Cintiq 16: amzn.to/2IE5tvm (Amazon Affiliate Link)
Wacom has announced their new Cintiq 16. Note the lack of the word pro in the description. This is a scaled back version of the Cintiq Pro 16. By taking out some of the bells and whistles Wacom has been able to reduce the price on this new drawing tablet. So how does it stand up to the Pro versions? Lets find out!

I didn't know the eraser on the pen would be a big deal until I tried it out for myself! It feels so natural! Awesome review! Hmm. No, I got a Huion 22 Pro and got it for $560 with 2 pens, included cables, 10 hotkey buttons, and a pen size slider. The colors may be better on the Wacom, but I can always change the color spectrum within photoshop or choose the colors on a calibrated screen and slide the drawing program over with a swatch set.

VESA standard already makes this a great buy. Don't know how this will affect their Pro line prices but don't see anyone opting for the 16 pro over this unless they REALLY need the 4k (parallax subjectivity notwithstanding). Honestly hard to tell the difference at such a small screen. Wish they came out with this earlier!

Agreed. I think Wacom has made themselves, clear. You CAN get the Pro, but bare in mind, it's intended for professionals. People who work at Disney, Cartoon Network, Nickelodean, movie studious etc. I.E the people who need all the bells and whistles. The normal Cintiq is for students and hobbyists, like us.

@Kuchen90000
@Kuchen90000 5 лет назад
@@421cookies Even though I'm pretty sure the Kamvas 20 uses the same display as the GT-191, its still an entirely new shell, with a new etched glass panel. The Display is quality wise something you'd get with / or could get a $300 27inch computer monitor. Its really a stellar tablet for the price, provided you turn the backlight of the display down until blacks aren't gray anymore, and you better hope your unit doesn't have backlight bleed because when those real blacks hit its the moment you'll notice if you have gigantic clouds going across half the screen. And never touch calibration in the drivers, or you'll have to reset it, because it is broken for the entire product line and just offsets the cursor to the top left. I also think their pen just doesn't look and feel quite right, XP-Pen and Wacom obviously despite being similar were more comfortable for me, but its only a minor difference. Despite that once it works its pretty good! If you're buying a Huion tablet in general you should ask them (nicely) on Amazon or their Website if you can't get a little discount. I highly suggest Amazon though, in case of problems. I had to send my Pro 13 back because of horrible backlight bleed, and they gave me 15% off (80€!!) the Pro 20.

Very happy that this has come out just as I was preparing to take the plunge and get a pen display. I was thinking about going with the Cintiq Pro 13, but given that this new model is a bit cheaper with the same resolution, I think I can live with the trade-offs. 1 year later and Huion, Gaomon, and XP-Pen have closed the gap significantly! They all have $350-400 15.6" displays with laminated IPS panels and battery-free pens that support tilt. You don't have to buy a remote or stand either, so that's another $160 advantage.

Here's my experience with it which I bought 2019. I.love.this.thing. Sketching and linearting is much faster, so I'm glad they came out with a way more reasonably prized and improved version over Cintiq Pros (since I heard Cintiq Pros had some problems), and I don't really need wireless, side controllers, or other doohickeys since I prefer keyboards all the way. My only negatives with it so far are: - replacement nibs aren't available locally (have to ship those internationally through Amazon). I live in the Philippines btw. - the 3-in-1 connector that goes from the Cintiq 16 to the adapter is VERY loose. Accidentally move it just a tiny bit and it will be disconnected. Granted it was placed on the floor, which also makes it hard to clean around the area, but I've fixed that problem now when I got a new table with one of them cable management brackets. - I just use it on my table, but my new table's too smooth for the Cintiq 16's foldable legs since it doesn't have *any* non-slip on it. I had to buy a leather mat for it.

