Walmart Motile M141/M142 Upgrades (RAM, SSD, Wireless Card)

In my Motile M141/M142 intro video I mentioned how upgradeable this laptop is, and now I'll show you just how easy it is! In this video I'll show you how to upgrade the RAM/memory, add an additional NVMe SSD, and upgrade the wireless card.
Unfortunately, there isn't a second RAM slot to run a dual-channel configuration. I've checked both sides of the mobo myself and the existing socket doesn't have provisions (no locking tabs or slot) to put a second stick in the opposite direction covering the M.2 SATA side despite what others have thought. Here's a pic of the opposite side of the RAM socket: i.imgur.com/C1...
Also, you can absolutely put a different amount of RAM (like if you only want to bump up to 8GB), and a larger NVMe SSD (like 1TB) than I did.
For those wondering about the WiFi card performance differences, when transferring GBs of videos between this laptop and one of my wired network computers the stock Intel 3168ngw only gives me about 25MB/s, while the AX200 does 70MB/s on my home AC network.

it's 2024 and i want to say that i have watched your videos multipue times. Ive Replacet all the screws, replsced a stripped screw. New MDR4 32x single ram and a New 2 Tb. am thinking about replacing the og hard drive with another 2 TB HD! soon

This is right after they were throwing "OVERCLOCKED" computers or whatever the name was using absolute TRASH Chinese parts so they made these Motile to get grace back. $250 laptops and I am typing on one right now and the entire thing is NICE! Huge trackpad, good screen, 4GB RAM. This is my mothers laptop. Got it for her. I am keeping it running fast. Windows is absolutely NOT slow BUT bloatware LOVES windows so no matter what, you will get a LOT of bloat. Apple is getting a LOT of bloat in the background. Apple pays a LOT of money to keep that under the rug. The computers are THOUSANDS of dollars for a piece of trash that a netbook could do but they DO spend a LOT for motherboards (logicboards) that will last decades up to the past few years when they put a CPU on and no cooling so it will De-solder so you bring it to the Apple store and pay enough for a new one when in reality they take the old bad motherboard, resolder it, and sell them for a small amount less as a "Refurbished" mac or macbook. A fan the size of a dollar coin trying to cool a "Core i9" is money for Apple and makes me mad. haha sorry. Walmarts CURRENT Motile is $650 min and better but not simple and nice like this old one from the year. Walmart is no longer the "Dark Horse". Remember they were selling "Macbooks" for a year or two. They are a trash company now. The $250 were a breath of fresh air to then be a fart

I just finished these upgrades to the M141, and I am pleased with the results, especailly since I caught the Walmart price pendulum at $199 for this model. The parts arrived on different days so I did it in stages, which was interesting: The wifi upgrade was well worth it as predicted. The 16 GB RAM upgrade (from 4 GB) was actually a bit disappointing at first (maybe because of the single-channel?) compared to RAM upgrades I've done on Intel machines. But it paid off with the final stage, adding a 1 TB NVMe, then cloning the original to it and making it the boot drive. Whoa. NVMe is awesome! I spent about $400 total, and the laptop performs like it cost 3 times that. This will be my son's "off to college" gift -- and if he's shamed by the off-brand label on the lid he can put a sticker over it :^), or just brag to friends about the upgrades. Thanks, FaRKle0079!

@@FaRKle0079 Does the first m2 slot only support sata? I bought a new nvme ssd and cloned it, removed the stock ssd and couldnt get it to boot when the nvme was in the original ssd's place. Moving it to the second slot allowed everything to work great, but was curious why it won't work in the OG spot.

@@agustinlopez6595 There was only a day or 2 when I was using the RAM upgrade before the NVMe drive arrived and I added it. But my impression, in that limited time, was that I expected better from 4 x the RAM. I would say, if you're getting 16 GB RAM, also get some kind of NVMe to go in the open slot, and make it the boot drive using free cloning software like Macrium Reflect. The 1 TB WD drive was probably overkill, when you can get 500GB for a reasonable price.

