as it's not a problem for driving, but I'd like to restore it one of these days. Any advice would be appreciated👍
Literally the most important step LOL Anyway, there's probably about 300 parameters you're going to have to go through one by one and change. It literally defaults to just the most generic settings, many times it doesn't even know that your radio is supposed to be North america, doesn't know what speakers you have doesn't know what seats your car has. I have a few example backups from a w212 I can email you but what specific car did you do this on?
It is possible, although I do not know anyone who has done it, I was going to do this on my silver E63. Need cameras, module, harnesses and some coding
Has someone an idea, about the CLS w218? Mine was built May 2015. It for sure is an NTG 5, but I’m not sure if it’s 5.0 or 5.1? Currently running an aftermarket Android screen with CarPlay. This is pretty usable, BUT CarPlay is only running as an app on the Android system, what is not perfect and the sound gets put back into the car audio system via a USB to Aux adapter. (That’s the biggest disadvantage, since you have either factory car audio sound or CarPlay sound, never both) I’d really like to go back to the OEM version of CarPlay.
Thanks for the great videos! One question for you is, were you able to have the amg performance dials (hp, tq, battery voltage) shown on the unit before this update? If not, does it work now after doing the sw update? I have a MY16 e63s as well so curious whether this update will make the dials coding work too
So you may be referencing the people that are running the aftermarket Android systems that kind of piggyback in poorly to the stock stereo. Mine does not offer that since it is just 100% Mercedes. Having said that, there's all kind of cool features inside the coating that one I suppose could experiment with, I do see a lot of options for putting different things onto the screen, I have not gone very far with that experimenting process yet
@@ExoticCarDIY actually it is possible on the stock unit and I have tried coding along with carplay but they didn't work. That is why I asked this question after you updated the sw to see if had tried it. Is the sound option on the menu say "sound" or have the musical note image instead?
Did you restore the original coding to the head unit? One of the settings on the head unit is for no camera, 360 camera, or backup camera depending on what the module name is for that camera. For example I have 360 camera so I had to select SVS 207 or whatever on the head unit. It all should be in your old coding
Thank you for this great tutorial, followed it step by step and almost bricked my HU, turns out you can only do Flashing with DoIP. Tip for anyone else do not try without DoIP connection. I just have one question for you. I also purchased the same wireless adapter and it worms great, but everytime I start the car I have to press down the knob to "CONFIRM to Start Android Auto". Ans it's very annoying. Is there a way to make it so it automatically connects when I start the car? So I don't have to press down the button every time?
There is a setting under the normal menus for "start Android Auto automatically" You can even change it while driving, no computer needed Just curious what almost bricked your car? You tried flashing without doip?
@ExoticCarDIY I tried to flash the new Firmware to the HU without DoIP (I have a C6 so I have to first activate Ethernet in Monaco. When I flashed It started the process, it got up to wiping the memory part and stopped. It wiped it. Got it stuck in "Bootloader" and nothing I could do. Than I tried hours of troubleshooting untill I noticed I had no DoIP. Tried again with DoIP and fixed it.
UPDATE... I have a 5.2... which cannot have carplay added....(previous)Thanks Kenny...great work.. i have read that this is possible with an NTG5..... and that the ntg5.1 has the car play upgrade... am i wrong on this.?... Will it work on an NTG5?
To be honest, I'm not quite sure, I think the best way is to actually look at your car's actual part numbers on both the hardware and the software, and then look it up on the table that I posted here or from other sources on the internet like in HH and see if others have successfully flashed it
Does it work on the headunit thats same as yours from 2015? The car is 2016 model sold in 2015. The previous headunit used different buttons, and my buttons are same as yours. Any suggestion? Also, if i mess it up, can a dealer simply fix it with another update, god forbid in gets to it?
Yes, if your head unit buttons look like mine, then your car should be able to have this update. As for the rescue procedure if you brick it, to be honest I'm not sure. As you can see, mine failed the first flash, and I was still able to flash it just fine the second time
This video should still work, but you might have different hardware and software numbers like I mentioned in the video, as long as you can find a corresponding set of firmware that other people have confirmed working, you should be good to go
What car do you have? I can send you mine, but might be very different depending on options. A LOT was different between my saved coding and the default after flash coding
