In this episode of my series “Walks in Dorset”, I take a 4.5 mile circular walk from Piddlehinton which is located about 5 miles North of Dorchester. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I parked my car at The Thimble Inn (also my final destination) in Piddlehinton & started off with a wander through the village. Shortly after the pub, I took a minor detour to the West, crossing over the River Piddle, passing by the Millennium Green and then headed South again back into the village.
Re-crossing the River Piddle, I made a visit to the Church of St Mary and then picked up a footpath heading South (to the West of the river) towards Little Puddle Farm.
I took the opportunity of viewing the remains of the deserted medieval village of Little Piddle - basically just earth banks in a couple of fields - and then picked up a bridleway heading West towards Little Puddle Hill.
At Little Puddle Down, I changed direction & headed North down through Holcombe Bottom and, after crossing a minor road, up to Coombe Bottom.
I finally joined up with an old drovers track - Lackington Drove - and followed it until I reached the small hamlet of White Lackington.
After a quick look around the hamlet, I continued South on a footpath by the side of fields, re-crossing the River Piddle, and returned to Piddehinton.
My walk ended with beer & soup at The Thimble Inn.

Afternoon Dave and Logan . It looked like a lovely day for a wonderful walk in Dorset. These little villages are so beautiful Dave. It is amazing how they have kept them looking so good. Time changes things I know but I am glad it did not changes them too much. Such pretty homes and churches, and scenery.Thank you Dave and Logan. 👏🏻☀️

Thank you for posting these videos, Dave. I recently (Feb '24) finished the St James Way on foot from Reading to Southampton (and onward to Santiago de Compostela, Spain). Your videos around Mortimer and the Itchen Navigation were super-helpful. St Mary's church at Itchen Stoke is quite the sight!

Well done on completing the St James Way, Chris (I see that the UK section alone from Reading to Southampton is 66 miles?). Thanks for watching.

A wet underfoot in places but wonderfully sunny walk! I think you mentioned Honey Puddle as one of the alternative names for the village - that gets my vote! Some lovely green lanes as well along the way. Quite a big church for the village. I think Logan definitely prefers Pipers crisps to the dog treats!!
@DaveFord
@DaveFord 3 месяца назад
Oh yes, Pipers are his favourite (although he only has a few as they are not really that good for dogs!).

Hello Dave. I must say, Piddle Hinton has some very attractive cottages and the whole area is picturesque. Somewhere around that area is Piddle Trentide, but I've never visited any of them. Very nice video. Good quality and definition.

Thoroughly enjoyed this, Dave. Well researched as always, and lots to interest. It does make me wonder just how much of our history has, even in recent years, been either ploughed over or worse, built on. I'm lookin gforward to visiting the Piddle valley with Jackie later this year.

Lovely walk in a part of Wiltshire I’m not familiar with even though some paternal ancestors farmed in and around there in the 1600 and 1700 hundreds. Thatch cottages might look lovely but they do cost a lot to re thatch.

@@charlesfulcrum3170 yes you are correct. I do genealogy and carry a huge number of ancestors in my head. A large chunk of whom lived right across Wessex. Thanks for pointing this out to me.

I think that we were so engrossed in the walk that we forgot about that! Logan did get a bit of "chasing the ball" near the end. "Zoomies" will be back in next week's video!
