Dude your montage in the middle there gave me goosebumps and almost brought me to tears. It encompassed everything that was Samurai Jack, truly. Thank You
It always amazes me how good those montages are. They just hit you like an emotional freight train, every single time. That beautiful goth-fetish-having pizza.
N. A. Hartnell you gotta go to the center of the state. Anything southeast of okeechobee is basically new york or jersey. You go out to winterhaven or ocala and them some good ol boys. Right up to pasco or tampa, then its meth country.
Yah would have allowed Ashi's character to develop more (and there relationship), probably would have allowed more of the Daughters of Aku (which where really hyped up to only be easily killed off), allowed for better pacing of the season and episodes, and overall more moments for action, comedy, and that Samurai Jack charm.
remember how ashi had 6 other sisters that jack ruthlessly murdered i seriously can't be the only one disturbed by the fact that those six other sisters were just forgotten by ashi... really? absolutely zero mourning or at least wishing that they had changed like she had?
My own personal theory on that has something to do with the IDW comics, which end with Jack, the Scotsman, the Woolies, the Thief, and a bunch of other people Jack has helped all getting ready to go and take down Aku as Jack looks the same as he did in that prophecy. I know they've been called non-canon, but since nothing in season 5 contradicts them openly I still consider them canon. Anyway, I think that Aku faked being vanquished at some point, and afterwards Jack went back to the Guardian and the portal, only for Aku to pull a 'psych!' and come out of nowhere, teleports Jack to the another part of the world and then killed the Guardian and destroyed the portal. Jack, feeling depressed, gave up whatever kingship he had earned (giving up his crown he had) and went back to his classic look, and eventually he made his way to the final portal and the incident in episode 7 of season 5. So I personally feel that the Guardian's prophecy almost came true... then Aku happened.
I was totally expecting Guardian to sae Jack in the final episode and for him to reveal the full extent of his powers (judging from the dialogue in the original episode we can assume the Katana wasn't his main weapon).
I like to think that the prophecy did come true just not in season5 jacks universe. In a parallel universe i like to think that was the time line the the guardian was seeing and prevent jack from going in but the guardian realized too late.
I liked the way Gendy wrote the resolution to the series... Aku shared his Power Juice with a band of cultists, not realizing his ungodly offspring could ally herself with the samurai and use his own time powers to undo the evil portal spell...
She had good heart in her, no matter how much her mother tried to change or mold her ways. The only reason she followed aku, was because she truly saw him a god of creation.
Honestly I’ve always felt they shouldn’t have gone the love story route with her. Personally would’ve preferred Jack finally get back to defend the Prime timeline while Ashi served as the successor who would stay and defend the future timeline
"I will now talk about season 5" *about 5 to 3 minutes left in the video*.....meh. Season 5 wasn't bad but they tried to shove in alot of stuff that wasn't really needed. Ashi in the end felt more like a plot device / deus ex machina than a character seeing how she instantly knew how to screech out a time portal eventhough she never saw Aku doing it or probably didn't even know he could. The ressistance army was brought up as this huge thing but if Aku never livestreamed Jack's capture they would never have appeared or known and some even met their end cause of this. The rulings of time travel are very hard to make work with, and Samurai jack is no exception as the whole journey he made from start to finish was erased together with Ashi when he slayed Aku. Not only that but before future Jack killed past Aku, a other Jack was just sent to the future. Was it the same Jack or a diffrent Jack who now roams the lands confused in a Aku free future. The end itself felt indeed quite safe and also a bit too sweet for my taste and Ashi's dissapearence from the timeline was badly timed just to give Jack the last gut punch.
Scratch that livestream crap, how the fuck did they reach Aku's castle in time is the real question, we see the leaders of each tribe that Jack saved watch Aku's stream and then they are infront of the army. Also, about that other Jack, it's actually quite simple, at the moment Aku sent Jack to the future, it created a time loop that made possible for Future Jack to go back in time to a moment after Jack is sent to the future to prevent a time paradox, if Jack wasn't sent to the future, Future Jack wouldn't even exist to begin with. But that opens another question: How the fuck did Ashi knew the EXACT moment where Jack got sent to the future? That timing was too precise, and it's not like Ashi knew how to control time travel either.
ultrix soma Don't you remember episode 7? Jack basically told her everything on that bird. People are missing this critical point, unfortunately. Also, are you saying all the portals Jack encountered before Ashi were set to send him to the point of time HE DESIRES? You gotta get a little creative.
For all we know, all he had to do was think about the time and place, or maybe your second time travel is supposed to take you to the point of the initial time travel in Jack's world. Get my drift?
