Wainwright's passion was IGNITED on this hill / A wander through Windermere

Today sees me take a stroll through the town of Windermere; heading towards the hill that first captivated Alfred Wainwright and inspired him to get out amongst the glorious mountains of the Lake District and eventually to write his fantastic guide books. And boy, what a hill it is!

Going to the high points and the large mountains is great. But sometimes the best Lake District magic is walking through the valleys and going to the smaller hills.

Watching your videos and seeing your love for the area inspired me to revisit the Lake District after quite a few years. I spent a week there last week and realised that I’d forgotten just how beautiful and magnificent a place it is! So much so that I’m returning in October and again next Spring 😊 I did some fantastic walks despite some dodgy weather and loved every minute 😊 So thank you so much for being so inspirational and please keep up the good work ❤️

Love your vlogs. Nothing better than chillin' out with a few G&Ts and letting you do all the hard work whilst we enjoy the views and narrative. Thanks for a really relaxing hour around Windemere 👍 btw, that van you spotted is a Aixam Mega Multitruck. Only ever seen one 'in the flesh' so to speak. A few years go and it belonged to a Garden Maintenance guy from Clitheroe.

Nice to see Windermere and Orrest Head. If you're going to do low-level walks in the area, have you thought about doing Ulverston and the Hoad or Barrow and the Abbey? Keep it up!

Thanks for the nostalgia, we got engaged in Windermere, visited Claife Heights after we chose our wedding venue and got married in Far Sawrey. We’ve done that exact walk apart from going a bit off piste on School Knott!

I have not watched this yet as soaking my bones in the bath. Just completed day 2 of a navigational course (inspired by you), just done part of Kentmere horseshoe, fab day, a tad chilly, and at times windy but got to say, HI HERDY, HAVING A MARS BAR and waved at my shadow. Oh, and I sort of learnt to read a map and use a compass 🧭

Good to see another side of the Lakes. I’ve driven down that road loads too and never walked there. I’ve been to Bo’ness a few times but not walked around Windermere. I’m usually on my way towards the Grasmere area.

Lovely place Windermere. Was only at the Lakes for a weekend and was based at Millom. So a lot of the time was spent in the car. Shame I missed out on some walking but I was with the ex back then and she wasn't into hiking. But we drove some stunning routes and stopped off at Lakeland motor museum on the way back to Shrewsbury. Can't wait to return

You always make my Sunday evenings. I look forward to seeing your walks around the Wainwrights and feel that I am walking right along side you. The beautiful views wash away the blahs every time. I live in a part of Texas, USA called the Hill Country. We have hills with scrub oak, pine type trees (not the Lob-lolly Pines of East Texas), Cedar and Mountain Ash (both of which play havoc with allergies during pollen season) and, although to me the hills are beautiful, they do not compare to the Lake District of England. Thank you for your videos.

We stayed at Orrest Head House in Oct just down the path from the view point at Orrest head, it was a great location for exploring the Lake District. Never knew Wainwright himself sat up there and got inspired to write his books. Enjoyed the video Glenn 👍

So 'thwaite' is pronounced differently in the Lakes? I'm based in North Yorkshire and it's just pronounced how it's written here. Funny how I never knew there was a difference!

Really enjoyed the walk through Windermere. I try to avoid Windermere as full of coach tourists. Not for me. It’s been 15 years since we used our annual Lakes visits to stay in Windermere. Nothing against Windermere but not for me. I did enjoy seeing changes in shops etc. I usually head to Booths first weekly food. I last did Orrest Head 32 years ago and there were no seats like there is now. Thanks for sharing. Those previous photos from orrest were impressive and majestic memories want to take a photo of that view.

I really enjoy your videos but this one was of particular interest because I live in Windermere and my house appeared in this one. I also do my training/fitness runs up School Knott and up the wheelchair access route up Orrest Head. However, my main reason for commenting is to say that you have corrected a misapprehension that I have been under. For at least the last decade I have believed that Windermere was originally called Heathwaite. So, when I heard you say it was Birthwaite I said to my wife "he's very good this fella but he's slipped up saying it was originally Birthwaite" and, therefore, I would comment and, respectfully, correct you. However, my own "double-check" research further underlined just how much research and attention to detail you go into with your walks. You are absolutely correct in saying it was Birthwaite. Well done and thank you for educating me on the history of the Town I have lived in for the past 12 years.

The walk up to Orrest Head is nicer from where we live at Troutbeck Bridge, we love going up there but usually go early or later when it`s not so busy. And your right, the food at the Tilly bar is still nice, although I did prefer the pigs menu was better. Great video by the way 👍

Please Black Crag stop these videos. I understand your physical limitations but Windermere has made itself into a pleasure park. The planning authorities are driven by money and at the cost of any basic value set on monetising the Lakes. Windermere, Keswick, Grasmere and any, even the remotest hamlet "selling" the Lakes. Do not support them by aiding them with video's like this. Contrast this video with your other just released videos. All you are doing is inviting more tour buses, more "adventurers" more cars, more parking, more cafes. Please tell people how hard it is to access the Lakes, show the snows, the wind, the rains, tell them more about Herdwick's becoming "endangered". Be more local. Drive out tourism. Stop road development, Stop encroachment. Stand up and defend the Lakes. Not destroy them by this sort of video.

It is merely an opinion. Everyone is entitled to one. If he didn't mention you personally it is a general comment. Don't take it to heart. Some of the kindest most generous people I have met have had little money.

Thing is, if something is accurate then it is it what it is.. In this case it looked grim. He wasn't commenting on the work ethic of the people, simply that it looked grim. Which it did. No need to be offended over facts. Everyone is soooo offended by everything these days ❄
