Robby, I'm an old man and have had some recovery experience. A few things that would help you. 1. Those wheel chocks, since you have that nice plasma table, cut you some "teeth" with the teeth angled towards what you'd be pulling, and weld them to both sides of the chocks, that way it'll bite in and hold better. 2. design you some teeth for the wheel lift, so they would bite in also. Might also wanna heat treat those teeth so they will be harder and not bend and wear out too fast.

I was thinking maybe 2 sets of chocks for the wheel lift. One set with teeth and the other set with shovel shaped blades in case there's dirt or sand that will help to dig in deeper to hold.

Also don't have the chain tight so the truck drags it along leave it loose so that it can drive up on it.
@gordonmurray3153

Tbh, imo Casey LaDelle has the principles in place, bases covered, with his Western Star semi and Zaklift setup. A 12,000lb wrecker version imo would probably be ideal for SouthernUtah.
@calvinh.8882
@calvinh.8882 6 месяцев назад
Those wheel chocks on the wrecker will work, and work VERY WELL, but you had the chains too short so it was pulling the chocks away from the tires before the tires could get a good bite on them. You have to leave the chains loose enough for the tires to get about halfway onto the wheelchocks. They really do work very well if you use them correctly.
@corwinchristensen260
@corwinchristensen260 6 месяцев назад
Second that, the teeth on the back of those wedges would hold Fred on even that ice. The chains need to be long enough to let the tire get completely on but not go over.
@WaltFelix
@WaltFelix 6 месяцев назад
Agree, also looked like there are slots on the tail board, where your safety chains are, you can droop the ends of the scotch block chains through those holes and hook them in, leaving a bit of slack. You want Fred's rear tires to roll slightly up on the wedges before the chains grab tight. That puts downward pressure on them for the teeth to bite in.
@gordonmurray3153

My wheelramps have holes to allow them to be staked to the ground. Rory carries a land anchor secured to the boom on Trailmater, I've never understood why nobody else thinks to use one where trees are scarce.
@staceygandy2009
@staceygandy2009 6 месяцев назад
Yep. Those tire chocks work really good. Just didn't leave enough slack in the chains for the tires to get on the chocks and let them dig in. Enjoy the videos!

30 years of recovery here. The "Ramps" that you tried to use to block the truck didn't do their job because they were used incorrectly. First they are called Scotch Blocks. Second they are used with the vehicles brakes released and transmission in neutral, the reasons why will become clear. here is how to use them properly, one put the scotch block on the ground behind the tires, you did this correctly. next you put the chain through the key hole of the wrecker body with enough chain to allow the tires to roll to the top of the apex. back the vehicle up until the chain goes tight. All of the weight of the tires should be on the blocks, this forces them down biting into the ground. If the ground is soft the Scotch block will sink until it is just a flat plate of steel on the ground. You are ready to pull. there are numerous ways to do a recovery properly. when I first saw you using a snatch block I was expecting you to anchor to a tree on the passenger side of the truck, by doing this you would have halved the force pulling the truck back. also I heard you mention the hydraulic winch having a 12,000lbs pull, usually they are 8,000lbs. Another tip when you went to tie off the front of the truck you could have pull a tree saver around 2 trees with a tow strap connected to them, hook your tie off line to the center of the tow strap, distributing the load between the two trees. I am not saying you did it wrong, I am just trying to expand your tool box. I also read in the comments someone mentioned using a spade on the underreach. I have used two different types of these with reasonable success. the spade usually doesn't dig in deep enough and a lot less down force than the Scotch Blocks. If you decide to try the spade route the best two designs I have used are the ones that you slip over the ends of the cross bar, except that instead of having a wedge sticking out the rear to cradle the tire, you have a small blade sticking straight down and the other was one that wraps around the extending part. It slips around the smaller part, it wedges against the larger part as you pull. it has a pin towards the rear that presses on the smaller extension as a load is put on it.