I think someone already said this in the comments, but if not; the pro has actually 4 times as many pixels instead of double as you said. The non laminated screen is the biggest trade off. It is probably the first thing you notice when you start using it. Given the similar specs from the 16 inches line of screen of tablets, it is really hard to recommend when you have XP PEN and Huion in the competition. The laminated screen from wacom is what set them apart the cheaper alternative and not having it is a bummer. I hate to admit but the new Ipad Pro 2018 is a far more compelling device at that price range.

@@vedfe142 I never said wacom was cheap. Try to read it again, but S l o w l y. What said was, xp pen and huion who offers similarly spec devices in the 16" line of screen tablets are a far more compelling device. Also true, the ipad pro is abit pricier than the wacom cintiq 16, but if your going to spend that much, by spending a bit more, wont you get a better deal out of an ipad pro? Given it is an all in one powerful device with a laminated screen. Also, buying an old and less powerful ipad (also non laminated screen) and wacom cintiq 16 doesnt save you money.
@vedfe142
@vedfe142 5 лет назад
Nayre i know, i said the Wacom is "cheap", cheaper as an iPad Pro+ Pen and i enjoy my iPad(not Pro) too but the feel of the ApplePencil is shit compared to a Wacom/XP/Huion Pen (and i prefer a pen without batteries, every 3 days i load this shit pen...). But the iPad is alone it gives no other product like the iPad so it wins without competition :D Also i would not compare the Wacom with the iPad Pro beacuse they are different display sizes/products, if i want 16+ inch i dont care about an iPad and if i want a tablet which can draw i only can buy an iPad ;) And Procreate i dont know why everyone like it, i prefer Clip Studio (but i hate the abo modell)
@kiblaze
@kiblaze 5 лет назад
monobär I’m only replying to the procreate part of your comment. The only reason I see more people choosing procreate over CSP on iPad is because of the interface. While I LOVE CSP on my PC, it does feel awkward on my iPad... whereas procreate was built for the iPad so it just feels easier to use. And of course the subscription model was a big turn off for people. CSP will always be my go to on PC/Desktop though because it’s an awesome piece of software.

Ok...the world is ending! Wacon is - finally - offering something half-way competitive! Damned, what happened? Did the intern get to decide the price of this thing?! What? No laminated display, no etched glass? Sorry, nope! As far as I know the newest Huion devices have both, so they are still way more competitive than this! Also: Look at this huge bezel - and no shortcut keyes? Damned, why waste that space? :( "...bumps up the price..." - Yeah, bullshit! Yes those features require extra stuff put into the tablet, but their prices are still way over the top! I bet it doesn't even cost 200 Dollars (or Euros!) to make the Pro 16 and they still take you to the cleaners if you want one!

I got a Huion GT-191 in September 2017 and it was a frustrating waste of money. It started having driver issues and a jumpy cursor less than six months later, and no matter how I adjusted it, the screen hurt my eyes and gave me headaches in a way that a normal computer monitor and my school's Cintiqs never did. Their customer support was a joke. We troubleshooted back and forth for weeks and nothing they suggested fixed anything. It felt like being given a runaround. And in the end they told me to leave them a 5 star review on Amazon for their faulty product before they would send me a replacement. I didn't, because I'm not going to lie and make other customers go through what I did. Now it's just a big, sad paperweight taking up space on my desk. Say what you will about Wacom, after using a Monoprice and several Huion tablets over the past six years, Wacom's cheapest, most featureless tablet has to be better than most of the "competition." It's a shame because I loved my Huion H610 pros and even the GT-191--when they worked right. But it was too much money and aggravation and stress to justify investing in products that only lasted a few months. My longest lasting H610 pro barely made it thirteen months. My first ever tablet was a Bamboo Fun lasted me /six years/ before I replaced it with a Monoprice and then had to replace that with my first H610 pro only a year later. I gave a bunch of different Wacom alternatives a fair shake, because I don't have the means to drop a huge amount of money in one go on a legit Cintiq. If I could do that, I wouldn't have bothered with anything else in the first place. But compared to something like the GT-191, this Cintiq Lite can only be an improvement.

