Been on a long break. Feel shame for being away too long. Got a graphic design job commission thing going on. If this vid does well (hence the click bait thumbnail) I'll be able to compensate for the lack of views in the upcoming Anarchy Reigns Vid I wanna do. Been wanting to do that review since 2014. Tho maybe I will change it to a more tame thumbnail. I dunno. I need views for Anarchy Reigns.
French cartoons are way less restricted when it comes to nudity or sexual allusion then in the US (Kirikou, Last Man, The Black Mor Island etc). I think it's a cultural thing, in fact we are more reserved when it come to money and religion then nudity.
That was Zone Archive. We know that scene he used was by mistake. And hey, what kind of little kid wants to see another kid naked? NOBODY LIVING ON THE SURFACE OF THIS ENTIRE GLOBE AT ANY SECOND OF TIME!
@@samburger6739 Well tities are just a body part, it doesn't have to be sexualized in every situation. Money, religion, guns are indeed more shocking subjects here
I'm French, and it's amazing to listen to a Wakfu review on an english channel. This anime is a great childhood memory, it was beautiful and the French dubbing team was giving it all !
If I had my company right now, Wakfu will get a PROPER dub with PROPER actors that could PROPERLY fit their voices PROPERLY! Because I PROPERLY care about people’s needs.
@@anthonyrubel4057 anime is the diminutive word used by japan to describe a cartoon. it's like saying it's a comic, not a manga. we all understand each other but the information is ultimately the same. also it's not an anime nor a cartoon it's a série d'animation if we need to be jerks about it.
Yeah the first exposure to this series was a hentai scene between two of the girls. Never knew it was an actual anime series o.o' but I'd watch it if I could find it.
As a french viewer, seeing wakfu not being adapted properly for the west does not surprise me, from little english footage i've seen in this vid i can guarantee you that the characters in the original sound nothing alike and the original voice actors are top quality. However ankama is known to focus solely on the French market, since it is where their main income comes from. this series is a very good one but i would definitely recommend to watch the subbed version of it at least, bad voice acting can really ruin moments by not portraying the grief, anger and sadness expressed by the characters in the original. if you liked wakfu, i would also recommend watching the Dofus movie, it features brilliant animation, storytelling and character designs with a much higher budget than wakfu ever got. It is also part of a multimedia series accross games, books, mangas, movies and pretty much any media available currently, with Dofus being a prequel series that has the same reputation and respect that runescape has, but in europe.
the original voices are 100x times better, and i'm not saying that just because i'm french, the english voices just sounds... bad and fake. I think the most shocking difference is the voice of Nox, in the dub he doesn't sounds like a psychopath at all.
I’m the one that requested this review through his Patreon review raffle. Wakfu has always been such an underrated show that no one talks about and I thought what better RU-vidr to cover it than the pizza man himself. Thank you Pan for finally delivering. Also I always feared that pretty much 75% of the comments were gonna be mentioning Zone and hentai.
Thank you, oddly yellow Sub-Zero. Wakfu is an amazing show that should be known by as many people as possible. Just not the English version (besides season 3)... Also the amount of high quality rule 34 is amazing
France is actually where the term "animé" (meaning, "animated") started being used to refer to animated shows, so it's good that french animé is getting some attention in the anglo world. From the 1980s to the late 2000s, francophone television worldwide was filled with collab projects between French and Japanese animation studios, like _Les Mystérieuses Cités d'Or_ (Taiyō no ko Esuteban), _Les Trois Mousquetaires_ (Wan-wan Sanjushi), _Ulysse 31_ (Uchū Densetsu Yurishīzu Sātīwan), _Valérian et Lauréline_ (Varerian ando Rōrurinnu) (which inspired the much worse Hollywood film _Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets)_
@@jinhunterslay1638 Since french are enamoured with samourai, ninja, anime, manga, and various other japanese cultural manifestations, since japanese are enamoured with their glamour vision of french, france, and french culture (architecture, food, knights, etc), and since japanese and france are two allied since... Well, quite a long time in fact. If you don't take into account WWII, cultural and commercial exchanges between french and japanese are very old, and there was french and japanese cooperation to modernize their army in the 19th century. There were also events like french officers "defecting" from the french army to join different japanese factions during the second empire (Napleon the Third). "defecting" because the Emperor was... Let's say "very lenient" towards these officers. Basically, "The Last samourai", but it was a french and not an american.