Juan Don Nadie I thought him losing Ashi was kinda representative of everyone he lost. Like she was the embodiment of everything he loved about that future and how it faded from his arms.
Despite a tad rushed, i feel like they did a good job in making it feel much more serious than the very first seasons. I feel that you missed the opportunity to point out the whole contrast with the first 4 seasons and the last tbh. Good vid nonetheless!
I still keep coming back to this review in particular, Samurai Jack and Genndy Tartakovsky are huge inspirations to me. The Toonami style promo for this vid is also my favorite so far, the editing is perfect.
Gotta get back, back to the past Samurai Jack, Gotta get back, back to the past Samurai Jack, Gotta get back, back to the past Samurai Jack, Gotta get back, back to the past Samurai Jack
Jeez dude. I gotta say you killed it with the editing and music/scene selection in this video, especially that section just before your intermission. Great job!
I was 5 when Samurai Jack aired shortly after my parents' violent divorce and it really helped me cope with that since watching this cartoon as a kid really made me happy and excited, not to mention the art style inspired me to start drawing
There are so many simple things that I love about this series. Something about the montage in the first episode is just so powerful to me. It really communicated just how worldly and humble he was. Even so, in a way, he basically had his entire life stolen from him (sans the first 8 years or so).
Am I really the only one who was extremely dissapointed with the ending? Too many flaws for it being amazing. - Aku is broadcasting on TV, seconds later his castle gets attacked - Of course "I love you" is enough to break Aku's control - Of course Ashi instantly knows all of his special moves - Last thing we see of Aku are his eyes blinking in the sword. For comedic effect. No speech, no scream, nothing. - When the future with Aku disappears, Ashi should've vanished instantly - Her vanishing at the wedding is a horrible choked-down-our-throat-bitter-sweet-ending, for the sake of being drama The last season started out extremely strong and interesting, unfortunatly it fell into it's old cartoon network scheme later. Why it was on Adult Swim, I have no idea. There was nothing adult about it, except when Jack killed the assassins and there was blood.
@felixdaniels37 Please give more examples then. Okay, we got three things now. The showing of actual corpses (once), the showing of blood and killing (once), and an extremely forgetable and stupid penis-head joke from an annoying as fuck character (once). The concept of death is not a super taboo for a kids cartoon.
First argument is pretty good. But the theme of hoplessness was around in the old seasons as well. Don't worry, I watched every episode. But as I stated, I felt it went into it's old scheme a little to much for the "mature tone" to actually stick out. No, I didn't want him to yell a meme, but can't you really think of something more epic? Something. "No! How can this be?! Why didn't my spell work!?" Anything. Some kind of little dialogue, even if, admitted, Jack wanted to end it quickly to finally be done with it. It wasn't satiefying for me.
"Her vanishing at the wedding is a horrible choked-down-our-throat-bitter-sweet-ending, for the sake of being drama" Honey, you are SO RIGHT!! That was the frigging ending to Gureen Lagaan!! Hey. Genndy, if I wanted Gureen Lagaan, I WOULD HAVE WATCHED GUREEN LAGEEN!! I agree with almost everything else you said too (but I didn't mind the 'I love you' part) but THAT was what got me the most steamed off!! Will you please sign our petition letting Genndy know we are not happy with this and we're asking for an alternate ending? www.change.org/p/genndy-tartakovsky-samurai-jack-s-alternative-ending?recruiter=724811471&
I am so glad I watched this. You enlightened me to a new and better way to look at the ending, as abrupt as it was this perspective is much more fulfilling.
(spoiler alert!!!) but are we just going to ignore that they created a grandfather Paradox at the end of Samurai Jack, long story short without getting too complicated with time-travel logic Jack was flung into the future by Aku and then immediately Jack and ashi killed Aku creating a grandfather paradox (a future where Ashi was never born), so going off that logic if that future where Aku is dead and no longer exists what future did Aku Send Jack to ? 😲
Time Travel is Magic based in Samurai Jack world, meaning any loophole you find can be fixed with: The Magic fixed the world to accommodate the changes.
The only thing I didn't like about the ending was when Ashi died. I kinda figured she would since Aku was destroyed, however, I think she should've died after Aku did. Having her survive long enough just to die on her wedding day and leaving Jack alone made me more confused than sad. I was able to accept their romance because they played a Dean Martin song when they kissed, which I thought was awesome. He's my all time favorite singer and hearing him in a modern show made me incredibly happy.
