Ken Tanaka of Wish4Fish is back on the water! This time in Pulaski, New York on the Salmon River swinging flies for King Salmon! I was lucky to join Douglas Outdoors on their annual Douglaston Salmon Camp on the Douglaston Salmon Run. We were mostly catching Kings although some people also caught Coho, Stealhead Rainbows and lake run Browns. These fish were beasts!
I was mostly using the Douglas DXF Spey but also got my hands on the new Douglas Sky Switch as well as some prototypes.

Ken, I've been following your work since your montana video 3-4 years back. I just want to say that it's amazing to see your content continue to grow in quality. And don't misinterpret this, your content has always been great in my opinion, what I mean is that just when I think it can't get much better, it does, and consistently so. You deserve to have a much bigger following - but I am confident that that will come in time. This channel is without doubt some the highest quality fly fishing content on the internet. Keep it up, man. Myself and countless others have learned a lot from you. Not only about fishing, but about attitude and outlook as it relates to our sport and by extension, life itself. All that said, it's awesome to see you sort of branching out and making videos about different types of fly fishing and different species. Keep on rockin', man.

Agree, however, the places where you can [really] exploit the use of spey/switch, is so limited on the SR. Unless, of course, you're willing to go for steelhead, when the river has a few less people and additionally, if the sky is overcast, you're in for a treat.

Awesome video, you had the right idea avoiding the combat fishing, it takes all the fun out of fishing. I caught my first salmon on the fly when I was 16 on my first time trying to winter steelhead fish. It was about a 25lb chum on a pink fly with a 6/7 weight spey rod that I had bought 3 days prior. The fight was ridiculous as well as the take. I was walking down stream to the next run and threw my fly in the water so it didn't get snagged in the bushes, and when I lifted to make a actual cast it was on. I remember this all so well because it was only last year, but mainly because the muscles in my arm felt like shredded beef!

Thanks Gabriel. Yeah, like I mentioned in the video I had zero desire to fish the Salmon River standing shoulder to shoulder with people. Let alone with all the horror stories that I have heard. I wish I only knew about this section beforehand. I would of fished it a long time ago.

I mean this will be my fourth year going to the salmon river and it is a little crowded but I've never seen anyone pull a knife on anybody or get into a fight I did have to jump on a fish that was coming out of a net though lol

Great video as always. Im curious, ive caught steelhead in the SR dead drifting flies, but cant seem to hook up with a salmon. what does a take feel like? a pull? a snag? been up there a few times and still cant figure it out....
@Wish4Fish
@Wish4Fish 6 лет назад
Bill, The Salmon are all about timing! You gotta catch them on their run. This was around the first weekend in October but they will run anytime before and after that. Just gotta keep up with when they are running. These Salmon were all caught in the Douglaston Salmon Run. Which is the first 2 miles of the Salmon River and those fish come in HOT! They still have a lot of energy and predatory instincts. They will smash a swung fly and just take off! They are good for at least several good runs!

I mean seriously though the guys don't even get out of the way when you get a fish on? your fish could run between their legs and break off and they probably would still stand there like "what?"
@Wish4Fish
@Wish4Fish 4 года назад
That’s because we are all friend there and we know exactly what we are doing. ZERO fish were lost from fish running in between anything. You think that’s combat? Good luck in public section.

If you haven't fished the public section how do you know it's combat fishing ? I fishing salmon river first year ever last year landed or 40 fish a day between me and buddy
@Wish4Fish
@Wish4Fish 6 лет назад
Come on. So you’re saying the the Salmon River isn’t notorious for combat fishing?
@fisbik1
@fisbik1 6 лет назад
+Wish4Fish it is known for it but it isn't the case most of the time I've met some really nice people in the public section your right you gotta get a spot early but I caught over 60 fish in 2 days I the public section
@fisbik1
@fisbik1 6 лет назад
And it didn't cost me any extra money
@Wish4Fish
@Wish4Fish 6 лет назад
So don’t act like what I’m saying is false. During prime time Salmon season the public section is mostly combat fishing.
@fisbik1
@fisbik1 6 лет назад
+Wish4Fish if you haven't tried it then you have no idea it's exactly the same find of fishing as the dsr besides you don't have to pay believe me I wouldn't be paying that kind of money to catch 3 fishing I brought all my own fly and all my own gear and landed 60 fish in two days so I'd have to say try the public section before you talk like it's a war zone cause it's nothing like your dreaming of
@Raevenswood

F all of that Combat fishing :) great video though :)

Yes, they do take swung flies upstream. Walk and get away from the circus. They will move 3-4 feet left or right to smash a leech, stonefly or a simple bugger. They really do not lose that predatory instinct (although, being bombarded by lead does put the fish down), as the males will smash your fly if you get it close enough and a female will gobble up a nicely presented egg pattern (not her egg). Forgot to mention the price for being allowed to fish DSR property. If you are not afraid to venture away from a parking lot, one can find plenty of water where there are not that many anglers to contend with. The Salmon River can be a joy to fish at times. But if you can't get away from the crowds, pull up chair and enjoy the show. Nice fishing footage.
@Ginseng_tea
@Ginseng_tea 6 лет назад
Its only combat fishing if you let it be. Take a walk to get away from the crowds. My profile pic was taken in a public section and as you can see, theres not a single person around.
@Wish4Fish
@Wish4Fish 6 лет назад
Still no comparison to the DSR. Thats the first 2 miles of stream and those fish come in HOT! Still have the predatory instinct and crush a swung fly. Plus you should of seen the other fish that came out of there while we were there. Huge lake run Browns and Bows are more often caught in that section.
@Ginseng_tea
@Ginseng_tea 6 лет назад
Yeah i agree the best fishing of the salmon river is probably in the dsr section. Just saying though, you can definitely get away from the shoulder to shoulder crowds if you walk a bit. Some of the small tributaries of the salmon river are a blast to fish, youll find browns and steelies in them too.
@Wish4Fish
@Wish4Fish 6 лет назад
Never understood how or why people would want to fish like that! So crazy to me. Haha

Flossing
@Wish4Fish
@Wish4Fish 6 лет назад
That's illegal and not how we caught these fish. That's the major difference between the fish in the DSR compared to further upstream. We also broke off ALL fish that were foul hooked since that's illegal as well.
@termite122
@termite122 6 лет назад
very very very easy to floss salmon as the constantly open and close there mouth especially when most hook up directly on the swing as your rig swings past them and cant be helped at times..the split shot on your rig should have been taken off and greatly decreases the chance of a flossed fish especially in 3 ft..of water where you were..not always so easy to know if a salmon has been flossed as its still hooked in the mouth but most times your fly will be hooked on the outside of the mouth....im not calling anyone out im just saying..ive fished the dsr many years and hooked in the mouth is good enough by me and to feel how brutal strong they are sumone really has to hook a few to really appreciate it...the steelhead in november are the best and much less people as the salmon run is pretty much over by then..
@Diveharderbot
@Diveharderbot 6 лет назад
You 💯 get a lot more takes over flossing in dsr simply put they are fresh in the river and still have that predatory instinct and not 5 million guys standing around them in one hole . So yeah fresh unpressured fish equals better fishing drs for the win

Salmon River combat fishing brought to you by A/Hs from NYC, Long Island and NJ... I've seen them deliberately snag drift boat lines, throw rocks and the boats etc.. Not to mention blatant snagging and their "I bought my license so I own the river and can go and do whatever I want.". Doubt me? Go and watch.. And listen. They annoying accents and attitudes give them away.
