The Garmin map prices are insane! Maps of public areas with access restrictions etc. should be free anyway. Here in Scandinavia I use free online hiking maps on my phone (which can be downloaded and used offline), and you can even import gpx files. I then use my Garmin (Fenix 6 wo/ maps) to follow the path that I planned and only take out my phone if i’m not sure about the path.

Do you use an app? I'm struggling to compare garmins maps vs caltopo maps. If I can find free maps for California that are updated I'd greatly appreciate it!

@@fghtk4009 My free topo map only covers Norway (Topo GPS), so not much help for California. In addition, I use Komoot. This is not free, but costs much less than those Garmin maps, and with main focus on planning hikes or bike rides. I then export the gpx files created by Komoot to Topo GPS and my Garmin watch. Works good enough for me.

I'd strongly recommend Talkytoaster maps I use them with the OS 1:25/50 on the same SD card and alternate between them but once you've used Toasty maps the OS maps look so poor how they pixelate once you zoom into 500 feet or more.

Thoughts on the Garmin GPSMAP 65 vs. the 65S?
@ukgpstraining
@ukgpstraining 2 года назад
If you can afford it I would go for the s version. The electronic compass is the game changer, as it gives you accuracy when you are moving very slow or stopped.

Got the 65s. Like it very much found I need to recalibrate the compass often as I often drive 200 km from the last place I used it. Getting used to Reset it before starting my next hike catches me out sometimes too. Slowly learning. Regards vk5cz ..

We recommend calibrating the compass when you have moved more than 100 mile since last calibration, changed batteries, big change in temperature or been next to something magnetic that may have interfered with the compass, we hope this helps

Bought the 65s and it came today. I need to work out how to get the compass on the map. Its either map or compass currently.

@ukgpstraining
@ukgpstraining 2 месяца назад
Thanks for your question. the units we sell in the UK come pre loaded with European maps (47 countries), and this includes Spain and France so that will have you covered. I hope this helps.

Can I ask, on my GPSMAP 65s, when I load up a route from my laptop, i go to tracks manager or tracks on the handheld menu, because i don't have route on the menu. I find my installed route, enter then the map comes up. However the blue trail on on the map does not show up. Do i need to select anything for the map route to show prior to pressing GO. (when i press go, there is still no blue line of the route i've planned)

It's hard to offer training over RU-vid comments but I can try and help you out - 1. If it is showing in the track menu it is not a route, it is a track. If the route menu is not showing there are no routes on the unit. 2. If you are accessing the track via the track Manager you get an option (before you press 'view map' and go) to 'set colour'. This you can change the colour of your track. The best option would be for you to look at the training videos in our 'online resource'. In this there are x 50 training videos on how to use the Garmin GPSMAP65s - gpsonlinecourse.co.uk/

Hey, many thanks for the reply. I went to Kinder on Sunday, I preinstalled the route from the OS route planner from your website. When I started on Lord's Seat I had quick check on the gps but no blue route displayed on the map. I always use a map anyway, so I just use the Garmin to track my hike and give me a location if i was unsure.

I got the Garmin NiMH Battery Pack with my device, it's battery life is shocking! Going to try the Energizer 2300mh rechargeables to see how long they last. Can't seem to get the Eneloops + Charger anywhere! What batteries do you use?

I show you how to do this on my 'walk and talk' with the Montana 700 - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3kgdMfEnbuU.html - I hope this helps.

I've just bought this and done my first walk near Leyburn in Swaledale. First error was not buying OS mapping. I've bought it now from you. Extra cost but you live and learn! I don't have yhe compass rose showing on yhe map page. I guess that's somewhere in settings so will look for it. Final issue is I need the velcro and lanyard accessory. Not quite sure what to look for on your site. Can you post a link please.?

I've watched more of your videos snd found the backpack tether so have ordered it. I've figured out how to switch on the compass rose on the map screen so that solved too.

Thanks for ordering the backpack tether, we currently have the OS maps discounted (both 1:50k and 1:25k). i hope this helps - gpstraining.co.uk/collections/maps Enjoy your new GPS.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on this and buy one off you next week, will be in touch! (Just got my tempe sensor off you yesterday fantastic service) I keep going to but the 65s and then back out. But I really like the multi band feature which I guess gives better accuracy in forest areas? Also I've read it doesn't give any GPS drift at all. And am I right in saying you can send routes you make on the OS mobile app straight to the 65 without having to plug it into basecamp like my 64s?
@ukgpstraining
@ukgpstraining 2 года назад
Thanks for your comment, sadly you can't wirelessly transfer to the 65s. It has to be the 66s series or Montana 700 series to do this, if you are looking for a multiband GPS with this capability it is the 66sr you should be looking at. In this video I show you how the wireless transfer works - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hwcwcgtFkXY.html

@@ukgpstraining Got to be the 65s for me mate, I just prefer the looks and feel of the 64/5 over the 66. Plus the 66 is abit out of budget. What day do I need to order for Monday delivery as I'm off up Snowdonia tomorrow so won't be here for delivery this weekend

According to garmin product description the device is compatible with Garmin Explore app so should be able to Bluetooth gpx.files to device from a phone or a tablet using the app.

GPS Training are superb . I have used there online help and videos. The official ordnance survey maps are so expensive. The 1 to 50 is not detailed enough and the 1 to 25 is even more expensive. The talky toaster mapping is not expensive and the maps are very good and I would advice GPS users to consider Talky Toaster maps.
