Can the Mercedes-Benz E-Class W212 withstand the cold!? Let me know in the comment section what's the coldest / warmest you drive and how the car did handle that!

W212 did OK here. I was commuting to work in Siberia at -40..-30 C. A piece of cardboard or other insulation helps in front of radiator, otherwise the stream just blows heat out of the compartment. Full synth oil is a must for cold starts, look at 0W and check freeze point in specs. After start I left idling for 5-10 min, then checked steering, brakes and shifted transmission from N to D several times. All fluids flow - ok to move. The heater needs to be in circulate mode if it's on high vent setting, outside air is just too cold to heat up this fast. I've been changing steering and brake fluids before every winter. Had a piece of insulation fastened on hood cover, too. Insulation helps building up heat under the hood, coolant flows and heater keeps working.

I think I definetly would NOT turn off my engine at around -30.. -40°C. Fuel lines might freeze if the fuel flow stops for too long. It already has problems keeping cooling water temperature, so I would just let it running. You can put your transmission box into manual and try to keep at least 2k engine rpm. At around 1k and light throttle it produces almost no heat but at around 2k it should make sufficient amount of heat. Sports mode as someone stated isn't necessarry, but manual might be useful. Anyways, thank you very very much for this video. Its really interesting to see this perspective of the world. greetings from germany! :)

They use different kind of diesel in arctic winter conditions which does not freeze so easily. Also additional mask in front of the engine is recommended so that the crankcase Vent Hose does not freeze (happened to me couple of times,it blows oil out of the engine through the oil cap). Also electric engine block pre-heater is must. Due to law it's forbidden to run engine for more than 4 minutes (2 minutes in summer) if you don't drive (atleast in finland).

German cars are very strong. I wouldn't be surrpised even if it started at -60. I've seen TDIs diesels start at -41. It is all about what oil you use, the antifreeze you use, and how much cold your battery can withstand. Most modenr batteries 2009- to now are tested to run good until -55. Even newer batteries and oils are being tested until -70 degrees Celsius. The engineers definitely know that there are people living in these conditions.

To keep cars warm during the trip in -40C in Siberia we use glass-wool blankets in the engine bay and stick a piece of a cardboard in front of the radiator to protect it from winds. However, these measures do help only a little, and only if the engine is "hot" enough to sustain its temperature while running (smaller engines like 1.0L 3cyl will be underheated no matter what you invent.)

In my old 2002 a6 v6 gas, I use nothing. 10mins idle in -40c in cold Canadian morning and it is at full heat. Transmission fluid gets warmed by the antifreeze. So as soon as coolant is at 90c, transmission is usually also at least 30. Oil takes a bit longer to get to 80, but in 10 mins idle, it definitely is above freezing. I never put cardboards or anything. I drove for 1500kms at night in -42c on the hwy doing 110-120kph and I kept the heat set to 21.5C, because if I'd put it on high, I'd die of heat.

@Hannu9999
@Hannu9999 2 года назад
I share the same observation of W212 automatic heating issue with the freezing windscreen even though I have never seen colder than -32 degrees in my car. It needs manual settings in cold weather. It's kind of exciting to drive in such weather knowing that the fuel in the tank is no longer liquid below -29 (living a bit further south on the Finnish side), but it starts forming chrystals in the cold weather. In practice, it is still possible to drive the car below that, but it's always interesting as one never know how far exactly below the rated temperature of the fuel one can go. OTOH, if a diesel starts at all, then it will keep running, as the return flow back to fuel tank heats the remaining fuel that is not used (yet).

I have 2014 350cdi estate. I only drove at -20°C or maybe -25°C but I never experienced any problems except some of the driving assist features stop working. But that problem often occur in snowy conditions also at higher temperatures. My car is 2WD, I wish I had the 4Matic because it easily gets stuck in the snow. 2014 is the face-lift model with electrical power steering so I never experienced that heavier steering feel. One thing that irritates me in winter time is that the gearbox has some kind of winter-start mode that uses really low gears and keeps the revs up. Someone said it had something to do with heating the catalytic converters faster to pass the emission tests. Don't know if that's true but it kicks in if outside temperature is below +2°C and it does not go into normal mode until the engine temp reach normal which takes more than 15 minutes at 0°C. I have the 7G-tronic gearbox but my previous 5G-tronic W210 220cdi had the same bevaviour as well as a 2000 W210 E430 I had many years ago.

Internal + AC for me. Air is dry and heats up faster the cabin. It will also put some additional load to the engine so it might help a little to maintain coolant temp in those temperatures.

@vanyusha1998 10 месяцев назад
@@robert28040 Unfortunately the AC will not work if the temperature is lower than +2...+4 C (at least for VW). Other than that a good advise for wet and cold, but only when still above freezing.
@urbanoman7689
@urbanoman7689 10 месяцев назад
@@vanyusha1998 The evaporator has a thermostat that closes at near freezing temperatures, this will turn off the a/c to stop the evap from freezing but also turns off the a/c if the incoming air isn't warm enough. You can sometimes bypass this by turning on circulation and cooling the warm air from the cabin but your car might have a condenser and ambient temperature sensor so it might not work even with recirculation enabled. My 1991 civic only has the evap thermostat and you can still use the a/c even below freezing by using that trick. My Audi has a more advanced system with more sensors so it may not work, I haven't tried yet.

Temperature shouldn’t be going down that fast. I think maybe there’s a problem with coolant control valve. Because I had same thing on my A6 in cold weather when idling due to this.

@@deki90to It’s completely normal in those conditions for Diesel car to have trouble maintaining the operating temperature. I drove E200d 2018 in -15 C weather and it couldn’t reach operating temperature because it was simply too cold. V6 Diesel is better making heat than the 4 cylinder though. If you haven’t experienced these kind of conditions and how it’s different with diesel you can’t know.

wouldn’t it be better to like tape off the front grille so cold air has a harder time reaching the engine? Then the oil temperature should be less of a problem

Agreed with the engine temp, it's run cold in winter time. I covered the cooler in mine MB, but it did not help much. Thinking about changing the thermostat to a 103 degrees, but then maybe it will be a problem in the summer, I will take a think and check if someone I know has done it, first before I do it, because I think it's not good for the engine goes to cold in Winter time when it is 20 and below. Ps.Do u know some that's change termostat to 103 degrees and if that works even in summertime?

I'm pretty sure stock thermostat is closed anyway when the engine is at 60-70 degrees, I don't think replacing it would change anything in this particular situation.

The thermostat is going to try and keep the temp that it is set for.... But it cant do more than close the circulation... no matter if its a 103 deg o 90deg. And if closing the circulation doesnt get the coolant temp up to normal operating temp then there's nothing extra the 103 deg thermo can do that the 90 deg cant.
