The two most common types of insulation for retrofitting the walls of existing homes are dense pack cellulose and water based injection foam. Having installed injection foam for two different companies when I was getting started in 2008 and seeing its deficiencies first hand, Insulwise opted to go with dense pack cellulose. The main reasons are that it NEVER shrinks or settles, perfectly fills the stud cavities, does an excellent job of air sealing, is virtually flame and mold proof, is a non-toxic sustainable material, and is typically far less expensive. This video gives good insights to these two materials, and shows how injection foam can look once it has been installed. Not good!

I bought a 1904 house and renovated it. When doing the electrical I found someone did this in the walls at some point. I replaced all the windows and filled the Attic to R50. My utilities during Canadian winter are nearly half of my friends homes that were built in the 50s to 80s. My highest bill this winter was $251, 1300sq ft plus heating a 600sq ft garage. One friend for example, with a 1950s home (new windows, original insulation) was paying $400/mth, 900sq ft, no garage to heat.

Hi there, do you mean that the walls were done with injection foam or dense pack cellulose?

@@insulwiseenergycomfortsolu3293 Cellulose. Found the walls were packed when running all new wiring. And when doing the windows, found 2 layers of 3/4-1" shiplap and then new aluminum siding over that. This place is built like a tank.

I am interested to hire you and your company. My only question is this a fire hazard?

Thank you! If you live in the Pittsburgh area give us a call! In terms of cellulose insulation being a fire hazard, the opposite is the case. Because it is treated with boric acid it cannot catch fire. If you do other searches on youtube you'll find where people hit this stuff with a blow torch and all that it will do is smolder. It will actually reduce fire risk in a home, because it will eliminate the ability for flames to use exterior wall stud bays to envelop a home. It will increase the safeness of the home fairly dramatically in that sense. Andy

@@insulwiseenergycomfortsolu3293 I been following awhile and watching most the videos in your channel. I would love to have you take a look at our home but I don't know if you could come to our home as we don't live close to there. What is your number?