I just bought Huion Kamvas Pro 13 & then this video popped up in my home page lol. So far my Pro 13 is doing really well. Even though most of the reviews says that there's a wobbly line problem, mine doesn't have any (maybe because they updated the driver & I recommend you to download the driver from their website instead of using the CD thingy if you buy Huion). The screen is laminated so there's no line parallax, if you're ok with line parallax I think you should go for Wacom instead. I think it's better to wait a little bit longer for more reviews on Wacom 16 before buying any.

Difference of this and the XP Pen pro 15.6 is the initial activation force, in the XP Pen you need to push harder while the Cintiq will register when you just glide the pen without putting force, this gives you more control on your pressure and the XP Pen I notice a slight offset of the pen even though its laminated there is an offset about 0.5 to 0.8mm, on the wacom its just dead center.

Looks like Wacom put their stylus and chip tech into an alternative pen display case. If only the price was a bit lower. But the pen stylus is the most important thing in the end. I might pick this up. After many years of alternative usage and also Apple ipad pro user. I guess it's time to come home. But damn it's hard to love Wacom, when their prices are with such a margin, compared to the competition, if only a big one, other than Apple, could create a stylus pen experience on par or better than Wacom's.

Wait for a sale, it might dip down to 500 or at least 600, though truthfully, it's current price is pretty amazing for a pen display. I desperately want one as I am really bad not looking where I am drawing. I tried, I tried for like a year, I can not.

It's interesting you mentioned the bonded display as being a pro - from my use (used a Pro 16 for about 2 years), I found two things: 1 - because the display is thinner, there is some flex even with moderate pressure. Which I found made inking more difficult than on than my older and more rigid 22HD (even accounting for parallax). 2 - The screens on the Pro 16s just aren't very robust. I've had two develop swathes of stuck pixels in less than a year. A quick search on twitter shows many others are having the same problem. I've been using them in the same way as my 22HD which I had for 5 - 6 years, and it's screen us still free of stuck / dead pixels. The thicker glass may actually be a plus if the unit is more reliable in the long run.

I have a Cintiq pro 27” and 16” at work and have been using a Huion Kamvas pro 13” and a 12.9” iPad Pro+Astropad with zBrush, Substance and Photoshop on a Mac at home. A few points from me; 1. I am really not sure who the 16” Cintiq is aimed at as it seems to fit between the useful size ranges of being ‘pro’ or ‘portable’. 16” in reality doesn’t feel much of a step up from 13” especially without 4K. 2. I don’t think that the non-laminated screen is that much of an issue having used an old Cintiq as well, especially with this smaller screen size where the user is mostly perpendicular to the glass. 3. I do like the larger bezel as I would have more room to place my hand which always slides off of the edge of the pro 16”. The bezel is a bit ugly though, the gap between it and the glass will be a dirt trap as it was with the old 13”. 4. In my reasonably extensive experience, Wacoms are easier to setup and far more reliable than any other tablet option. 5. I really prefer to have my hot keys separate from the tablet, just a preference, so that doesn’t bother me. I never use touch either. 6. That price is not a Huion price, but it is a seriously competitive price for a product that doesn’t really have a competitor at this size. In conclusion, I enjoyed your take and that of Arron, and have bought a Cintiq 16” to try out. It comes with the stand for free if you buy it before the end of January.