Good video. This laptop doesn't need an upgraded wireless card because the stock one works great anywhere. The RAM is a smart upgrade and so is the SSD addition. THis is the best laptop ever.

i disagree. My dell 17 2n1 can be upgraded, support for 32 gig of ram, m.2 nvme ( which i upgraded to a WD black) as well as regular sata 3, you could replace the wifi card if you wanted, which at some point i think i will get a wifi 6 ax card at some point. when it comes to upgrades though, in reality a desktop has a lot more room to expand depending on what board it has as well as easier cpu, and cooling upgrades and most support graphic card upgrades. I wouldnt call it that major vendors have more limits as most can be upgraded, it just depends on what kind of board is installed and how much it supports. we can use hp for example, they could sell a cheap laptop and the board that is used is mostly maxed on being upgraded, the board might support 4 gig of ram and that is whats installed, the board might lack a m.2 slot. so no m.2 ssd support. however it wouldnt stop you from at least using a sata 3 ssd which would add much more performance, they could still support a upgraded wifi card. now im sure you could upgrade the cpu in a laptop its just finding what cpu will work with that board, and if the next cpu would be that much of a upgrade since you cant get to wild with it depending on its cooling capability which would be a limit in all laptops.

@Cameron Brown I guess I didn't really clarify, I was referring to lower end laptop models although I do feel there has been a push over the last 5 or 6 years to give less flexibility on upgrading all around even on pricier units. I also meant models you see out in the stores that vendors are really pushing. You could of course find something with more flexible specs but I don't think Joe Schmo consumer is doing that much these days and think that is being capitalized upon. Nothing wrong with a free market but unless someone gets a hold of an "outdated" unit and put's a linux distro on it then it's likely to end up in a landfill once it starts slowing down.

@@DOYLECLEVERLOBE1 ya, I used my dell as an example. Which does support more upgrading. However I agree lower end have less upgrade potential normally but is increasingly becoming normal to be able to upgrade some. I still have a compac hp from 09 that works fine but is a base celeron, and supports 4 GB ram but sold with 2, if I wanted to invest it could probably have a better spec wifi card and could run a ssd in it however its sata port speed is limited and could expand to run two ssd's or ssd and mechanical if I removed the optical drive. I have a dell inspiron 15 from 2012 that did sell with low end hardware but upgraded to 8 gig of ram max, it is claimed it could run 16 but no proof of it, installed a dual band with bluetooth, and went with a wd ssd which it supports sata3, and installed a dell extend battery. Those upgrades were not expensive. It was a close out sell and marked down lower even with low spec. So really it was over priced from the start. But it has a i3HT which helps. Now it has about a 10 second boot time and runs great except for games of course. My 17 inch plays some games on med to low resolution. However it can be said it depends on model and make which would decide what can be done. As said some are sold with low end boards and can't hand much more than what they were priced and built for. But it's nice that lower end is being able to be upgraded more. But as you said a regular Joe really doesn't care and once it slows down they either over pay on a repair they could have done which a simple upgrade or even just a ssd upgrade will being new life to it. But otherwise they will just pitch it. I'm surprised hard disks are still a thing since ssd's are cheap now. Besides. Being used for a nas or a server. Which isnt as common. My 17 inch came with a 2tb seagate and was somewhat slow after two days I said screw this and slapped a ssd in it. World of difference. But that's my experience with it. I also have a desktop with a build from 07 running windows 10 with 2 gig ram and ssd and intel d duel duel core and dedicated graphics. It runs ok. It can't do anything extreme. But it's just something to mess with from time to time.

I have the black $200 M141. IT has been working great with Linux onboard. It is running KUbuntu 19.10 right now. Had a problem with latest kernel, but runs fine on an older one. Anyway I upgraded to 16GB of RAM first. Easy peasy. Ran on that for a week or two, and then I ordered a M.2 2280 Crucial NVME 1TB drive which I installed yesterday. I could not get the BIOS to see this drive in the first slot (where the original set). However it works fine in the second slot. So I now have the original slow 128GB as my OS drive, and the 1TB as my 'data' drive. This is a preferred configuration anyway, as I can change OSs without having to lay down any data (development code/pictures/vidoes/etc/) again. I just wanted to pass on my experience which has been good so far! Don't game so no comments there. As far as I am concerned I don't have any complaints.

Just an FYI, the current (as of 3/16/2020) kernel 5.3.0-42-generic works. Kernel 5.3.0-40-generic was the one that didn't boot properly. Point is if you install Ubuntu 19.10 today and 'apt update' to latest it will work just fine now. No fiddling to get to an older kernel :) . Just wanted to pass that along!

