I just unboxed one today. It came with the wacom tablet itself, the pen, we ordered the stand, the remote and the glove. I carefully unboxed it and set it up for a user here at work. A few thoughts as well. Those are some of the most heavy duty boxes I've ever touched. I have no doubt it would take a LOT to break one in transit. The craftsmanship are top notch. I'm really impressed. Even the remote feels great. Pro tip: If you open it up and wonder where all the extra buttons, sleeves and the weight that come with the pen, they're in that pen mount that screws into the side. You have to turn it around and pry it open. You can hear all the bits in there.. but none of the documentation says this. In fact the documentation is worse that Ikea. There are pictures, no words for the setup/quick reference, not even a smiley face. Sheesh.

I used to think Wacom is the "be all, end all" when it comes to drawing tablet, but man, Huion opened my eyes to the idea that you don't need to spend thousands of dollars to have a high end drawing tablet for professional purpose. Got a Huion Kamvas 24 Plus and never looked back at Wacom ever again.

Wacom is still worth it; if it's a business subsidy, otherwise nope. I do like the sunk cost cope indie artist whom paid the wacom tax though: That Huion/XP Pen still use batteries, lack tilt, lack laminated etched glass displays; have inferior digitisers, lack touch, don't have felt nibs, or whatever Je ne sais quoi placebo to ease their minds.... Used my Huion Kamvas pro 24 heavily since 2021,was a dirt cheap tablet for a laminated glass 2k display: Glass is still matte with zero wear polish; so even in build quality Wacom isn't gapping either.

To eliminate shoe stringing on fast lines in photoshop, disable smoothing from brush settings (not the top menu bar. The actual settings panel).

Yeah. The smoothing turned off and the smoothing at 0% are not the same thing. The smoothing turned on and at 0% is still doing some interpolations, it's just not amplifying the interpolation strength. You can test by doing an acute curved line (like a U turn) very fast. With smoothing off it'll have some "steps". I've also noticed that the mouse has different length steps than the tablet's pen, probably due to difference in polling rate. Also smoothing completely off is faster in performance than smoothing on and at 0%, but it's almost negligible.

I really appreciate the perspective of your reviews. You do a great job of making it clear who a product is intended for. This seems like one of the best display tablets on the market, but it is distinctly for professional settings. It's something that Disney or Marvel Comics would buy in bulk for their offices. It's not for hobbyists, or even self employed artists who work on commissions. That doesn't make the tablet overpriced or unnecessary, it just doesn't fit the niche that a lot of people who would be looking at tablet reviews fit into. I feel like a lot of tech reviewers on youtube don't actually take the market space a product is filling into account, especially when it comes to art products.
@MaheerKibria

I mean even if you are working off commisions and are good at your job the price of this is not cost prohibitive. You can use it as a tax write-off. The question is will it make you more efficient or allow you to take additional jobs. I personally just don't see it being useful. You have worse aRGB gamut than the 16. While it supports HDR its not even HDR 400 certified which means you still need a second reference monitor. As for hobbyist, buy whatever you want. It's not about value it's about having fun. If you have fun with the cheaper alternatives that is great. If you want to have top of the line stuff and can affored it go for it. I get annoyed at unsuccessful so called "self-employed" artist being like this is too expensive or not for "self-employed" artists.

I still don't get why they price the 17 as high as it is, it's not in a good place considering true professionals will choose 20 inch plus screen sizes anyway, while the 17 is still too expensive for the rest of the mid-range professional market, I mean even compared to their own previous Pro 16 from 2021 this is ridiculously overpriced, an extra $900 don't really get you much other than double the refresh rate and brightness, with 1.7 inch extra screen size and built in touch gestures; even adjusting for inflation it is still only slightly less than $700 more expensive than the Pro 16, so I don't see why professionals will not just get the Pro 16 instead, a $2000 price point would have made way more sense compared to both the Pro 16 below and the Pro 22 above. I would say the 17 inch is the worse in terms of value out of the 3 sizes, because when you consider a Pro 24 touch will cost around $3300 today if we adjusted it's launch price for inflation, the 27 inch that cost $3500 and the 22 inch that cost $3000 suddenly doesn't look that bad at all of a deal consider all the new features like high refresh rate, high brightness, high color gamut, and better color accuracy you got on the two new models, the 17 inch just look completely out of place with it's $900 extra over the Pro 16, especially when it even have worse Adobe RGB coverage than the 16, it feels like that it is there to upsale you to a 22 or 27, instead of being a competitive product itself.

