Meet Brian Kennet. He is from the UK and has been living in Singapore for 16 years. With a Philippine wife and 5 kids, Brian is a true lover of Singapore's food scene. While walking across Joo Chiat, he shared with me the best places to eat out in the neighborhood, why he considers Singapore a safe place despite being targeted for his origin, and what a foreigner could face in Singapore when dealing with funerals. Most Americans find it hard to retire comfortably amid economy downtrend. Some have close to nothing going into retirement, my question is, will you pay off mortgage as a near-retiree, or spread money for cashflow, to afford lifestyle after retirement?

as most investing-related questions, the answer is, it depends.. my best suggestion is to consider advisory management
@carssimplified2195
@carssimplified2195 3 месяца назад
Agreed the role of advisors can only be overlooked, but not denied. I remember in early 2020, during covid-outbreak, my portfolio worth around $300k took a slight fall, apparently due to the pandemic crash, at once I consulted an advisor in order to avoid panic-selling. As of today, my account has yielded big fat yields, and leverages on 7-figure, only cos I delegate my excesses right.

Certainly, there are a handful of experts in the field. I've experimented with a few over the past years, but I've stuck with ‘’AILEEN GERTRUDE TIPPY” for about five years now, and her performance has been consistently impressive.She’s quite known in her field, look-her up.

So sorry to hear that Brian's experience of a death/funeral here was negative - I didn't realise our very functional process could be traumatizing for foreigners. And being a non-pub-going S'porean, I'm quite shocked to hear about racist attacks at Chijmes! This shouldn't be condoned in S'pore or hushed down.

Hi Brian -- love your positive outlook in life despite of some tough and difficult times. We each have our own life experiences to bear and learn from, I guess. Totally love seeing you drag Max all over Joo Chiat/ Katong's shops and eating spots. I've lived in the East side of the island all my life, and I'm just 5-10 min away from where you all were in this video. I pass by Joo Chiat every day when I head to work too. Maybe we'll bump into each other one day! hahaha I have worked with many "ang moh" foreigners before in past two jobs. I just wish most of them were like you, who is willing to "get out of the malls", "eat at the hawker centres and local food", and meet us locals at our level in terms of connection and communication.

Sorry to hear about Brian’s experience with the funeral service providers. Most of these companies do not have the experience and skills to deal with foreigner customers especially on the emotional aspects. In such a scenario I would suggest asking a friend who lives here, who had been through the process, for advice.

It’s unfortunate that Brian got a bad experience with his wife’s funeral but that’s not the usual case in Singapore. Funerals here can be an elaborate affair and most of the funeral parlours here especially the bigger and more reputable ones do handle the funerals properly and with respect. They would also assign someone to collect the ashes with you and transfer the ashes to the urn properly. Of course they will have different packages with different prices and services.

Hi Max nice video here. Singaporean here. I used to live near Joo Chiat and it is really an awesome place. There used to be a supermarket called Tay Buan Guan (where ham was something very new to me in 1960s), the Red House (where eating a scoop of ice cream in the 1970s was a luxury), Fitzpatricks (where we get mini hot dogs and canned pineapple for our school events). And there was the prawn noodle at the basement of Dunman Hawker Centre whom i know personally and i think his prawn noodles were the best (he has retired and no longer selling prawn noodles). Also, there is a gentleman selling Zi Char at Lorong 106 (or nearby) who served the best hor fun and that noodle was put in a opeh leaves to keep the food warm - not those nasty plastic containers that we use today. There was People's Emporium at the present day Kinex Building which was not airconditioned during those days. And last but not least, there was Lily Cinema (open air cinema) where you pay 50 cents for entrance fee - and if it rained, you needed to whip out your brollies. Those were the best days. And I miss it.

A misconception of these shop houses that are taller is richer. In the past, many of these shop houses changed hands and new owners were allowed to tear down the existing and rebuilt a one floor higher but in exchange, the front portion of the land has to be moved in 10 meters inward for future road expansion. However, the building conversation act kicks in 1989 to preserve all these shophouses so as to prevent modifications on the original building architecture.

The thing about funerals in Singapore is that its geared towards the legacy of how Chinese funerals were traditionally done; like open casket [your choice but its to just show how well your Loved one looks before the final send off], seeing the coffin actually being burned [in the past cremation was done in the open for all to see so perhaps this practice was a continuation of that, which thank goodness they don't show anymore at the crematorium] n the unceremoniously transferring of the remains, ashes n bones, into the urn Right in front of you, a very nonchalant experience [perhaps to prove the ashes were really placed into the urn, n not sand. 😅 Just my thoughts.

It was the same trauma and disturbing for my European colleague when her husband passed away suddenly in Singapore. They could not understand why the funeral parlour kept asking if they wanted the buffet service and that I t was actually more weird/disturbing for locals to see a loved one to be left alone at parlour vs bringing them home to have the service at home. The bad funeral services experienced are generally due different expectations caused by cultural differences and religion practices. In western countries the body is placed in an open coffin at the funeral home and people visit when they want to say their goodbyes else mainly visit only on actual burial day. In Singapore the dead return home, duration of service rites depend on religion like for Taoist and Buddhism now much shorter at 3 days (in the past up to 7 days). Service rites would take place for all days, friends and family come to say their good byes and are also served some food at the same time (hence the buffet service). On the last day, the coffin leaves in a floral hearse with a “party” playing the last song/prayer for the last march to the incinerator. When you get there, they have a special viewing room to send off their loved one watching the coffin getting pushed into the incinerator. Wait for few hours or maybe some days later to come back and collect ashes and lay to rest at their new “condo” that is a columbarium at a cemetery/temple/church etc.

He never experience more horrific than I. Lucky not to get my head chopped off. That was during the Chinese Malay riot in the sixties when I was in Primary Four in Jervious Primary School one afternoon. I was walking home from school in my yellow shirt and blue short carrying my suitcase school bag when I stopped at a sarabat stall at a traffic junction near Tai Hong Biscuit Factory. Was standing there when I heard of Don't Run and so on. Turning my head to the left I saw a group of twenty carrying parangs and long wooden poles chasing a similar group without weapons and they stopped in front of me where I standing. The group without weapons started grabbing the empty beer bottles on the tables and chairs and started fighting and screaming. I see the parangs,wooden poles started flying and the group using the beer bottles and chairs in retailation.Bloods was flying everywhere. If I stretched my hands I would touch them. The group give up and ran away with the group chasing them yelling don't run until they disappeared.

Brian is very human and relatable and I empathize with him and what he's gone through in life. But, no, hope this channel isn't going to draw in more angmoh crowds here and have Singapore eventually teeming with western espionage jerks! Remember, the US allocates billions to drum up anti-China propaganda around the world. Just because Brian is likeable and isn't one of them doesn't mean everyone else of them isn't or isn't going to be.

on funeral part of Brian's wife, most likely due to family members are flying in from overseas, and also possible due to differences in cultures, practices, and religion. actually, a lot of communications had already been done between the family members and the funeral director/coordinator, way way ahead, even before the body was collected from Blk 9. from the interview in video, at that time, Brian is dis-oriented, resulting in lack of information to be pass on between the family member/funeral directors, which leads to the awful experience. Perhaps Max can interview some funeral directors, and pass on good information to expats/foreigns on what to do in such unexpected events.

Hey look it was a long time ago and to state again it was awful experience of losing someone so close and not knowing the process: that’s what needed improving, the sharing. But it was also major culture shock of what have been used to back home. No blame here - it was just an observation.