The whole show is a reference to the Frank Miller comic, Ronin, which follows the plot of a time-displaced samurai in a post-apocalyptic future. Also, the "they call me Jack" was inspired by a manga called Violence Jack, wherein it said "They call him Jack." One of my favorite references is when a tube-faced alien who didn't speak English attempted to detain the Scotsman, and the Scotsman punched him in the face before he could get a shot. I know Star Wars references are easy to spot, but still... Lastly, I love the song similar to Ecstasies of Gold that plays when Jack is hiding in a burial sight :P
This review was inspired, as someone who never liked Samurai Jack as a kid (not much of an action person) I am prepared to go on a binge of every episode on Pan's Sam Jack List. Can't wait to come back and finish this review once I'm done.
4 seasons of yesness, then dormance for many years. When Samurai Jack came back, it was clear he hadnt lost a step. Season 5 was as grand an ending as could be envisioned.
the ending was weird. he killed aku, who would have birthed ashii, who sent him back in time to kill aku, who birthed ashii and so on and so forth. so wouldn't killing aku stop jack from being there too since he went through the time portal?
I just realized something about that about the finale, Along with Ashi no one from the future exist now. Because they were part of Aku's world. All the people jack met don't exist anymore, nor will they ever will. That's what made me sad.
Batman also trained with many masters throughout the world.he learned every type of necessary skill.his origin is quite similar to jack.but what I admire about samurai jacks origin is that it's done in one shot and with no dialogue.
The ending to season 5 felt more like watching the abridged version of an ending to samurai jack rather than the full thing. Everything happened so fast and then it was just over, like certain things had just been cut out for the sake of being brief. Did anyone else get that feeling or is it just me?
Yeah I really do not like how they retconned the Guardian like that, and the list of complaints, like Reddit has, goes on for me. But all in all it was beautifully animated, and maybe Genndy will stroke our collective meat one last time after that.
everything wrong with season 5 of samurai jack could have been solved with a longer season maybe 24 episodes it was still way better than anything else airing right now
TheSixSilence 22 i would have preferred the 24 with ashis development being more fleshed out and the gathering of his friends being a bit better leading up to the end maybe even a goodbye to them
I can respect the final season for being very faithful to its preceding seasons in tone. But I do wish it had carried on the gruesome, hopeless feeling of the first three episodes. Ya know, when that new intro actually felt in place. In the end I'm glad we got an ending at all, of course.
i am super glad Samuri Jack season 5 went to . I am super glad Samuri Jack went to adult swim becuse if it went to cartoon network it would end up like TTG and the PPGS REBOOT OR THE BEN 10 REBOOT.
dude, MAJOR props to the editing with Ecstacy of Gold. you did a better job than anyone in Cartoon Network ever did for a hype video. I got more than a little emotional watching it
I hate the fact that the guardian died and we didn't even see how he died or when I wanted there to be a sequel, who made him, does the gods oden , ra and Indian Hindu know him. I wish coulda seen the battle between guardian Aku and scaramouche.
Here's how I figured season 5 was going to end: Jack and Aku go to battle Ashi breaks free from Aku's grasp Jack defeats future Aku, goes back to past with Ashi Jack goes to defeat past Aku, does so, but is mortally wounded in the process Ashi brings Jack to just outside his home village Tells Jack "You're finally home..." Jack and Ashi share a kiss, Jack looks out over his village, safe from Aku's evil, smiles, and then passes away. Now THAT would have been one hell of a bittersweet ending, and definitively ended the series.
could be argued that since the paradox loop has reached it's end Jack lost his agelessness when he returned back to the past as a sort of predestination thing
Only positive thing about the ending was the closing scene. Especially when you get an idea over it's meaning and realize that it's fucking sad yet very touching. Nice AVGN and NC references btw.
Technically Iroh wasn't actually on the side of the Firelord when Avatar takes place and if I remember correctly, he wasn't involved with the genocide of Aang's people. He even tried to turn Zuko
I wish the last episode was like the 3 episode debut or the 3 episode story about Aku's birth and Jack's dad fight with him. The series as a whole was pretty good but the rushed ending really started to kill my hype for the show, especially when one episode was wasted with Ashi just walking around meeting Jack's homies.
Jack is after aku for years when sent to the future freeing everyone when with ashi when returned for where it all started at the tower to end the demon.
I wouldn't blame Gennedy for the passing. He was original intended to go for 13 episode, but due to budget cuts, he has to do only 10 episode, which kind of sucks.
"Minimalism" "Minimalistic" or any variation of that word is refered to an artistic movement, not a term to ilustrate something with a mimimum ammount of elements, the word you're looking for is "ABSTRACT" it's already annoying enough that people adopted that word of living a life with less stuff like some sort of current age hippie.
Maybe the shadow lady was that girl who Jack saved her family from the evil spirit and maybe that scene was foreshaowing the comic book to exist. Also, I would hate to say that the ending was the most unsatisfying thing I ever witnessed in my whole life.