@@mealybugs7994 honestly, I'm french and I watched the whole show in french, now I hear scenes in english on youtube and most of the time it just sounds mega off...
English cartoons: we have to be wholesome so we can market toys to as wide a demographic as possible French cartoons: we have to be as perverted as possible so we can market to as wide a demographic as possible
@Brandon Roberts Honestly, I wish Japan and France (And Maybe South Korea) would just do a shitload of Collaborative shows together. Together they could create some of the best shows ever that none of them could do alone.
I grew up with TMNT 2003 so that's some hard nostalgia there. I understand that it's definitely a lot edgier than the 80's series and arguably every other series after it and we all know that edginess nowadays mostly results in cringe but I still think it was a pretty decent reboot. Also had 2 kickass video games.
I also live in NZ, and I'll say this. We in NZ use the same feed as Australia in a lot of our channel feeds, due to both countries having sky network. I watched Season 1 through cartoon network here, so yeah
LMAOOOO This is shitty Flash animation OMG. Gumball is a lot better and it's animated in Flash. Heck, my first animation was in Flash and looks better. I'm not sure this is animated in Flash, and if it is, they cut a lot of corner to get this kind of sloppy animation.
@@CutieMoli I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure your comparing a show that is 10 years old to something that was do much more recently. Gumball started airing 5 years ago at best ?
I'm amazed by the enormity of this franchise. I didn't even know it existed until a few years ago after seeing the Arena Kromaster game at a PAX. I've thought about watching this for a bit, and I'm liking what I'm seeing here.
Ruels voice actor is dead. Not a chance they will make season 4. Its like Shimoneta another gem cancelled because one departed main cast member. But the redub is a good idea.
Reno Neno Yeah but didn't the last one he did that got him into some serious trouble to the point he said he wasn't going to do it again? Granted he does need the views and the usual clickbait, I don't blame him but I hoped, he won't get demonitize or something?
You think these designs are thicc?,But google "Kind of Magic" a different French cartoon ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PEQBz9LxU_Y.html Look at the main female
Seems like the french have really good animators. I like that the characters have fairly simple designs, it makes them more memorable, iv'e seen them like a couple of times before in adds for the games and stuff but their designs still stuck with me. Unlike allot of modern anime and such that just throw as much crap on the character as possible.
The fact is that there is a lot of great animators that study in France, then go to work to the US because French people consider animation like something for kids, and French TV or theater never search for this kind of stuff. Even documentaries about lemon production on Zimbabwe has better chance to be funded than a French animation. It still exists just as an exception.
@@bakaarion2219 Yeah. Sadly, while US or japan were making their pop culture (including anime and comics) flourish during the 2nd half of the 20th century, France kind of went through a wave of cultural elitism where those things were considered as "for kids" and dismissed by the general public. I still have such hard time to imagine that during the 60s (or around that period), France was such a big deal in term of SF literature/movies. Now we barely produce those...
@@masamoon1887 Yeah I remember an itw of the scenarists explaining how they were limited by French TV producers (their deal with Fr3) and couldn't really explore more serious and mature themes they had in mind for S3 (and part of S2). Du coup c'est bien la merde :/
These character need some belts...MORE BELTS, EVEN IN UNEEDED PLACES! BELTS! I know this mostly only applies for video games characters but I will always find it funny
Important, order of watching on Netflix: Wakfu season 1 and 2 Wakfu: The quest for the six Eliatrope Dofus Wakfu season 3 Netflix just played me season 3 after 2nd and that was a mistake. In the season 3 they kept referencing "The quest for...", a.k.a. season 2.5, and I didn't even know that it existed.
It was pretty popular in Portugal. We have similar tastes to France. The dub was also pretty good, with the most famous portuguese dubbers envolved. I enjoyed the show.
Ankama actually has a Studio Ghibli veteran working for them, who worked on both Dofus and Wakfu :) Look up Masako SAKANO and you can see her pencil tests for the series!
Man I remeber watching Wakfu when I was a kid (I live in Serbia), this shit is FIRE. The story is so good and the characters are so loveable it outranks some great anime imo (whether you consider it itself to be one).
We liked manga and urotsukidouji and crazy hentai stuff since 1989, before it was cool! Heck, jodorowsky and moebius invented hentai before it was even created.