@@dpptd30 So I don't like this product but I know people that this would be a good solution for. A portable second display for the semi-pro who doesn't like being stuck at his or her desk or someone who doesn't have desk space. You are a 3D animator that has to work at different frame rates. There are a lot of use cases. I have friends who are 3D animators who love using these. The fact that they can work at 24 and 30 frames per second makes it worth it to them. Also by it being small, it's easy for them to have a keyboard because they have an absurd number of hotkeys and macros. I still think it's not a great value but there are a lot of different types of artists and what might seem nonsensical to one group seems reasonable to another.

I can kind of understand. As Brad alluded to in the video, the new Cintiq Pro models seem to be aimed at the likes of professional design and animation studios. To add to that, I think that includes studios already using high-end Wacom products. However, some 'behind the scenes' videos I've seen suggest to me that they buy them and use them for many years before replacing them when they replace their PCs, monitors, etc, so like roughly 5-8 years. For example, two videos I've seen from different animation studios both had their respective character designers using Photoshop on Cintiq 22HDs. Addendum: the studios would likely also frequently run manual colour calibrations on their displays used in the production of their visual content. Addendum 2: Xencelabs Pen Display 24 and similar models from other brands are still options for those who don't need extreme colour accuracy, high resolutions, etc. I've also seen articles online that point to running manual colour calibrations on existing displays.
@davidadams8025
@davidadams8025 8 месяцев назад
@@kbhasi I hear you, but I still think Wacom is way overcharging here. Of course I know lots of teams will stick with what they know because it works well and is reliable. And I feel Wacom is counting on that here to be honest. To your second Addendum, the Xencelabs is the same quality panel….nothing Wacom has here is particularly extraordinary in terms of panel specs. (As far as I can tell) Pantone and Skintone certified, P3, 4K….this is a familiar panel. And it’s a quality one at that. I used a 27QHD during the first 3 years of my career, and frankly the panel was pretty lousy especially in terms of red. I also used the 22HD briefly around the same time, and it was also a fairly inaccurate display at the time…markedly worse than the 27QHD. And they kept that spec for years and years at a premium price. Of course this one is better than those two, but Wacom has dragged their feet for years when it comes to the quality of the image and now passed the cost onto the customer. This simply is not a $2,500 value (3K for 22”) without the stand even. Gotta spend money to make money, I know. But creative pros need to call these companies out for these sort of pricing practices. To move from the Pro 16 previously (which Brad recommends) to 17 has Wacom saying a price jump of 1,000 dollars is appropriate even though the panel is of no higher spec than the $1,800 competitor just doesn’t check out. Wacom is acting like they’re the only game in town. Which in 2023 simply isn’t true.

When I realised Wacom released a 17inch Cintiq pro model, I thought I would have regretted buying the Cintiq Pro 16 2021 relatively recently. But when I saw the price, nope. The 2021 model is ideal for pro-sumer (as in I did some art stuff as a side hustle) and illustrators, as you said. The super high quality colour accurate monitors aren't really needed in our case. I don't really notice the difference with higher refresh rates and I got the Pro Pen 2 slim for my tiny hands. I am intrigued what they would release for the updated non-pro Cintiq line, maybe this would be the model(s) that suits illustrators more.

I am on the 16 pro now having used it for about four years. in September, my studio bought me an iPad pro and now I'm completely spoiled. The Cintiq fan running all the time and the myriad of cables to be mindful of when transporting gets old. I know it's not apples to apples comparison but I have never drawn on an iPad until a few months ago and consider it remarkable.

I never thought I would ever say that I disagree with every engineering decision that Wacom made with this new line. Small bezels, the reduction of physical express keys, the lack of eraser, the price. I worry for Wacom. I suppose they decided they dont want to tussle with Huion, XPPEN and other at those price points but I dont know how they make enough money to justify such a niche market. People make the same argument about Apple but everyone buys Apple. Wacom isnt as big as you think it is and truthfully, if I gave 90% of digital illustrators a new Huion or XPPen, you wouldnt know the difference in pen performance. All of the EMR patents are expired and the competition's quality has caught up. The biggest difference is nuance in the pressure curve and overall build but man, how do you tell someone to pay $1900 more for a 17" over a competitor 16"? I agree with you Brad. I'm still a fan but I wish they took the pen tech and some of the newer improvements and bundled it into a mid tier.

