Note to my fellow injured sufferers. I was in the hospital with a metal fixator device attached to my bones and getting ready for an ankle surgery. A sweet elderly volunteer came in to my hospital room with a free newspaper . There was an article on the front page about a local resident who had been in a plane crash. He survived,his lover had not. His legs are now paralyzed among other serious injuries . He said that he can no longer do a million big things but can now do a million small things. Right after I read the article a nurse came in to see if I was O.K.I read her the quote and we both cried. I looked up at her and said,"Guess I'm O.K. after all."

Dear Mihal. I am from Istanbul, Turkey and it has been 1 month since I had the surgery. Today's the day that my doctor told me that I should bear weight on my ankle. It has been a very boring month. So glad to find your video. It really inspired me. I know I had a very long journey a head. Thank you for making this video. And hope that everyone out there will walk again eventually.

Just had cast of after 7 weeks on breaking my ankle and having pins and screws to hold it in place. Day 1 I can walk with out crutches but with a limp and little pain. It's better with shoes with a soft insole but when I walk bear foot or with socks on it hurts too much and feels like I have pressure points on certain parts of my foot, I'm on day three now since cast has been taken off its slowly getting better and I'm driving a manual van with a clutch which I have no problem pressing down, so if your reading this and are worried about getting cast off if your lucky you might just have a little pain and a limp. Hope everyone's recovery goes well..

Thank you for this amazing video. Has already passed two months since I broke the tibia and fibula bones, it was a sad and crazy time for me. So many things happened ever since. I lost my job, got bad grades at school for missing classes and tests.. but, watching this kind of videos brought me so many hope. Now I'm in the last steps. I only wear the boot to go outside. I use crutches to walk, my feet is very soar and feels very weird to walk. But I'm positive that until next week I will be walking without crutches or anything. Thank you for inspiring me to keep positive and happy with myself in a such hard time ♡

ChristinaaMcG As soon as I got the go ahead to start weight bearing (week or so after the cast came off), I was given one of those moon boot type things to partially weight bear with crutches. Eventually was able to put more and more weight on that foot until I didn’t need crutches and I could just walk in the boot. Basically work up to walking with the boot only and then without the boot.

For those that think you can mimic what she is doing better remember her injury may not be like yours. You should always, always make sure you follow your Orthopedic drs advice and if doing PT follow the PTs advice. Doing this on your own could have devastating results for bones that have not healed yet. And if you don't walk properly with crutches you could fall and injur yourself or even your healing ankle.. plus this girl is young and for those of us out there that are old enough to be her mama don't follow her protocol. There was no way I was able to go from a air cast to shoes in no 30 days. And from shoes into walking within a few more days. Of course my injury was one of the worst trimalleolar fracture my dr had ever seen. Plus I had a dislocation and that adds to longer PT time. All I'm saying is just be careful and listen ONLY to your dr.

Thank you for uploading this video, it's helping me with my own personal timeline of recovery. I had ORIF surgery 12/9 for a trimalleour fracture, and after 6 weeks of non weight bearing, I was given the boot! I have been in the boot for about a week, and am slowly transitioning myself to relying on 1 crutch. Started PT today (which btw is a really important part of healing, especially mentally) and am looking forward to being able to walk sans boot and crutches by the end of Feb. Again, thank you so much for documenting your journey. I am also taking some of your yoga tips as well! Going through all of this is rough on the spirit and soul, but know that it does get easier with time and eventually, when you look back at this experience, you will see how tough and badass you are.

Mihal, you are a miraculous inspiration for all of us needing ankle healing. Thank you so much. I'm 72 and had a total ankle replacement (ankle arthroplasty) 10 weeks ago and am just about ready to leave the boot and start in shoes. I also had two titanium screws also inserted from the outside of my ankle to fuse two smaller bones so that I cannot roll my ankle outward. Unless you're a gymnast or yogi, the ankle doesn't need a lot of outward flex and I needed the extra stability. It added 2 weeks to each phase of my healing: 2 weeks in a splint/cast and a total of 8 weeks in the boot, 4 weeks with no weight-bearing and 4 weeks walking on the boot. Two of my ligaments there were torn or partially torn from a lifetime of jumping out of trees as a kid and landing wrong, skateboarding falls, decades of hiking and backpacking, and the last decade of carrying heavy flagstone and boulders for landscape work. It all caught up with me about 6 years ago and I did my best to use Velcro ankle supports and high top boots to nurse my ankle and make it to where I am today. I, too, am a bit nervous about the next phase however the wonderful group of Physical Therapists I see twice a week have shown me that it's all a progression, over time, that will lead to healing and movement again. I don't run so I asked my surgeon what are my limits and he said no jumping off walls or steps and do not lift anything that weighs over 60-70 pounds. No problem. Something I did not see in this video was whether you previously had a shoe riser that brought your healthy foot in the shoe up to level with the boot. "Levelup" and other brands do exactly that. It saves your hips and low back from being pushed out of alignment if you are in a shoe an inch or two lower when walking in the boot. The few times I've walked around the house in the boot and barefoot on the opposite leg let me see how unhappy I'd be if it were not for the shoe riser and matching height to the boot. I could instantly feel the tweak and angle pulling me out of alignment.

