1:47 - I’m new to refrigeration so I’ve not seen the water-down-the-condenser-coil-trick. Can you explain how that works? I would have expected the sight glass would stay clear since the saturation temperature is now lower and there’s _more_ room in the coil for condensing to take place. Guess I’m not thinking about this correctly. How is this different than a hot gas bypass defrost, where the sight glass flashes each time the valve opens to the evaporator coil (bypassing the TEV)?

Basically, I’m imitating a colder day. The pressure drops so the saturation temperature depending on whether it has a headmaster control or a fan cycle control it’s still going to flash for a while if it’s not at full receiver capacity.

I record at 60 frames per second that changes the way things look in the video. Higher the frame rate the more it slows down motion.

@@HVACRSurvival That's not an entirely correct explanation, but for all intents and purposes I guess it works. If you're curious there are two effects at play, called the stroboscopic effect and the rolling shutter effect.

You must be into photography so you know that anything above a 500 shutter speed you can stop motion. At least at most points. Since it's not a photography site I didn't go into great detail but I do know that shutter speed affects the way it looks in the video.

I have on in Colorado that only freezes coil in July and August which are by far the most humid months here. The door is opened every 2 minutes as they are in and out constantly. Had curtains but they dont like them and take them down. They use it like its an air conditioner for 10hrs a day for 2 months. Also can't give condenser coil good cleaning as beehives are kept on roof. They also store food uncovered from previous day. Once September gets here there will be no more frozen coil. Once temp goes up from being opened so much it struggles to recover without freezing coil. Giving customer option of replacing thermostat wit KE2 which will let me set defrost in box. It will still struggle though due to door being opened 30 times an hour which is why they hate the curtains.

What is the purpose of the suction line tank, is it an accumulator? Im used to a liquid line receiver on a walk in cooler but not on the suction side. Could you explain the purpose of that. Thanks in advance!

If what you your describing is on the suction line before the compressor that's the accumulator, keeps liquid from getting to the compressor washing away the oil.

Thank you for the reply. @ 3:05 in your video it’s center screen. Suction comes in to the condenser goes through a filter into the accumulator(I’m guessing). I guess what confuses me is that I don’t usually see a accumulator on a walk-in , just a liquid receiver. (On heat pumps I understand the accumulator) I guess my question is why is it I rarely see an accumulator on a walk-in cooler condenser.

@@DanO181919 some of it could have to do with it being such a short run from the evaporator to the condenser, when you trying to keep a 8 to 10 degrees superheat at the evaporator and when the condenser is really close it's hard to give the compressor the 20 - 25* superheat that the compressor manufacturer wants. Basically it's just an extra line of protection to keep the compressor from getting slugged with liquid.

Pick up the book "refrigeration for air conditioning technicians"you can find it used on eBay or some downloadable versions of it online. It is straight to the point without all the extra bullshit because they feel as though you already know air conditioning.

Condenser fans are taching different rpm? How about the run caps ok?

They only looked like that on camera, in person they looked normal. Back to your question, even if the fan was going slow or stopped that wouldn't cause the evap coil to freeze.

@@HVACRSurvival Seemed like you were questioning head pressure is all. I still think the rpm of the condenser fans are different,but would it matter if they were? Probably not but maybe.

No.... Your correct 👍👍 There was problems with the head pressure, I didn't record any of that for whatever reason. I washed the coil out three times, twice with coil cleaner and it still was higher than it should of been. That's why I was reluctant to add any more refrigerant and drive the pressure higher.

@@HVACRSurvival I think Chris had a video on one similar to this, he cleaned the coil but the head pressure was still too high. Ended up replacing the condenser fan motors even though they looked to be running normally and that dropped the head pressure down to normal. You could maybe check the fan RPM with one of those laser tachometer things. Sometimes 200-300 RPM faster can make a huge difference.

I had a video earlier this summer like that, I have a rpm tachometer. Generally you only need it for blowers and setting pulleys but maybe I should have checked it. Good idea 4 next time👍👍

Your comment about connecting the bulb to the PLASTIC drain line because of heat transfer from plastic is an insulator and because of the distance to the mounting bulb thickness of the amount of plastic the heat would need to travel will prevent any heat transfer but if you wrap the plastic pipe with a heat tape the heat radiates inward toward the water not along the length of the pipe the only reason it is not common practice is because drain pipes are typically in areas where either the bulb can be snagged on something and ripped off or it could accidentally be installed on a freezer drain line or water could get trapped in the pipe effecting the operation of the cooler due to the bulb sensing the cold water that is flowing in the pipe which could cause thermostat to short cycle causing contacts to stick case and point a contactor that chatters will either burn contacts off or stick contacts together.

I haven't had the chance to try the good aluminum rods yet, I'm working on getting some from a sponsor. We might do a repair if it's out of warranty but not if it's in warranty.

You might be correct? Those units have heaters on the coil but since I did this call back in July and haven't had to go back ever since, I would say we probably got it.

If its at 32-38° why do you need defrost when you can air defrost ?

This defrost clock just shuts off the condenser for the preset amount of time while the evap fans run. It's not a full-blown heated defrost on the coils. Depending on the humidity levels of where you live at you might get away with no defrost clock but around here it's the preferred method. Normally twice per 24 hours is plenty for 60 minutes each time.

As you might have noticed the evaporator is older than the outside unit. Most the places I work at don't spend any more money than they need to. The moral of the story is it used to work fine then one time it froze up for no good reason and I had to figure out why. That's why I was checking all kinds of different things, since we never had to go back for that same problem again I must have been right on the defrost clock.