@@SneakyTurtle420 The black-yellow-red multiple-line cable on the top of the battery pack, that's the battery cable connected to the mobo; when that's connected, the battery is providing the mobo a very little current, but with a large enough voltage to start the laptop, it's this voltage potential that could fry the mobo when there's a ground connection(or anything that's shortcutting); by disconnecting the battery to the mobo, you remove that voltage potential, therefore there's no voltage potentail across the whole mobo, which even if you have a ground connection that won't cause shortcut

@@JCW65 shut down the laptop, unplug the power cord, open the back side of the laptop (some laptop can directly take out battery, some laptop's battery is hidden underneath back side of the laptop), if the battery is hidden underneath the back side, once open the back side you need to identify the battery and the battery plug (this varies based on your laptop model, if you dont know how usually the laptop battery looks like, you will want to check with oem to make sure you dont destroy your laptop mobo); once open the backside of the laptop, treat everything as delicate as glass, on the mobo there are many tiny resistors and capacitors which can be easily knocked off if not careful

I can answer my own question. Vega doesn’t actually lock down the allocated memory, so it isn’t like Kaveri or other old APUs where it just automatically reserves more system memory proportionally as you add more, then refuses to give it back.

Yup, I believe Picasso dynamically allocates additional system memory as needed. I know on some systems you can change the iGPU reserved amount, but there isn't any setting for that on the Motile's BIOS.

Also curious does it allocate more than 2gb to the graphics if you double the ram? It should show the max allocated in most system monitoring apps. I think it’s max 2gb but not sure.

i recently did the same upgrades on the m142 and all were worth it. My only regret on this thing so far is not cloning the drive before the first boot since they don't provide all of the software for a clean install.

You can export all the drivers for future use very easily using a free tool called DriverBack: sourceforge.net/projects/drvback/ Good luck! Also: it's worth noting that the first M.2 SSD port (the default) is the only one of the two that supports both SATA and NVMe. The second is just NVMe. It's definitely worth cloning the primary drive to an NVMe disk!

My laptop arrived yesterday and I am very satisfied. Obviously the upgrade of the 2nd M2 slot is a slam dunk if you want more on board storage but on the fence as to whether to upgrade the RAM to 16 gb. On the RAM has anyone tried the potential 32 gb that is linked to fully verify it works? If I am going to upgrade would love to do the 32 gb for longevity. Thanks for the great vid!

Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but one youtuber said the 2nd ram slot is blocked my the included m.2 ssd. So to use the 2nd ram slot ot get dual channel, you have to remove the m.2 and upgrade to an nvme ssd and use that slot instead. I've only ever heard one youtuber ever mention it.

I think the reason people are complaining about single channel memory is because the AMD Ryzen APUs do benefit from dual channel memory when gaming. And cheap gaming is a big appeal of the Ryzen APUs.

So my M142 came with a 8 GB 2400 Mhz RAM stick. It seems like you installed a 16 GB 2666 Mhz stick. Does it still work? I mean it seems like the CPU only supports up to 2400, so the worse that could happen is the 2666 speed is dialed back to 2400? I'm just curious if I should order a 2400 Mhz 16 GB stick or a 2666 Mhz 16 GB stick.

It comes with GoldKey brand 8GB 2666Mhz already installed, the bios will bring it down to 2400 MHz anyways, grab whichever is cheaper.

This laptop does not have a second RAM slot. You are looking at the back of the socket.

Walmart/Motile's support is lacking, and I've seen stories of others who tried to do clean Windows installs on new SSDs for this platform have trouble getting the required mobo drivers to successfully swap the main boot drive. That said, I'm sure I can clone the original drive to the new SSD and set it as the boot drive, but I'm pretty content with the boot drive as is (and don't really plan on putting much else on it).

@@obeyex3l917 Yes, creating the partition in Disk Management is the same as how I did it in the video. It should automatically fill the "Simple volume size in MB" value the same as the "Maximum disk space in MB" value, but if not, just set it to the max disk space value. I'd pick whichever of the 1TB drives I recommended is cheapest. This laptop only has 2 PCI-E lanes of bandwidth on the M.2 slot, so it can't really max out these drives.

Yes you can make the new drive the boot drive. I'd look to see if you can easily find all of the motile drivers for a clean install, otherwise you'll have to resort to cloning the original drive.

What I would wanna do (or know) is transfer the OS to the NVME drive as well as the other programs for much faster performance and just use the existing SATA drive as storage. That is if I own said laptop...