@@unitkilla5967 It's only censored in Japan, and it not because of PC bullshit, it's because of retarded Japanese laws prohibiting genitals to be shown in any form in media.
Season 4 of Wakfu is going to happen, man. One of the creators of the series, Anthony "Tot" Roux said in an interview that "in his head, the season was to have 26 episodes but only got half of them out due to budget issues and problems with France 3". One day at a comic con, a fan of the series suggested that he should launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund the animation and voicing of the remaining episodes to complete the series. The campaign amassed over 1.5 million euros, with people from all across the continent donating.
He already used that joke in that video of live action nickelodeon movies, so I guess that's why he didn't use it here. I was honestly expecting it, though.
I loved Wakfu when I was still in primary school, the Polish dub aired on Teletoon (we had that in Poland,it sucked, but hey,it had Wakfu and Dofus on it) ,I'm really happy that you made a vid on it,now I'm all nostalgic and giddy~!
The whole feel of WAKFU kinda reminds of what the context of the Harpy Gee webtoon is in regards to bright fantastical worlds that are bounded by powers of mythology and cute anthropomorphic creatures that often get treated as the sidekicks of comedy relief.
Tbh, as a french dude i can tell you they failed the english dub so hard, even if you're not used to french, watch it subbed, im not an elitist "watch only sub" type of guy but for wakfu, yeah dont watch it dubbed...
This show deserves so much more recognition than it currently gets. It is a very entertaining, well animated action adventure show. I also recommend looking up other spin-off media based off of the Wakfu universe, like Dofus: Treasures of Kerubim, and Dofus Movie 1: Judith. The latter has some of the best 2D animation of this decade and it came out only a couple of years ago. Please, check them out, you will not regret it! :)
Hey Pan, are you going to do a retrospective on Scooby-Doo? His birthday is coming up this summer, making this cartoon mutt 50 years old. Just curious about your thoughts on this series/franchise.
There are *SOOOOO* many French anime way before Totally Spies. We haven't even touched upon Clementine, Cupido & Reporter Blues (TONI IS A GIIIIIRRRRRLLL....!!!!)
It's hilarious how Zone's parodies are often much more well known on the internet than what they're parodies of. That being said, this show kind of deserves it seeing as how much official NSFW art/storyboards there are from it, specifically I remember a webm of like the two main girls taking a bath where there's censorship from various objects / camera angles but in the storyboard they're just straight up drawn naked with no censoring.
French here ! Some info about season 4 : In a recent interview on a French youtube channel, TOT, the lead writer and creator of Ankama gave more details about the possible season 4. Basicly, the season 3 we got was only thefirst half of it. As Netflix, wich co-produce this third seaon only accept 13 episode show of this type. So TOT thought "well, this season will work and I'll get the greenlight for the fourth !" BUT ! During the production of the third season, the TV channel of broadcast change, going from "France 3" to "France 4", wich has way less budget for producing shows. And also, Netflix said that thewatch number of season 3 wasn't good enought to produce a fourth season. That's lead to another issue, as Ankama isset to release a new MMORPG, Weaven, wich is supposed to happen after the event of Wakfu season 4. So TOT is thinking about releasing the story freely as a webcomics, until he got the funding to make the fourth season. The interview, fully subtitled : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6Ry2zHP7qNs.html
It doesn't help the fact that France Televisions have just announced they're planning on closing France 4 in the summer (although, I believe they may delay it due to Coronavirus) and all they've got now is two online brands, "Okoo" and "France-TV Slash" Does this remind you of certain broadcasters believing that a younger audience would do better online and then open the hatchdoors, kicking them from a linear presence and the only broadcasters who have done this are DR and the BBC? *cough*, sorry about that tangent there.
@@mikkaMMD Okay ! UPDATE ON SEASON 4. Ankam, the company behind Wakfu, has announced a kickstarter to be launch in June for the fourth (and final) season of the show. More info on their social media page.
