Paul Chambers is my most revered and studied jazz double bass player. Being a student of electric and just taking up the double bass a little over a year ago, I have gained a whole new appreciation for what he did with his instrument, in such a brief lifetime. This is definitely inspiring, as I embark upon my life-long journey to better bass playing.

Hey Bob, I hope you check these comments after your stream has ended. I just wanted to express how grateful I am for these videos you commit your time to sharing with us. It is my favorite resource for improving as a bassist since practicing on my own, I often end up wandering somewhat aimlessly and spend a lot of time, not really improving. Your focused sessions really help me improve on concrete, useful techniques and provide a very implementable understanding of core aspects of playing the Bass. Having someone that knows what a real bassist should be for this genre, historically and can communicate it is invaluable. I often feel discouraged towards practicing because I feel that I'm not improving, until I find your videos and am inspired to pick up my bass and play along with your session, because you provide direction! And by the end, (after repeating some parts) I can hear tangible improvement in my ability to sit in as a jazz bassist that other musicians can enjoy playing with. So thank you more than words can say. I feel bad that your videos don't get the most views, as they should. This content is really helpful to any growing bassist that doesn't have the opportunity to take lessons with a master class bassist, as you are filling that gap out of the kindness of your heart and love for the instrument, which really carries through the video and makes me excited to be a part of it. So thanks again.

Question. I’m not sure if we will ever know this but I have always wondered something about Paul chambers and many of the upright players. We all know that jazz is improvised music. Do you think Paul wrote these lines out before he played them? Or is it the type of thing where he was playing this music all the time so it just flowed out subconsciously
@Nikosi9

Wouldn't your note choices be dependent on what the soloist is playing?
@bobdeboo8549
@bobdeboo8549 2 года назад
thanks for watching. absolutely right! ...and the soloist's lines would be correlated to the bass lines we're playing as well. This is more like off-season training in prep for going on the field.

For me there's something special when the bassist is using lots of chromatic approach tones and I'm playing altered dominants and Tritone substitutions not just on Rhythm changes. I mean we're entering this higher echelon of chromatic density especially on some standards.

I really love this Hampton Hawes version with Red Mitchell on bass. Lovely basslines at 1:45. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lpz_PjA071I.html If you could, at some point, take this to soloing on the changes that would be great. I'm not bad at stringing some ok walking lines together but always screw up trying to solo. Even at slower tempos.