People have successfully done this, either by cloning the SATA SSD to the NVMe one, or by doing a fresh install on the NVMe one. I believe all the drivers for a fresh install are on Motile's customer support site now, but you may want to double check.

@@FaRKle0079 on that note, what kind of performance difference have you seen with the new chip? Debating upgrading the ram and I figure if I'm taking the time to do that I may as well upgrade the wifi chip at the same time if there is a significant gain in bandwidth to be had.

The most frustrating thing is the mousepad's lack of smoothness when trying to trim clips/place items in video editors. It can do video editing, but I'm not sure I'd count on this as my primary editing machine (I only use it for light editing when I'm on vacation, otherwise I use my desktop).

@@Voltron00x The wires with connectors should just pop onto the connections on the card. Do they still pop onto the connectors on the original card? You can try attaching them to the card before inserting the card into the slot. That might make it easier.

It depends on what your needs are. If you don't need more storage space right away, then I'd go RAM, then WiFi, and then SSD. If you think you'll need storage sooner, then I'd do the SSD either first or second, and then WiFi last.

If use CPU-Z or check the BIOS does it says it has a second DIM. Cause many laptops have its first one on the keyboard side. Single Channel vs Dual Channel on Ryzen does make a difference.

Is there any point in raising the capacity of the ram on single channel? Doesn't raising the speed make more sense? Can you shove a 3200 in here? Do you have to change anything in the BIOS to get that to function above 2400?

More memory doesn't hurt, and if your programs can use it, it's definitely wroth increasing the capacity. Unfortunately the CPU can only run the RAM at 2400MHz max. The BIOS is extremely limited and you don't have access to memory settings like timings or speed.

I have read that some of the BIOS updates are important for performance on these machines. However, only update your BIOS if you are comfortable and know that there is a reason. Otherwise the other drivers should be pretty straight forward. What did you DL and from where?

@@Machistmo BIOS deals with booting operations and may not directly impact performance. Updating the BIOS probably solves hardware incompatibility issues increasing performance. In all cases, updating to the new bios is always recommended to prevent BSOD with new hardware. motilecustomerservice.com/

Why wouldn't you use the nvme as the OS drive? You can still use it as storage. The bios has all the options necessary to boot from either slot.

I installed the exact same ram here and my computer crashes during games and other application use. Do you know what is causing this? Thank you. Edit: I also ran a boot memory test that took 4.5 hours and it said the upgrade memory I bought was not faulty as well.

Question why did you replace the wireless card in this PC? It comes stock with Intel AC 3168 dual-band wifi. The stock wifi is better than the one you put in it.

Not "explicitly," but it looks like there's enough space for a 2.5" drive in the void on the right. You'd have to run an M.2 SATA ribbon cable extension/converter from the first M.2 slot (where the original SSD is) to the drive if you wanted to do that. That means you'd either need to make the HDD your boot drive, or add an NVMe SSD and make that the boot drive.

Thank you for this video, I just order 1 and thinking of adding that HP SSD 256 or 512, but read that that SSD does not have any cache on it which causes it slow down when lots of writing, and for a few $$ can get a M.2 250GB PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe 3D TLC NAND Internal Solid State Drive with cache? Which SSD that is 256 or 512 for this laptop??? Anybody?/Thanks to everybody!

You might be interested in an SSD that has a Phison E12 (not E12S) controller. Why TF didn't they put 2 RAM slots for dual channel memory on a system that uses shared system RAM? I would genuinely pay 50-100$ more just for that option. The single channel RAM probably holds the GPU back a ton.

The quality isn't the best, but it's sufficient. The reason you'd get this laptop is because it offers great value for it's cheap price, not because you want the "best" in any particular area. If acquiring this laptop is going to make it cost a good amount more, then that removes the reason for getting it.

I like to lean back in my recliner and put my laptop on my pot belly. I have messed up a couple of Acers by doing this. Looks like the venting of the M141 is all on the bottom. Any chance this might happen on my Motile?

The bottom cover does have a large open area/vent, but the cooling fan exhausts out of the rear of the laptop under the screen. As long as the fan intake isn't obstructed (right side of the bottom of the laptop) you should be fine.

@@TheMrb0908 It's important to connect both antennas. If you're having trouble connecting them when the new card is in the slot, try connecting them before putting the new card into the slot. The wires have enough slack in them to do so.

One is Bluetooth the other WiFi so if both are not plugged you will not have one of the two wireless options.