I actually like the idea of smaller bezels and am okay with the lack of an eraser. The smaller bezels make them look and feel more modern and less outdated. @@charliemartian8720 I didn’t notice any light leaking, but I do have some issues with the touch not being as responsive as my iPad. Also, the palm rejection is not the best either I tend to get stray marks all over my artwork, but I have to go back and clean up. Sometimes it’s best for me just to turn off the touch altogether if I’m drawing in a specific area, I do think I should’ve probably waited to buy the Wacom 27in. I think I was expecting it to be more responsive. Drawing on it is great though, it’s the touch feature I was really going for and I was a bit disappointed.

Perhaps a bit overpriced but still probably the best in the industry. I have a Kamvas RDS 220 22' 2.5k coming from a Cintiq Pro 16. Only the Apple Pencil matches the Cintiq pen for accuracy and consistency. Huion is fine if you're heavy handed and don't use tilt. But if you have a light hand and are traditionally trained, used to using tilt to lay down light construction lines... Huion doesn't quite cut it. It's a very good tablet and will get the job done and obviously the value proposition is MUCH better... but honestly the Wacom pen felt so natural to draw with. And that will affect how often you want to pick it up to work. Also the Cintiq pens are just the most accurate, hands down. Huion and XP Pen have cursor offset issues that become really noticeable around the edges and you've got to calibrate more. The new Cintiq Pro 22' sounds amazing just gotta save up now lol

And in countries like Mexico, it's more expensive to buy any tablet, but especially Wacom, they have prices extremely expensive. I bought an Intuos pro like 2 years ago, and in one week I said, it doesn't worth for the price. I paid like MX$11,500 it's about dll$655.21. It's like twice the price in U.S.A. It doesn't worth for the price because I never felt a premium tablet, in least of two weeks the surface of the tablet was gone, and I'm not going to pay MX$1,500 (dll$85.40)for changing the surface of the tablet. But don't get me wrong, it's a nice tablet for drawing, but it's not worth the price in Mexico. I can't imagine the price of this tablet here. It's going to be impossible to pay.😮‍💨

Hi Brad! In which position would you place the XP-Pen Artist Pro 16 (Gen 2) in the ranking of 16" screen reviews on your website? Above or below the Huions and cintiqs you tested? I find this ranking very useful and would help me decide my choice. Thank you very much!

Hi. I got Artist 16 Pro Gen 2 (upgrade from Wacom Cintiq 16 (2019). It's great drawing device. It can draw nice diagonal lines in Clip Studio but not in Photoshop cause you will see some slight wobble with default smoothing turned on. Depends on what kind of drawing that you're aiming for, it best for character designs, frame to frame animations and other casual drawings. I noticed the colors are warmer or more "reddish" (like skin color) than what I saw in monitor and I can't adjust that unfortunately. What differs from Cintiq 16 2019 is the screen lamination from Cintiq is thicker like 2mm compare to Artist 16 Pro about 1mm or less. The less lamination means the less pen Parallax effect you will be seeing. The old Cintiq is heavier and thicker than XpPen.

@@siew2738 Can you tell me if you purchased directly from the XPPen website, did the import from China go smoothly and within the expected time frame? I know that the Cintiq 16 is already an old product with 4 years of launch, and that it loses in all technical specifications to the Artist Pro 16 Gen2 that has just been launched. But I still have doubts between the two because it is Wacom, and from most reviews it seems to be a very reliable and long-lasting product. Do you feel like you've really upgraded or is there an element that you liked more in the Cintiq16?

I work most with 3D and ZBrush using a Wacom Bamboo, but I want a Pen Display precisely to be able to do LineArt when working with illustration in Photoshop, so the point you mentioned about the wobble would be a problem, but I wouldn't be able to go for a Cintiq Pro at this moment because the budget, and that's why I'm between these two options. @@Flyyyyy- Hi. Cause I'm from Malaysia, buying from Lazada's XPPen Malaysia Store (ready stock) only takes 5 days to deliver. Bought it during the 11.11 sale, it cost about MYR1983(USD423). Pretty affordable than Wacom's 😊 I wasn't sure about how the XPPen will perform in long term, but I'm sure that it requires more powerful pc/laptop hardware to draw on 300dpi A4 canvas cause I noticed few seconds line lagging from the pen. Performance wise are mostly the same and I don't missed much from Cintiq 16 2019 just the slow diagonal lines. It's personal preference though. The grease/sweat marks on XPPen screen are harder to wipe it out with damp cloth. Looks like permanent I think😅

I appreciate the honest review. 110%! 3000k$ for a 22 inch display tablet is pretty much crazyville for me! I also saw a review on the 27 Pro and there is considerable "light leak" YIKES!!! Why is it so hard for the developers of display tablets to make a 22 inch 2k or 4k tablet? I don't need 24-27-32 inch tablet, nor do I want to squint at tiny menus on a 14-16 inch screen. And... why not multi touch but even without touch, I really want better resolution - 2k would be so nice. Am I missing a product somewhere that is 22"? (note: I had a Cintiq 24" for about 6 years and replaced it with an XP-Pen Artist 22. and my only gripe is it's 1080 and Wacom is the only company with on screen customizable menus.- radial menus) Any suggestions are appreciated.