I've watched the whole show in polish dubbing at it's really well done. Every character has it's own personality in their voice actors, you can feel it. I must say, the animation quality is great, and the world is interesting. Many plottwists, even if the story is sometimes lacking, the overall world is huge, and you have to sometimes wander into wikias and shorts to know how some story elements became what they are. 9/10 would watch third time
I to watched this after i was finished releasing my children i go to youtube and then they was like HERE WE HEARD YOU LIKED THE HENTAI SO WHY NOT KNOW MORE ABOUT IT ENJOY and after that i was like "ok so i just beat my meat to a french anime huh"
Season 4 Is still a maybe for ankama, but they want to do it First they have to finish a couple of projects (a movie named princess dragon or something like that and a kids show named abraka) An other factor is money, ankama is poor, they Need money that's why they do so mutch merchandise, comics(there's the manga of Wakfu of someone wants to know what happened between s2 and the ovas) and games
@@coreylineberry8557 Everyone annoy Netflix to fund them. A way to do so is suggesting to Netflix to add the other parts they don't have yet (That somehow freaking STEAM has.).
Season 4 isn't happening. France 4 is shutting down next year and Netflix wasn't satisfied with the amount of viewers watching it. So all of its plot is being fused into Waven.
Apparently, season 4 is already written. And I don't think Tot (Anthony Roux, the main writer) is the kind of guy to give up that easily. If France 4 won't finance it, there's a ton of other TV channels that could. I just realised, Tot means death in German. I wonder if he did that on purpose.
@@c0mpu73rguy I hope they find another way to finance it and bail from TV, it's too restricted for their humour, and the type of content they want to do, they've always mentioned how France 3 and such would reject most of their ideas and how they almost couldn't do Dofus Kerubim because of them. I just hope if they ever ask a crowdfunding that the financing campain doesn't suck like the Wakfunding for season 3 did. Well it didn't suck too much, but, they might want to avoid making ceeertain types of promises. We never got some of our prizes. That, and fixing plot points and avoid another "oops, we forgot Harebourg, guys !" x'DD
YES! Finally this show gets some of the recognition it deserves! I’ve been a fan since it’s first season popped up on Netflix a few years back. Thank you for the review of this great show! 😁
Okay, Wakfu is good, but the Dofus full cartoon (not an OVA) is amazing. This is good use of Flash but Dofus doesn't even look like it's made using Flash, and the story is nice and fun. It's how I found Wakfu
And then there's Last Man, the last golden nugget French animation gave birth to. It's by Jeremie Perrin, the guy behing Dye - Fantasy clip, and it's absolutely awesome. It's on netflix, too. And the comic it is originated from is also nice, but really different.
Yo if we're gonna finally give Wakfu some love and attention, can I get some noise for the spin-off series Dofus: Treasures of Kerub? Set in the world of Dofus, the original prequel Universe to Wakfu, this series behave more like your typical Saturday morning cartoon with a quick story through each episode but let me tell you, it's so beautifully animated and the deeper stories in there can really throw you off with how emotional they get. Not only that but they also star a special character who you'll find actually made their debut in Wakfu. There's a lot to link (and this is all without mentioning the Dofus Movie which is also beautifully animated btw) and I can only hope they continue to pour lots of love into this universe.
This! I seem to be the only person who thinks Dofus was miles better than Wakfu. Which, lets face it, was trash a good 70% of the time and amazing the other 30%.
I love this Dofus. The series and first film is available for streaming on VRV but the dub for the series is beyond awful and it unfortunately doesn’t have the original French dub but the movie does
FINALLY someone shows appreciation for this french animated series! As you point out this show was somewhat obscure outside of france and parts of Europe back in the day. So unfortunately i had to pirate it, having to watch 360p TV ripoffs from Spain with the Spanish dub (luckily i know some spanish) which i must say is pretty good compared to the bwork-shit awful English and Latin American Spanish dub. I discovered this show because my girlfriend at the time played the original Dofus and encouraged me to play it too... only to find Wakfu being announced at Ankama's webpage and being the big fat otaku nerd i was i checked it out. BE AWARE: You also mentioned that the other special aren't available on Netflix BUT and this is a good butt... You can PURCHASE both the "Nox" special and the "Ogrest" special FROM STEAM (yes, the videogame digital distribution platform) Nox special is $2 dollars and Ogrest special is $3 dollars THANK YOU for making this video i, as a Wakfu fan i really appreciate it!
French animation was influenced by the 70s Japanese Mecha anime like Mazinger and Grendizer. They were the first western animators to start to produce in the Japanese style.
@@stapuft technically there is. Anime is just how Japanese people refer to cartoons. Even "king of the hill" could technically fall under anime since that's what it's referred to in Japan. At this point anime is just a style choice in America.