Well this is interesting. Years ago I paid an arm and a leg for the then-brand new Cintiq Companion Hybrid which still serves me well to this day, but after realizing I never use it as a standalone tablet and that I could use some more screen space, I might as well trade it off for this one, hmm. I've been using custom screen protectors from posr.us since the beginning that give a nice paper-like feel and are easily replaceable. Big drawback for me however: no Expresskeys! And I don't see myself paying up extra for that remote control-like thingy or the additional stand. I also see Wacom continues to issue custom cables which are a pain in the rear to find replacements of. 16" is a nice, manageable size for a professional tablet. Some interesting things here but others need a closer look. Thanks for the review!
@abcdef2072
@abcdef2072 5 лет назад
Hey, thank you very much for the review! Personally I feel a bit differently about the pen - screen relationship, esp. with regards to the price and I would eventually not choose this cintique. I think for an affordable screen tablet wacom did it the wrong way round to be honest because a "great pen - mediocre screen" combo at that price doesn't make it viable for either beginners or beginning professionals such as design students. I am definitely not saying that the pen isn't great and I really want to work with one in the future. It looks awesome and I bet it offers a great drawing experience. But from a purely functional point of view, 8192 levels of pressure sensitivity aren't necessary to make good art. You can achieve great outcomes with 2048 or even 1024 levels of sensitivity (still going strong with my Nokia, I mean, Intuos 3... :P). A good screen however is quite important if you want to work professionally and realistically design students already do that when they study (conventions, print shops, commissions for companies etc.). The 72% accuracy would bum me out quite a lot. Personally, I don't think you should be required to get a second screen for colours when you are literally already buying a screen device to work professionally, in a visual field, something that requires accurate visual display. :/ The desaturation - something I have read in several reviews - is a negative for me as well because clear and strong colours are very important to me. So for actual beginners this tablet is too expensive imho. As a beginner you need solid functionality, not high-end functions, and instead a good price. If I were to dab my toes into the water of digital art so to speak I would rather pay for a "bamboo type of cintique" - let's say, something with the quality of 300€. You won't get a miracle but you would be able to test if this is something you enjoy. For professional work this is just not good enough imho because of the screen. Here too, I'd rather have a solid pen (2048 or even 1024 pressure sensitivity) and an accurate screen because it makes professional work easier. It's not fancy. It's not the magic of a 8192 pen. But it's practical. I think, it is not realistic to assume that a student or an independent creator would invest 650€ without wanting to use it for commercial purposes. Even with this tablet out now, I'd rather wait until I have enough money for a pro version. I think this is also the reason why so many people are mentioning the iPad Pro in this context. Its pen doesn't have the mindblowing pressure levels of the wacom pen, but the screen is good, the drawing seems to feel very natural (close to no paralax and lag) and its pad character offers unlimited mobility. I've seen a few illustrators and concept artists (e.g. Nicholas Kole) that are so comfortable with procreate and clip studio paint that they use it primarily. Add to that, that Photoshop will be released as an iOS app soon. I think as soon as this happens Apple will be a very serious competitor for Wacom because the iPad Pro is already insanely popular amongst artists and also, if a major company like PS plans to support the iPad I can imagine that Apple will be even more invested into professionalising the iPad Pro's creative specs. On top of that, apps like Astropad become more and more optimized so it's realistic that in the future you could be able to use an iPad like a screen tablet as well. You'd basically have the Nintento Switch of the screen tablets. So, if you consider that you can get a pad good enough that professionals use it and with the prospect that those professional options will be expanded for a similar price to this non-professional cintique, it's a bit disappointing because it shows to me that Wacom is miscalculating the relevance of its features for practical use in relation to the money spent. This is also why the 8192 pen bothers me so much because it seems like a distraction to me. You show people this awesome pen to captivate them even though it is not really relevant to their situation - it's an insanly powerful gimmick - but downgrade the screen, something that could be very relevant. You hand beginners a pen that is too sophisticated for the needs that they still need to develop and to professionals a screen that is not sophisticated enough for the purpose they intend to use it for. The money I'd have to spend for a second screen I'd rather save for a pro tablet. It's evident to me why they do this. If they'd offer a better screen and a worse pen - a less flashy but more practical product overall - most people in the intermediate professional range (and in some cases even in high-end fields, see concept art) would choose this option over the high-end models as a professional tool because it would show that there is a big difference between what you /need/ and what is deluxe. That of course would lower the sales rate of their high end models. This seems like an artificial way to keep their big cintiques as relevant as they still are at this point in time, even though it is not really justifiable anymore. It seems more like curating their superior brand image by creating an artifical state of exclusivity.

