Located on eastern part of Guizhou Province, Zhenyuan has long been an ancient town of the Miao people.
Time-honored history endows Zhenyuan Ancient Town with many rich and generous cultural relics, making it much like a historic garden.
The town covers only an area of 3.1 square kilometers (about 1.2 square miles) but greets you with more than 160 scenic spots including caves, palaces, pavilions, temples and rivers with their unique architecture, exquisite engravings and marvelous natural landscape.
Among them are the famous Wuyang River Scenic Area and elegant ancient complex in the the Black Dragon Cave (Qinglong Cave) - beckoning sights not to be missed by any visitor to eastern Guizhou.
Located at the edge of Yunnan-Guizhou plateau, Zhenyuan is sheltered by the mountains. Zhenyuan Ancient Town is a land-and-water transportation center since early times.
In 202 BC, the town became a county instituted by Han Gaozu, Emperor Liu Bang, and then in 1956 - the capital of southeast Guizhou Autonomous Prefecture.
Cut through by the Wuyang River, Zhenyuan Ancient Town is divided into two parts: south 'Wei City' and north 'Fu City', which forms a water town. Hence it is well-reputed as the 'Oriental Venice'.
As an historic cultural city, Zhenyuan is rich in tourist resources. With sub-tropical humid climate, annual temperature in Zhenyuan averages 16.4 degree with four distinct seasons. It is therefore an ideal tourist destination all year round.
The Dragon Boat Festival, held on May 25th of every year, is the most ceremonious celebration in Zhenyuan.
Thousand-year-old Zhenyuan Ancient Town is located in the east of Guizhou, known as the gateway of Hunan-Guizhou where rail roads pass by the county.
There are a large number of historical architectures, traditional folk houses and ancient wharfs along the emerald Wuyang River such as Qinglong Cave, Shipping Mountain and Tiexi Scenic Area, etc., which attracts countless Chinese and foreign tourists every year. With more than 20 minorities living harmony at Zhenyuan Ancient Town, it is also being praised as the “World Cultural Protection Circle”.

Zhenyuan Ancient Town is a famous “Mountain Cliff Architectures Museum” in China. Ancient lanes and paths wind in the city, stone bridges and city walls strewn at random, plus emerald river and multifarious mist surrounding the city, making visitors can’t help but think of the scenery in the poem.
Besides the accomplishment in architecture, Zhenyuan Ancient Town is a diversified fusion of the Han, the Dong and more than 20 ethnic minorities.
The integration of Central Plain Culture, Jing-Chu Culture, Ba-Shu Culture, Wu-Yue Culture, Min-Yue Culture, Indigenous Culture and more other cultures has made Zhenyuan a multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-social museum, praised by experts as the "World Cultural Protection Circle".
The ornamental value and the scientific value in Zhenyuan Ancient Town are both high. There is not only a famous and magnificent Qinglong Cave Architecture complex, but also more than 160 ancient folk houses, lanes, wharfs from the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty with their old looks unchanged.
Zhenyuan Ancient Town is a "traditional culture maze" which is completely integrated by places of interest and historical sites.
Architectural style there are blue bricks tiles with high fire walls, angled cornices with carved beams and painted rafters.
Every piece of blue slate and brick records the historical relics and tells the vicissitudes of the ancient town for thousands of years. There are military fortresses such as temple of war, city wall, beacon tower, fort totten, etc. in the ancient city wall.