A few recovery tips, The wheel lift shouldn't be used it takes weight off your tires, you need that weight to hold your truck. Secondly the scotch blocks need slack left in chain to allow you to pull the truck on top of them, you shoud have the truck your tow truck in neutral so when you pull back it will pull your truck on top of the scotch blocks. You want your truck pulled right to the top of them to put as much pressure on the spades as possible. Also extending the spades would bite more on thicker ice. Doing recoveries for almost 20 years in Vermont. Also the wrecker would have an 8,000lb winch
@MrUstrccowboy78
@MrUstrccowboy78 6 месяцев назад
The wheel lift was never designed to be used as a spade of and sorts. Yes, Miller does make some attachments to help with ice, but that's about the extreme use other than towing it was ever designed for. Also, use the trecker as an added dead man instead of tie your truck off, which I've seen frames fold in half by doing that.

@13:27 You need to get the truck's weight on the Tire Stopper to make it work. You had the chains set too short so that the Tire Stopper was being dragged ahead of the tire. In the future, back up onto the Tire Stopper and then set the chains. @10:57 when you put down what you called "the foot". You could rig up a quick detach anchor plow on the foot that would dig in sort of like what you have on the skid steer.

The Trekker's gearing is the reason it will only run 55mph. Stick a set of 488 gears in it and you'll be able to run in 5th gear and higher speeds, and while you're at it stick Detroit TrueTrac Lockers in the front and rear and that little truck will be MUCH BETTER at everything, and it will go just about anywhere. I've owned 14 of them,

Robby needs to spend some time watching Casey LaDelle's older videos with his Red Ford Tow Truck. It's quite educational. There are cleats available for the wheel lift bar that will dig into the dirt, snow, or ice to keep the truck stable while using the booms and winches. They also make wheel chocks with cleats for dirt, ice, and snow. Rory is the only one I have seen to have and use a Land Anchor (on Trail Mater). It's odd to see a recovery on an icy hill with no chains or ice cleats on their shoes. It seems like they want to fail or fall for the camera.

Robby, you should consider adding hydraulic steakes to the back of your tow truck. Then all you have to do is lower the steaks into the ground, and you can't be pulled backward. I have seen them on the heavy tow trucks, but they also have outriggers, so they are not used all that often. It would definitely make recoveries easier when you are running solo or don't have anything good to tye to in the front.

To correctly use the chocks you have leave enough slack in the chains for the truck to roll up onto them with the brake off. When the truck is on the chock and the chain is tight then put you brake on. If you run the winch through the snatch block then anchor the end to a tree or rock the truck only has to hold half the weight, A couple buckets of sand sprinkled on the ice makes things a lot safer too.

If you look at Casey Ladelle’s rollback, he has these spikes he uses on his wheel lift to anchor his truck. With downforce you could anchor your wrecker. You can make those with a plasma cutter. The problem with the wheel chocks is that the chain was too tight and the wheels needed to be rolled on the chocks and then the chain tension plus the weight of the wrecker would anchor it.

You needed to let the Chaulks pinch into the earth and the truck tire. Doing that holds the truck in place and some teeth on the front ramp edge will help out even more

King Fred needs some studs on his tires. You should pick up a kit and have Hillbilly put them on 4 tires. They have removable ones you can do it yourself. He could be the Studly King Fred.

One thing you could do is leave some slack in the chains and back the truck up onto the chocks till the chains tighten up then you for sure have weight on them but nice job on the recovery ❤❤❤

In Colorado they put 55 gallon barrels in area like that with 90/10 sand and salt. That way when it gets slick you can spread it on the surface to get traction.

I do not know if anyone sells it in your area but 50 pound bags of rock dust thrown down on the ice will absolutely give you great traction. I used it when I work for a coal mine supply company. I live in southwest Virginia. I always threw some extra bags of rock dust on the supply truck for emergencies it gives great traction also kitty litter also works well on ice to add traction especially if you are stuck and need some extra traction to get started moving again.

On my wrecker, I built a spike that goes into the receiver on wheel lift. Push lift down . In many situations it help. Not always but easy to install and takes little space to store.
