I see what you mean... and maybe this is because Wado-ryu karate is a blend of Karate and Jiu jitsu. Jiu jitsu having some resemblance with aikido. Former Jiu jitsuka myself.
Very nice display of traditional curriculum, and some of the defenses against the knife might work, if the timing is spot on. My main concern, is that in none of the knife defenses, is the defender actually disarming the attacker and taking possession of the weapon, just in case the attacker is still a threat.
The ground techniques are great but the most knife defences... Only that with shiho nage could work if one is fast enough. The other ones assume the agressor will execute a straight attack and let his arm exactly frozen in that place.. And a nami juji gatame with a knife is a dangerous game..
Exactly. No attacker is going to leave his arm out that long, which makes some of these techniques useless. Many of these knife techniques look like invitations to get cut or stabbed; I've seen much better ones.
Great video for the early '90's. Would be TRULY realistic if you had a Jeff Imada, Dan Inosanto or Marcada attack with knife fighting techniques from Philippines style with streetfighting modifications and then show the best Wado Ryu defenses. That would truly prepare a Karate student!
Está enganado seu rato ! Você está subestimando o karatê wado Ryu , o karatê mais poderoso que existe. De um mestre mais respeitado no mundo todo do karatê , o único mestre a ter o 10 Dan. Cale_se 👊🔥
Wado Ryu seems very similar to pre ww2 kodakan judo combatives. The influence of jujitsu is easy to see. I have no first person experience with shotokan, only the point karate competitions and basic demonstrations on YT. What if anything did Wado Ryu take from shotokan?
Only the long stances. Wado ryu is predominately still traditional, and my dojo does full contact sparring including punches to the head and throws in order to teach what wado ryu is really about, (self defense.)
ComplexBlackness I have train in both wado ryu and bjj and many of the principles cross over. I have used techniques from wado in bjj and they do work.
@@nickt3169 The most karate clubs were Shotokan, anyway in Wado-Ruy we had arm twists and use of hips to throw the locked arm opponent to canvas. In those parts Wado-Ryu was a contact , but in the training you had to discipline your hit or kick to stop just before touching the opponent. Or we did leg sweeps in very delicate way not to hurt opponent. I think in Wado-Ruy the idea is that you make everything disciplined and very quick, but to yourself when you further train it is like slo-mo movie. But it's not a pacifist martial art, you kill your opponent if you need to. Or break his arm. I am not familiar with Hapkido.
Eu também prático karatê Wado Ryu, e de onde você tirou que o Ju jutsu japonês original que tem dentro do wado ryu é menos agressivo que o jiu jitsu brasileiro? Você está enganado meu amigo

I believe Wado ryu might be a good fighting system for empty hand fighting. But what I see here as a knife defence...dear god. This is nothing but a complete fairytale leading to fatal catastrophy if used on a street. No knife attack looks like this, attacking from one single angle slowly like a snail and attacker then waiting like a statue so one might perform some fancy technique on him. This is in total conflict with reality so why even waste time and learn something so useless and potentially fatal like this. Unbelievable, really.
Believe me, this techniques are shit for empty hands too, nobody wait standing until you'll have finished your move and nobody attacks you like that. I practised wadoryu for 4 years in my early age and this isn't real fighting.
Wado Ryu Organization taken by the American and removing the founder changing their name to Wadokai, meanwhile the founder making another and naming themselves Wado Ryu Jujutsu Kempo.
Karate is surviving decades, survived the violence in Okinawa, born from olds martial arts definitively to defend yourself in streets, how do you say that is not practical? The demonstration are slow and geometrical for whatever stupid guy (like you) see what his doing, just thing before the shittalk bro.
Christ Follower A better question would be, ”why should they?” It’s their art, they can make it however the heck unpractical they want. Maybe you’d be happier with something like Defendo or Krav Maga?