Thank you so much for this video, Mihal! I had surgery on a couple torn ligaments in my ankle and microfracture surgery on my damaged cartilage 5 weeks ago. I'm just over 8 weeks post ORIF surgery, with around 4 weeks left until partial weightbearing can start - I had a complex articular pilon fracture, and have plates on both my tibia and fibula. Loved watching this video. The dystrophy in your calf is quite bad, but its so reassuring to see it not stop you. Power to you!

Thank you for posting this video. I am 8 1/2 weeks post ORIF for right bimalleolar ankle fracture, and need to use the CAM boot for about another month. While recovering at my mother's house, I had to support my weight with a walker because it was I felt unsafe using crutches on thick carpet. I am now back at my little cottage with hardwood floors, and tried transitioning to crutches today. Your video serves as something of a benchmark for me. I am probably 25 or more years old than you, and feel pretty good that I looked about the same as you did on your Day 1. Really helps my confidence, and helps me to not feel so discouraged during my recovery. Many thanks - you are an angel for posting this video.

Wow, that's incredible. I'm very happy for you. I had the typicial fracture of the fibula and the medial malleolus and spent 8 days in bed after the ORIF surgery. Now on day 16 is just when I'm starting to move around with crutches. No weight bearing whatsoever. Just thinking about it makes me cringe. I'm off pain killers but nights are still difficult. I kick in my sleep and shock myself awake in pain. I was very active (played inline hockey but ended up breaking my leg and ankle playing baseball, how unlucky is that?). Now, I'd settle for just being able to dance with my wife and run on the beach. They say you don't appreciate things until you lose them but I always appreciated my sports fitness. :( Now I might never even get on skates again or swing a baseball bat or run around the bases or do weighed squats at the gym. I broke my left arm when I was 7. I still have limitations with it. Now I'm 32 and broke very delicate bones. I'll check your blog. I need a pick me up in more ways than one.
@brokenankleclub
@brokenankleclub 9 лет назад
I know how defeated this thing can make you feel. I didn't bear weight for almost 2 months after surgery - it suuuucks. That's way too much time to sit around and think about all of the things you CAN'T do. But if you were active before, it's important to try and stay active now. Check out my yoga videos, there are still definitely things you can do. It's too early to say 'never' already, rehab and yoga and walking (and massage!) can go a long way in getting you back on track. Read through the whole blog (clearly you've got the time for it), I give lots of tricks and ideas along the way. Be patient with yourself!
@triplea007
@triplea007 9 лет назад
Mihal Freinquel thank you, I appreciate the nice words. :) I'm now on week 6-7 after surgery and have been cleared to start physiotherapy. I've been doing a lot of up down ankle exercises these past 3 weeks and have regained about 70% ankle mobility (up down only). Fortunately I've always been very disciplined and always plan for the future, so I figured this was no different. I'll try hard today to get my leg back tomorrow. It's been working so far. :) I read your full blog and watched all your videos. They kept me focused on the nights I couldn't sleep. It's amazing how we think we're alone in our thoughts and then discover how others experienced and felt the exact same things. I finally got a haircut. Never needed one so badly. Hahaha. I'm confident now that I'll make a full recovery. I just will be very careful about the choices I make in the future. Amateur sports aren't worth risking my livelihood over. Accidents do happen, like yours. But when they happen in sports, like my baseball injury, one had it coming. It took me a broken arm, two sprung ankles and a broken toe in soccer, a broken finger in tae kwon do, a dislocated thumb in volleyball, and a broken leg and ankle in baseball to understand that it's just not worth it. Unfortunately people reading this found it too late. :p

And just feeling comfortable to walk and not worrying that your gonna break another bone?