@Ragnarok almost every artist who gets a digital tablet mentions how jarring it is to draw without looking where you're drawing. The reason it's industry standard Is because it's easier and better to see what your hands are doing. Have they all mastered it? Yes, of course. But it's still limiting you, even if it's a small limit. I've been using screenless for 3 years now and while I've already mastered the hand eye coordination needed to use them, I'm still more accurate when I'm drawing on paper because I don't have to focus on 2 different things to make one line. That's where display tablets shine. They give you your accuracy back in digital art

You can do everything on the Intuos with these benefits: - No sweaty wrist from screen heat - No parallax problems to worry about - No hand blocking your view of the painting - Don't have to worry about accidentally scratching your precious glass screen (intuos these days comes with replaceable surface sheets). - One USB cable and that's it (you can even use the wireless option and forget USB cable altogether) - A lot more affordable I feel people who believe they need a Cintiq are just making excuses to succumb to their greed and delusions, thinking it will somehow make it easier to paint. It's almost like saying "I can't drive a car unless it's a Ferrari".

Same goes for getting a new iPhone or a new android. You don’t need it, but it makes life a bit easier and you get a nice experience. Some people don’t like screen tablets, but some people do enjoy the experience of a screen tablet. And if you can afford a Ferrari comfortably, then why not?

@@ChibiSugar Except old iPhones and Android phones up to a certain number of years can no longer run certain apps. In my example, I have to resort to using an iPhone 4 because my iPhone 5 screen is peeling off due to a swollen battery. I can no longer install apps because developers only support up to a certain iOS version. If I want to install banking apps for example, I have no choice but to buy a newer phone. Drawing tablets on the other hand don't become outdated like phones do. The Intuos tablets can do everything the Cintiq can without the issues Cintiq faces and you can use the tablet for the next 10, 20 years. I'm giving an alternate way of thinking to would be Cintiq customers: Would it not be even better if you spend the money difference between a Intuos and a Cintiq on something else? Instead of paying $2,000 - $3,000 for a Cintiq vs a $500 Intuos, that $1,500 - $2,500 difference could be paying for house bills/mortgage, or holiday ticket(s), buy you an instrument if you're into music too or perhaps some new clothes.

Last year I bought the Cintiq QHD and 3 weeks later had to return it due to hardware failure. I just stick to my Intuos and bought a 27 " BenQ monitor with 1440p resolution and 99% Adobe. Best actual upgrade ever. An Intuos and a good monitor is a great combo.

Still more expensive than similarly sized products...then again: It is a Wacom -.- Yes, I kind of have a dislike for them because their prices are frankly ridiculous! Even for this they take more money than competitors like say Huion (who have the etched glass and bonded screen as far as I remember!)...still, a step in the right direction, I commend them on it!

@@dreamingflurry2729 you are getting wacom quality. In where i live, this gets only 150 bucks more than an XP-Pen of the same size. You gotta pay for quality. Between the 16 pro its a thousand more, fr this is a hundred and a half more. As soon as I can, I'll get it

I honestly didn't use them when I had them on my 22hd, I always used a Bluetooth keyboard. I can see why they ditched them. They make more sense on a mobile device like the Mobile Studio Pro. As for the remote - it looks fancy, but a compact keyboard will probably be more useful (and cheaper).

I have the small Wacom Intuous and I've actually made many professional artworks with that. I've been saving up for my first pen display tablet (I'm not counting my ipad here because I'm talking about an actual pen display tablet) should I go for this one? I'm SO IN LOVE with that small Intuous Draw that I kind of blindly trust Wacom when it comes to tablets. But what do you think Brad?

It is interesting and not too surprising that Wacom is becoming more aware of the alternatives monitors at this size. However, the lack of hot keys coupled with price difference (plus remote) are a noticeable downside that might still push artist to stick with the competition.
