This is the second video in my series “Walks in Dorset” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode I visit the pretty village of Cerne Abbas & even smaller hamlet of Up Cerne.
Starting off in Cerne Abbas, I explore the magical St Augustine,s Well in the churchyard before heading North to explore the wonders of the Cerne Abbas Giant (a huge figure carved in to the side of the chalk hills). Continuing North, I enjoy some stunning views of the valley before heading down into Minterne Parva Farm & then on to Up Cerne where there is an impressive Manor House, Church & beautiful lake.
My 4 mile circular journey ends back at Cerne Abbas with some superb views of the “Giant” on the opposite side of the valley.
Shortly after the start of the video, I have included a 2 minute long clip of photographs & short commentary giving a little bit of history about Cerne Abbas.

UPDATE (May 2021)
Archaeologists believe an ancient naked figure sculpted into a chalk hillside was created during the late Saxon period.
Soil samples from the Cerne Abbas Giant were analysed by scientists over 12 months to reveal the landmark's age.
The research also sparked a new theory that the Dorset giant was forgotten for generations after it was first sculpted and then later rediscovered.
Geoarchaeologist Mike Allen said the age result was "not what was expected".
He said: "Everyone was wrong and that makes these results even more exciting."
Soil samples from the giant's elbows and feet were extracted in March 2020 but the results were delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In July, scientists said microscopic snails revealed the giant was unlikely to be prehistoric.
"Many archaeologists and historians thought he was prehistoric or post-medieval, but not medieval," said Mr Allen.
Scientists studied soil samples by using technology to show when individual grains of sand in the sediment were last exposed to sunlight.
Researchers said material taken from the deepest layer yielded a date range of AD700 to 1100, which suggested the giant was first made by late Saxons.
The Anglo-Saxon period lasted for 600 years, from 410 to 1066, before the middle ages.
But other samples suggested the giant was made at later dates of up to 1560, which left the archaeologists with a conundrum, due to the earliest documented record of the giant featuring in a church warden's account of repairing it in 1694.
National Trust senior archaeologist Martin Papworth said the science suggested the giant "could be medieval" but added surviving documents from Cerne Abbey, founded in AD987, "don't mention the giant".
"In the 16th Century it's as if the giant's not there, and John Norden's survey of 1617 makes no mention of him," he added.
Mr Papworth's theory is that the giant may have been created in the late Saxon period, but then for some unknown reason was neglected for several hundred years and grassed over, before being rediscovered.
"That would explain why he doesn't appear in the abbey records or in Tudor surveys," he said.

Thank you Dave, another great walk, fantastic scenery & information. Cerne Abbas has a connection to me as my 3xG Grandfather Samuel Hooper died at the Poor Union there in June 1860 from Paralysis (Stroke). He was a Sawyer by trade and a bit of a character, lived at Pulham from the 1830s, but had moved about from Puckington & Yeovil in Som, through Castleton, Sherborne, Buckland Newton & Wooton Glanville.

Delightful, gentle video, thank you. I lived in Cerne Abbas in the 1960’s as a little boy and loved it so much. Your walk brought back many memories for me of a happy, idyllic time when the world was a slower, kinder place than it is now. God bless you.

Hi Dave, Just back from the Cerne Abbas walk. It was a lovely day for it although a bit muddy underfoot at times. We did a very similar walk last year walking as far as Minterne Magna but was happy to do a slightly shorter walk today as I’m waiting for a knee replacement. Tess (our Springer spaniel) loved the walk as most of it was off the lead with plenty pheasants to chase. Returning to Cerne Abbas we popped in the village shop as we were a bit late for the pub. What an array of local beers! I just had to bring a few home. Currently sipping Watercress Warrior from the Cerne Abbas brewery - the shop told me it was their best seller. So if anyone is doing this walk, don’t miss the local shop for cheese, beer and anything else you could ask for. Thanks again for the inspiration Dave. John, Sally and Tess.

Glad you had a great walk. It is a challenge avoiding mud at the moment! I will have to make a visit to that village shop - purely for research purposes only!

Very nice Dave. I'm enjoying these from Vancouver Is. Canada where we too have some impressive scenery, albeit quite different from Sussex/Hampshire. The fields and hills are superb but I also very much enjoy the visits to the village churches. Please give Logan a pat for me.

Very well done. I got a nice intimate feel for the area. I did find the camera shadow slightly distracting but that was minimal. Thanks.

Thanks Robert. Yes, there is always that fine line between having the sun in front of the camera but also keeping the shadow of the microphone /camera out! My camera doesn't have a front screen which doesn't help either! Hopefully I have gained a little more experience over time & am much more aware of the issue now. Thank you for watching.

I don’t believe I’ve ever been to Cerne Abbas. What a picturesque village it is and so much history. We will make it our destination one day in the summer. Lovely views from that hill as well. I’ve seen many pictures of the Cerne Giant and the only story I know about it is.. ..... If a married woman was having problems conceiving a child, she would have to go to the giant and sit on a certain part of his anatomy. This was supposed to help. You probably knew that.

Thank you for the history lesson. I really enjoyed walking with you and your beautiful Whippet Logan. Will look for more of your videos. I know ancient Scotland inside and out but not England as well as I intend to know it. I know the ancient English monarchs really well but not the countryside. Elizabeth I is my favorite along with Harold II Godwinson. And of course there is King Alfred. Do you have any favorite history books on England? Also, do you know any families by the name of Isles, Ruthven/Ruffin, or Quertermous? I am American with British ancestors. Can I answer any questions you may have about our beautiful country? I grew up in Southern California along the ocean near Malibu and Santa Monica but moved to Idaho 1 1/2 yrs ago. I've done a lot of traveling in the states and in Western Europe including the British Isles. Best wishes.😊

Thank you Sandra. I d not know any families that you have mentioned. I often refer to books written by Arthur Mee in his "The King's England" series (especially the one on Dorset) published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1939 (reprinted 1951). I hope that you get to enjoy future videos on the channel. Thanks for watching.