Hello,I,m at the 46 day after ORIF TIB - FIB fracture,or also called a Weber C ankle fracture, I found the best rehab was the walking in the pool and swimming, Start by standing on a scale with your crutches and applying 70lbs of pressure,this gives you an idea how much weight you can put on the broken foot,then get in the pool and put that same weight while in the water..Long story even longer I,m walking without crutches and a boot just 6 days past the 6 week mark,the pool gives you the confidence of not falling and helps get your balance.Thanks for the vid it helped me set goals for recovery.

Thank you for the videos. I feel much better. I was very nervous about walking. I'm 77 and not very strong, so have had to use a wheelchair most of the time. I used a walker that had four legs--no wheels-- to get to places the wheelchair can't access. I have aging joints: a bad knee on that side, and the hopping on my left leg has made my hip hurt. Now, it's 6 weeks and 3 days following the break(s) in my ankle. I'm to slowly, gradually put weight on it with the boot on. It was very hard the first time, but is getting a little easier each day.

Hi Mihal, have found your video inspiring as I have found out that recovery is an individual process and that not everyone isn't experiencing the same thing. I have googled, until I can google no more! I have had ORIF with 2 plates and 11 screws in Feb, and then in non weight bearing cast for 6 weeks. Cast came off April 1st and when seen by the surgeon he simply said " Can you stand for me?". So I did. He then said "Ok, will send you for some PT". That was it! I had no clue what to expect, and how long to wait for a PT session. Had the first one last week, which i found sort of helpful but being impatient I can't stand the fact that this is going to take a while! I am a nurse with a 2 & 3 year old. Need mobility sooo bad! Thanks for posting your video. At the moment the only way I can describe my discomfort is that I need shock absorbers? I am still using 2 crutches, and trying to weight bear as much as I can, but when I elevate my foot the relief is immediate and feels so good. I don't have much swelling now which is the only bonus really. Will look into your ebook :)
@brokenankleclub
@brokenankleclub 9 лет назад
Debbie Slann Oh Debbie, I feel for you. I remember that feeling of needing shock absorbers!! I've never heard any body else describe it like that. Don't worry, the more you walk, the more your body becomes its own shock absorber. I didn't have kids when I broke my ankle, but I have one now, and I CAN'T IMAGINE being non-weight bearing. You're a hero. And don't worry, the PT will help and you'll be on your feet soon. Everything requires way more patience than you ever hoped it would - kind of like being postpartum? I also recommend doing yoga as much as possible (have you seen my videos?) just to help your entire body stay as loose as possible (PT doesn't really focus on that part). That relief from elevation is because you don't have the counter pressure on your foot from weight bearing, so the blood pools when you're vertical - and the pooling un-pools when you elevate. That is also fixed once you start bearing more weight (yay!). Definitely check out the eBook, I think it will be helpful :)

Good video. Your improvement seems astonishing. I had orif surgery on my Calcaneus after head on Motor Vehicle Accident on the highway… Had Surgery 7 months later? Surgery was very unsuccessful… it’s been over 5 years. Foot hasn’t healed. Cant walk on it. I’m at 4 or 5 surgeries that don’t help. Permanent non-mending Calcaneus, damaged rear heal ligament, 2 hernias, PTSD, memory loss, unable to drive….. less than 2% Chance of surviving with speed of guilty driver. Life sucks now. Hope more on this chat have better success

Just this past Thursday, my surgeon just told me to that I can put some pressure on my foot. It is tough, but I am starting to feel that my ankle is healing.

Been looking at this video periodically as I am recovering from ORIF as well, and I always was going through the comments finding out about how long it took other people to get to certain stages of recovery too, so I thought I would add mine in as well. I broke my fibula pretty bad and had severe damage to my ankle area. I broke it April 23rd, ORIF surgery on April 28th, and it is now July 3rd. The toughest days for me was the entire first month as the pain was just constant battle against me (and my mobility). I spent 8 weeks not being able to walk (4 weeks with soft cast, 4 weeks with removable boot) and am now currently walking with the boot on as of June 20th. It takes a lot of patience and mental strength to get through the first 8 weeks, but it gets a lot easier after you get to your follow up appointment. I know you guys are looking at the shower bag that goes over your leg with anger, but that becomes a thing of a past very soon. Following this videos recovery time lapse, I have appeared to have healed a lot faster. I can walk normally boot on as of now. In total, it took 3 days to walk normally with a boot after I was cleared to weight bear. Remember to do your PT that you are provided after you get your boot, it was my saving grace to be walking again this fast. Hoping to be cleared to walk without a boot here in about 10 days. Good luck to anyone else going through this!
