This wonderful photographer, storyteller, photojournalist is Loomis Dean. He was one of the great Life Magazine photographers and this is a portion from my one hour primetime television special made in 1986 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Magazine.
Life Magazine was produced and edited in New York City and was clearly what they used to call "East Coast." Dean points out how New York saw California, particularly Southern California, as not only far away, but culturally a wacky land filled with weirdos and other "Hollywood types." Dean got the assignment to photograph not only Hollywood but other things that were happening "out there" including early atomic tests, fallout shelters, and more.
While photographers like Alfred Eisenstadt, also a Life Magazine photographer, (also included in my Life Magazine great photojournalists documentary) had the opportunity to photograph famous beauty queen stars like Marilyn Monroe and Sophia Loren, Loomis Dean got the assignments to photograph the unknown actresses and actors (mostly actresses) who were up and coming starlets.
