I walk through the neighborhood of St. George, Staten Island. This is the northernmost point of Staten Island, and the closest point on the borough to Manhattan. It is home to the Richmond County Courthouse, Staten Island Ferry, and Staten Island Borough Hall.

Interesting Fact , many actors in the 50s and 60s lived in those apartments you passed (Paul Newman and Martin Sheen for instance) because it was cheaper then Manhattan and its proximity to the Ferry.

Great video, thanks for showing it around. That CSI is an extension of the main campus more centrally located. There are some beautiful older homes in the historic district along St Marks. The SI Museum moved to Snug Harbor, which is a vast complex with historical homes dating back to Naval housing . (Also from Lady Gaga's Marry The Night music video). Victory Blvd was named after the victory from WWI. Check out Fort Wadsworth and the paths to South Beach for your next visit!

Thanks for sharing this. Staten Island is a wonderful place. I love it here. The official name is the borough of parks. Unofficially, we’re the forgotten borough. Unfortunately, these court houses never helped me. But I still love it here. And yes, the buildings are beautiful.

It's hard to imagine that Borough Hall is actually located in this part of Staten Island and yet the area around it is clearly in need of basic, low-level initiative to spruce it up. Borough President James Oddo, have some Staten Island pride and tidy up the place a little bit. You come and go here for days, weeks and months and you can see the need? Especially when it's the first place visitors encounter when they get off the ferry. It should be more inviting and a showcase for the borough.

In1976 I moved with my mom from East Harlem to Staten Island of all places. Back then(not sure now) it was very VERY prejudiced. I wanted to go to Curtis High school which was right by the Ferry but they started busing black students like myself to New Dorp high school which is of course in the New Dorp area where blacks and Puerto Rican’s were not welcome. Needless to say it Wasn’t a great experience and transferred out a year later and went to a High school in Manhattan where I was more comfortable . We moved to Far Rockaway Queens 2 years later I think it’s more diverse now and more people are moving there..looks strange seeing it now I hardly recognize anything except the older buildings. They actually have a mall...awesome. Thanks for stirring up my teenage memories❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ wow Bay Street victory blvd...I remember🙃 You’re hitting my old spots I just saw your East Harlem clip...

This is a cool watch. I lived just up the block from 1977 to 1982. Didn't like living there at the time, but nice to look back and see the place. Had a bit of a crush on a girl that worked in that deli/store on the corner by the way lol. It looks like the area has improved since I lived there. I remember around 1981 coming out of McKee high school, which was in your video (around the area where you dropped your phone), and saw that there was a dead kid under a tarp across the street at the playground. On another day, in our apartment building, a downstairs neighbor threw his girlfriend's baby out the window and then stabbed the woman a few dozen times, before he himself jumped out the window. Saw and heard most of it going on because I was home sick from school that day. On the positive side, I remember spending a lot of time looking out my bedroom window, onto the Hudson River watching ships go by, and gazing at the Statue of Liberty and the Manhatten skyline. I was in my early teens but every time I looked out at NYC in the distance, I was so amazed and thankful that I was actually there seeing with my very own eyes the place that just a few years before was more like a myth back at my native country. From playing in the streets of a small city in Hungary, to actually seeing and being part of the greatest city in the world. Really felt like a miracle at that time.

Your walk hit every one of the ugliest, downtrodden streets in St. George with every cheap store and restuarant in the area, ending up not in St. George, but in the commercial drag of Tompkinsville where Eric Garner was murdered by the police. The elegant residential section, the largest part of St. George is a NYC Landmarks district with superb 19th Century architecture, a large campus of a noble high school, beautiful churches, a professional baseball field, waterfront parks and thoroughfares, and all with spectacular views of NY Harbor. You did a great disservice to St. George in this video.
@ItsJustAriell

How did he do a disservice? He showed a part of st George. Weather you believe the streets and businesses were ugly or now. It is a part of the island. You sound stupid.
@danfannon1707
@danfannon1707 2 года назад
@@ItsJustAriell Yes, he showed a part of St. George, but but ONLY one part. In not including the beautiful parts with the commercial sections, he left the impression that that is all there is to the North Shore of Staten Island to people on RU-vid who have no idea of the place. Now, when they think of St George, all they will know is what ActionKid showed them, not the work of generations of people who worked hard to make St. George a lovely residential place with the most diverse population of any place in NYC. What AK did is called poor video journalism. As to my being stupid, you may be right, but at least my first name isn't Shala which is the obvious diminutive form for Shallow.