Tablet pro has done extensive reviews on asus flow z13 and x16 (has vids here on yt). The asus pen has bad jitter. Using the surface slim pen 2 will improve the drawing experience but that also has jitter. The major issues are build quality, poor battery life and the possibility of crashing with asus if you look at buyer reviews from different sellers. You can find another useful review by tablet79 (korean but has a eng sub yt vid review on it).

I generally am ok with Wacom's prices. This time though I am not. Like there are things about this that make me want to like it, but as this display is right now It just doesn't add enough value. So 120 Hz is nice and while i would have prefered 8ms response time 10 ms is ok. And the additional gamut is appreciated. However. Since this is an LCD panel the 400 cd/m^2 means you can't really work with HDR content and need to still use a second reference monitor. For whatever reason this display has worst aRGB gamut than the 16. I just feel like I would rather have the 16 with a good secondary display. Or the 22 or 27 for the larger display. This product just doesn't make sense.

I’ve been saying this for a long time; for illustration, I work from my iPad Pro and Cintiq Pro 24. But these fall short for my professional work. As a product designer, and having worked in PDP packaging design and in motion graphics, I absolutely need the best display possible. This is what makes spending $3500 an easy decision for me. While I would never recommend these displays to most people, for a professional it makes the most sense when you’re doing extremely color critical work. That price doesn’t feel like as much of an “oof” when that $3500 is a drop in the bucket compared to your income working in an industry where that accuracy is a necessity. You never want to have a discussion with a color grader, or another product designer and explain why your work isn’t accurate and requires additional edits. If you’re illustrating in your off time or as a hobby, or even if you’re working as a freelancer or don’t need to work with other designers, editors, or content creators, definitely grab the tablet that makes the most sense for that work. But I don’t mind defending the price of these tablets when they’re critical to the work I’m doing and have a direct impact on my income.

I think when the screens are around the 15-22” the screens really need to be 16:10 ratio. The added depth adds a lot to usability. 120hz is nice and if you’re a gamer/artist it would be ideal but on 17”? Maybe not so much. Price is pretty insane. A non Pantone version of the same models would bring the cost down.

For me, the big thing about this new line of Cintiq Pros is the 120Hz refresh rate. That's the one thing that's going to make a big difference for any artist, at least for those of us who draw and sketch on these things. The rest of the upgrades I could do without to be honest. The pen-to-screen experience is THE most important aspect of any pen display so reducing parallax and pen lag are the most crucial features.
@gmcubed
@gmcubed 8 месяцев назад
Ah, yea, I dont think many will need color accuracy to this level at all, but I agree, refresh rate helps a ton. I wonder if there are any competing in this aspect, is it just wacom? (not counting android based tablets, just desktop screen tablets)
@marcuslewitzki4610
@marcuslewitzki4610 8 месяцев назад
@@gmcubed Well, Huion and XP Pen are seemingly the two biggest competitors when it comes to pen displays. But to my knowledge only the iPad Pro has a refresh rate of 120Hz. Huion's and XP Pen's best and largest pen displays all have 60Hz (I think), which Wacom also did not too long ago. Both Huion and XP Pen will probably have their own 120Hz versions out soon enough. As soon as that happens it will all be a matter of who can offer the best price and Wacom will not be able to compete with them. I think both Huion and XP Pen are Chinese so, Wacom will have to focus on other features to keep their lead. Features most of us aren't really interested in I think.

I have one. It's a really nice tablet. 2.5k at 22' is perfect for me, colours are good enough (they look different on my Mac/ iPad though). It's bright enough, the included stand is good, the Huion Slim pen is nice, the felt nibs feel great, and it has an etched glass screen instead of a matte film. The pen doesn't feel quite as good as the Cintiq or Apple pens, which feel more responsive and more accurate but this is good enough. A ton of cable clutter though, Bec even if you connect via the fully featured USB C cable, you still have to use the hydra HDMI usb a cable for power as there's no separate cable for just power.
