I walk Brooklyn's 13th Avenue in the neighborhood of Borough Park. This street is the commercial center for the local Hasidic Jewish Community in the area. It is lined with various businesses for religious items, clothing stores, toy stores, kosher grocery stores, and bakeries.

Hebrew is a transliterated language. The Ch in Challah or Chanukah starts with the hebrew letter Chet. So the C is not silent and it has a guttural sound from the back of you throat, although some spell Hanukkah in English without a C, the chet sound is still pronounced (As opposed to the letter Hey, which does not have the Ch sound, rather just an H sound, as in Hay).

Osh kosh b'gosh is a very old kids children's clothing brand. It has been around for years--their overalls were always very popular--and can be found all over, especially in major department stores. It is not a specifically "Orthodox Jewish" brand.
@skontheroad2666
@skontheroad2666 3 года назад
@@MGW1974 Sorry, I may have misunderstood what you wrote, but it is easy to write it out--CH--lol! It is just not pronounces like the CH in cherry. There are a few words however, where you can get away with saying Hanukkah as it is spelled. And "Holly" bread was a very common thing to say back in the 50' and 60' (when Jews were assimilating) and many older New Yorkers (from LI, for example) don't necessarily still say it, but easily recognize it. It brings one back to a certain time...

No one "escapes" from Hasidic community. This is not a locked down compound. Few people leave the community but many that have , return to the community after living in secular society . Be leery of documentaries that focus on a few people that leave, for the media has an anti religious bias , and uses a few people that leave as a condemnation of the entire community. Glad to see no empty storefronts like some other parts of the city. So many family owned businesses. I imagine many have been there for years and years

My family and I lived in Boro Park (correct spelling) from 1963 to 1966. We are Jewish but not Orthodox. Thank you for showing me how much the neighborhood has changed since I lived there. Very interesting!

My father also grew up in a Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn in the 50s when there were barely any Hasidic Jews there. He said most Jews would stare at the Hasidic Jews walking down the street because back then it was such an odd sight.

WOW, never seen streets like this. It was interesting to see how folks live in your city. My state has barely 2 million people total. So very different.

Great job. Oh Nuts is a speciality nut and nut based candy store, for next time you're there. Also the Ch in challah, Menachem, etc is the hard 'kh' clearing your throat sound :) Appreciated how you paid attention to the small things like Kemach Yoshon.

Thank you so much for sharing this video. I live in "Almost Heaven WV" a very beautiful but very rural state. I have never been to a big city like NYC. We don't have any Hasidic Jewish communities here either. I find it so interesting how different cultures/religions manage to adapt & live in big cities like NYC.. without losing touch with their own culture, language, & religion. I have never seen or met a Hasidic Jewish person before but I feel like I could be friends with them. They seem to be very family oriented, hardworking, religious people. I'm definitely fascinated by how many different stores & shops they have clustered together on only a couple of avenues. I wished we had that many local shops & stores to choose from unfortunately, we only have a few. Most of our shopping has to be done online. Even though I highly that I would survive very long living in a big city, it does have some cool perks about it.

The first thing I noticed (the first few minutes), was how incredibly clean and shiny the train looked. The 55th station was also very clean. That makes me smile. I love clean streets, trains, cabs etc etc.

I’m originally from the Bronx and worked in the City. I have lived in Elizabeth, NJ, in a Hasidic neighborhood. As a matter of fact, I owned a home right across the synagogue. The streets were spotless. I’m surprised that this is not what I’m seeing here. Shameful and sad. All in all, thank you for your great videos.
