Always love the reaction to Beni. She has 3 to 4 shamisens at each performance with a "tech" to tune them as she swaps them around for a concert. Did you notice that it has no frets?!?! Yuko (singer) was the catalyst for forming the band. Their aim is to generate an interest in Japan's traditional music instruments with the band. They have toured the US and there are interviews on RU-vid. They are all masters of their instruments and teach. Think about being the sound engineer for them for a concert!!

Good choice for a first look at this very original band. That moment when Beni comes on and starts shredding with that shamisen (3 string lute played with a massive plectrum!) is always a WOW! moment. Scary mask on the guitarist with the beautiful sakura design on his guitar. Babymetal, Band-Maid and Wagakki Band is basically my playlist these days.!

wagakki =traditional Japanese musical instruments.Beni plays a Tsugaru-style Futozao (Thick Neck Size) Shamisen.The sharp, flashy style of tsugaru was played in the streets by the bousama (blind musicians) who developed a more lively style.Blind musicians at the beginning of the 20th century, including Shirakawa Gunpachiro,Takahashi Chikuzan and sighted players like Kida Rinshoei developed a new style of play,based on traditional folk songs ("min'yo"), but with a lot Improvisation and eye-catching finger work. This style - known as Tsugaru-Jamisen, after the native region in northern Honshu - is relatively popular todayin Japan. The virtuoso tsugaru jamisen style is sometimes compared to bluegrass banjo. The classic pick is called Bachi. The koto is a Japanese zither and the national instrument of Japan.The bamboo flute is called a shakuhachi and the second drum kit is a wadeiko The singer's very broad vibrato is typical of Shigin, a traditional poem concert style.Suzuhana Yuko, the singer of the Wagakki Band, began studying the piano at age three and shigin from age five. She graduated from the Tokyo College of Music’s Piano Program. Yuko is currently active as a shigin instructor, singer-songwriter, and pianist. The style of dance that Yuko performs is called Kenshibu ('Sword and Poetry Dance') This is a category of Japanese interpretive dances performed to traditional music with poetry. Kenbu refers to dances that are performed with the help of a sword and Shibu dance with one or more hand fans called Sensu / Ogi (folding fans).The origin is from samurai. In the early Meiji period, Raifu HIBINO (originator of the Shinto school) organized the conventional dancing styles into the current ones by introducing some styles of swordplay.Singing and dancing are performed basically by different persons. The number of performers varies; sometimes one singer and one dancer, but often one singer and two or more dancers. There are no specific costumes for singers, but dancers wear a hakama (divided skirt for men), shiro-tasuki (white sash for holding up tucked sleeves), and shiro-hachimaki (white headband) to express the emotion of the poem.The mask that Machiya wears is based on the Noe Theater, popular in Japan. Masks are an essential part of the Japanese Noe theater whilst the actors of the Japanese kabuki theater perform without masks.The members are Yuko Suzuhana - vocals, Machiya- guitar,Beni Ninigawa tsugaru shamisen,Kiyoshi Ibukuro - koto, Asa - bass, Daisuke Kaminaga - shakuhachi, Wasabi - drums, Kurona - wadaiko.

Akatsuki no ito is also used as an encore before the extra number. The audience sings Akatsukinoito, and the band returns to the stage all wearing t-shorts except Yuko. They always play at least two extra numbers. "Ignite", "Hotarubi", "Hakanakumoutsukushiinowa" and "Kagerou" are all good songs. Yeah, Wagakki Band is top-level talent. Everyone seems to love Beni on the shamisen. She is great, no doubt. I love Suzuhana! Her voice.... damn. She gets me everytime. Machiya on guitar is awesome too. And Daisuke on the shakuhachi! The whole band is amazing. They put on the best shows. When they come back to the USA.... I will be there!

Anything they did around 2017 was great. If recommend yoshiwara lament, gobousei live and synchronicity. Their new year concerts worth checking out too. I like the lead vocal when she sings in the traditional Japanese style but not so much when she sings normally. But Akatsuki no ito is one of their masterpieces for sure.

The first half, before the Koto (horizontal harp) comes in, is Homura; from the Koto to the end is Akatsuki no ito. This is actually two songs that complement each other but are separate. Asa, the bassist, is a vocaloid producer and has other musical work. Here is the part that freaked me out, Asa, is a GUY. But he dresses most of the time like a gal. Yuko Suzuhana (the lead vocalist) and Beni Ninagawa (I think) are the ONLY women in the band. Wadaiko Drums, Kurona; Contemporary Drums/percussion, Wasabi; Guitar, Machiya (the masks you see in some of their performances come from the Japanese theater known as NOE (No), Kabuki theater is typically only men and make-up is used to handle appearance changes, which means it's different. The guy that plays the Koto, Kioshi Ibukuro; and the Shakuhachi flute, Daisuke Kaminaga... is the cast.... and they are each magnificent in their own crafts. (Side note about Asa, his voice is deeper than Travis's).

The other band that I recommend is Maximum the Hormone the songs "Zetsubou Billy" and "Koi no Mega Lover". I really recommend them. ^^

Liking Wagakki Band, ya gotta have a look at "Nini Music, LongMa ",Taiwanese folk metal. She plays a Chinese or Mongolian shamisen, set some where that looks like Mongolia; & she even has Blue Hair !!! Worth a watch !
