Wabash Central CNUR 7 forges through the Jungle former Maumee and Western Railroad locomotive

CNUR 7 on the Wabash Central Railroad in Bluffton Indiana. First they pull the train across the Norfolk Southern New Castle main to reach the east end of the Wabash Central Railroad. The line is the the former NKP Cloverleaf which ran east to Toledo, now it terminates in Craigville Indiana. Instead of running with an engine on each end like RJ Corman does, this crew preforms a "flying dutchman'' move. The pull the locomotive east with the switch lined for the siding, uncouple the car, line the switch to the main after the locomotives wheels have passed the points.

The overgrown track shots are awesome. I have dreamed all my life about the place where the rails peter out into wilderness... seeing these trains reclaim these lines is like watching new pioneers rediscovering a wonderful old America.

When I was 13, ojn my first motorbike, I went across an "Abandoned" track, looked to my right, and a train was about 20 feet away. Brought home the "Stop, Look, and Listen" mantra in a hurry. Made it across, but damn near had a Brown Alert!

I'm happy to say that this line is being repaired for use for Commodity Blenders in Warren as they are using the line for transportation from West Salem, OH, to Warren, IN. I live right near the line and one day I heard a train going down the line which threw me off at first. But when I was young right around this time I rode the line in the engine; which makes me wonder if I was on this train here, or on a different one when they ran the line a bit.

The switcher releases the parking brake and there is down grade on the track for the railcar to pass the switch for the engine to coupler up on the other side of the railcar so that the railcar can be deliver to customer on the rail spur

The Maumee and Western was sold to Pioneer Rail Corp in early 2012. The line was renamed the Napoleon, Defiance, and Western. Pioneer has put a lot of money into revitalizing the line. It looks so much better than it used to

Pioneer bought the MAW from Woodburn In to Napoleon Ohio. This is the WBCR which runs from Van Buren to Craigville In. It is owned by Spencer Wendelin who also owns the CNUR and was the man who sold the MAW. The locomotives were not part of the sale and were transferred to his other railroads.

Well, I am sure they would rather the railroad be in better shape. But in general it is cheaper and more efficient to ship by rail with the last few miles being over branch line trackage than deal with truckers and the high cost of moving long distance tonnage freight

The customer should be HAPPY that there is even a railroad willing to service them at all. Guaranteed the class 1 that owned this line previously was ready to leave all those SINGLE CAR customers high and dry.

I worked in the office of a scrap yard years ago. One day a locomotive came through the yard right past my window pulling a huge transformer on a car. I'd worked there for a few years and been out in the yard many times and never even knew there were tracks there they were so buried in mud and dirt

@@ScottTaipaleRail Yeah after it came through and left the car with the transformer, you could just see the top of the rails and a groove the flange made. It's really kind of startling to have a locomotive five feet from your window when you didn't even know there were tracks. I knew there was a rail siding in the back, but that was like 1,500 feet away by the bailing press

Thanks! This is the Wabash Central, based out of Bluffton Indiana. When I was filming I didn't realise this was former MAW power that I shot in Cecil once last year. They seem to have a decent operation down here. The WBCR is also owned by Spencer Wendelin that owned the MAW. I'm told the other MAW power went to the CNUR line.

It may be that vestige of a cow catcher on the front of our trains. Originally they were intended to catch and throw American Bison, which can get up to 2000 pounds, off of the tracks, now I don't know, they may just be there to scoop snow off the tracks, or maybe protesters. British trains look kind of naked and embarrassed with their bare front ends when compared to our trains though, don't they?.

the government, ever since the staggers act, has been hands off on stuff like what you mentioned... if the railroad had to wait until they got enough cash to rehab the line, the businesses that use the rail would either go under or move on to using another transport mode... so to avoid that, the rail has been downgraded to "FRA excepted rail"... which means 10mph max speed and no more than 5 hazmats in a train at one time... customers can still can use rail service and the railroad can make repairs while still staying in business

Yes the MAW was bought out by Pioneer Rail and renamed the ND&W. I have many videos of their operation so please take a look! Lot of work on the line, mostly new (used) ties added and some of the worst spots leveled but still very bad. The Wabash Central is owned by the same individual that owned the MAW and that is why the locomotive is on this line now. The WBCR just as rough as the MAW!

Nope not sold to Pioneer. THe videos were shot on the day they were shot but I see these lines all the time that I can say they went back to home rails when the line was sold.

Need to get a prison chain gang out there with scythes, brush hooks, and tamping bars. With the right encouragement, they ought tobe able to line and level a mile a day.