@@danfannon1707 I'm a little confused by your comment because as far as commercial space goes, this is about what I expect from St. George that he showed coming from a native Staten Islander. Are you referring to the Empire Outlets? Because that's not representative of Staten Island at all. To me, EO represents the worst aspects of general NYC gentrification. I have yet to meet a single local that wanted this.
@danfannon1707
@danfannon1707 2 года назад
@@dingbat3440 You missed my point. I wasn't saying that AKid missed including the EO as part of the commercial sections of St. George, but rather, that AKid did NOT show ANY of the residential section; the beautiful homes on the hills of the Landmark Historic District, or Curtis High School, or St. Peter's Church, or the waterfront parks that make up TWO-THIRDS of St. George. Showing only the commercial strips which represent only 1/3 of the area (the least attractive section and ending with the mess of stores on Victory Boulevard which is in Tompkinsville, NOT St. George) and ignoring the handsome 2/3 of the area is why he did a disservice. Viewers who have no idea of St. George is or what it looks like will come away from AK's short shrift video thinking that this is all there is to the area.

so this is the neighborhood I'm looking at when I peer across the water from Bay Ridge, right?
@crazeyjoe
@crazeyjoe 2 года назад
From Bay Ridge, you would most likely look to the other side of the Narrows, where the Verrazzano spans. The neighborhoods of Rosenank, Grasmere and South Beach are in that area. St George is northwest of those neighborhoods, closer towards Manhattan.

@@crazeyjoe I should have been more specific. I live just a few minutes from the 69th Street pier, and not the Verrazano. I think St. George is what I'm looking at from this part of Bay Ridge :D

@@victorha9923 Yes, around Bay Ridge Ave looking across would be the Tompkinsville/St George area.

I grew up Mid Island. Thw Northshore def took time to get adjusted to for me. I enjoy it now, but in all fairness this side of the island can be pretty depressing and scary at times. High crime rate, lots of hate for cops, etc. Much different frim the Southshore/Mid Island. Its slowly improving, but as a white lady, I feel alot of hate thrown my way at times. Last month I was called a white bitch and was threatened physical harm because I (very politely) asked an AA woman to let me pass in an isle in a deli. On the bus I hear daily talk about how evil white people are. Etc. That sucks, but what can you do? That dusgusting welfare office plays CNN all day. Its no wonder people are brainwashed. What a world. Anyway, I hope St. George continues to improve both socially and economicaly. We all need to find pride in our communities, and take personal responsibility for our livlihood! God bless!

You sound like you've got an axe to grind with people who don't look like you. Don't put yourself and "your kind" above others because of how they look and where they come from and you'll find that everything will work out okay. Peace!!

The downtown north shore was experiencing a renaissance for the last 10 years with so much hope for the future. But thanks to our a-hole mayor , between the homeless shelter that is coming and the hand cuffing of the police - all of the neighborhood vermin is now walking around pounding their chests and going back to their animalistic ways ! As a building owner , I am so frustrated ! A real shame !!

What are those kind of French flags on official buildings ?
@edwardp3502

City of New York flag. Colors (white, blue, orange) are from when the area was New Netherlands. Both the NY Mets and the Staten Island Ferry use the orange-blue combo for the same reason.

Victory Blvd. is NOT St. George! It is Tompkinsville. Please check your facts. St. George originally was named for the civic center. Real estate spiel pushed New Brighton into St. George, as well as Tompkinsville. Tompkinsville was named for Gov. Daniel Tompkins of New York.

I thought he mentioned that was the borderline between St. George and Tompkinsville. I tend to give AK a break. At least he is willing to show our borough.