Can someone confirm single ram slot? And is the 2nd m.2 slot only nvme compatible or also compatible with m.2 ssd? Edit: It appears it only has one ram slot. I tried a non-nvme drive in the second slot and it wasn't recognized and you cannot change the slot settings in the bios. Whether or not the 1st slot can run an nvme I doubt it.

I have the same Motile (M141-RG) and bought the same Viper Gaming RAM stick from amazon, I installed it, and when I turn it on the screen is just blank, not even the MOTILE logo appears. I exchanged the RAM stick on amazon for the same exact model, but 2nd one is doing it... do you think I'm doing something wrong here, or did I just get back RAM sticks?

If you've made absolutely sure the RAM is seated all the way, it's probably bad RAM sticks, especially if it always works again as soon as you plug in the original RAM.

Good video. Would you be doing benchmarks with the upgrades? I ordered this laptop for the value proposition and it's potential. Ill be using it for video editing under 30 minutes, graphics, and photo editing. Just for small marketing jobs. AMDs stepped up with the Ryzen 5 mobile and the marketing names mimicking Intel to make the direct comparisons. Anything I buy has to have some sort of long shelf life, upgradable, and low cost of ownership. The best analogy is like Toyotas truck designs that they incrementally improve. By the end of the 7-10 year product cycle you have robust parts at affordable prices. The Only obvious knock is the single channel memory, but for the price and size no biggy. I'm looking forward to more videos and getting my hands soon on the motile.

I'm not planning on running any benchmarks on the system, mainly because I don't plan on really using this machine for much else other than auto diagnostics and multimedia. For video editing you'd probably want the Motile M142 with the Ryzen 5 CPU and max out the memory (16GB). I'd also think about how the various programs/apps will scale in the next few years and their requirements.

@@FaRKle0079 I'm on the right track then with the Ryzen 5 3500u. So definitely the 16gb Ram upgrade. You put a 500gb SSD in the open slot, so you now have 756gb SSD capacity now? Could I put a 1T SSD if I wanted in the future

@@DanielLopez-qh6ji Yes, you can absolutely put a higher capacity SSD in there. For lots of raw video storage for your work you might even consider a 2TB NVMe SSD (amzn.to/2QAOsDH)! On my video editing desktop machine I don't even bother with SSDs less than 1TB. Additionally, if you get a 1-2TB NVMe drive, clone the boot drive to it, and then make it the boot drive, you can also get a 1-2TB SATA M.2 drive to replace the original drive and expand storage further.

Nvme screw was flushed screwed in by the manufacturer and stripped (would not budge cheap screws) what can I do now. I tried everything to remove it.

If you have a dremel/rotary tool, and are delicate, you can try to cut a flat head slot in the head of the screw.

You don't need to reboot after installing the RAM and SSD. If the installer for the WiFi driver doesn't tell you to reboot, then you don't really need to after that installation either.

@@FaRKle0079 yes. it doesnt show up in bios as well. I switched it between the two slots. No luck, but it seems that it works with yours. Nothing register in the second slot and the ex900 doesnt register in either slot. Only the stock one picks up on dfault slot. =(

3200MHz rated RAM won't show an advantage since that's above what the CPU can do. I'd just get 2666MHz if it's cheaper.

Yeah that memory will work fine. The max memory frequency this CPU supports is 2400MHz, so it'll run the HyperX memory at that lower speed.

Are you finding that the M141 with the NVMe upgrade, is fast enough? (I would get one of the 1 TB choices, and use it as the boot drive. ) The M142 comes with a Ryzen 5 instead of Ryzen 3, but with the $200 price difference between the 2 laptops, I'm thinking that $200 covers all the upgrades ( with the only difference then being the CPU). I'll be tossing the original RAM anyway, and will hardly care about the 128 vs 256 GB on the original .M2 once the 1 TB NVMe is added, but....I'm wondering if the slower CPU is OK.

Fast enough for what exactly? The SSD defnitely isn't the bottleneck when I transfer video files across my network. For a media consumption device the machine is plenty fast. I haven't had any issues with some of the suspension calculation excel sheets I've made either.

We're mainly talking about a school laptop, which will include some use of PhotoShop and the occasional audio and video project, although the kid would naturally appreciate being able to do some gaming on it. I think it's worth the savings of 200 bucks, vs the M142 from all you're said.

@@danmagoo I think for a school laptop it'll be plenty fine. I haven't thrown MATLAB on the Motile, but when I think back to my college days, I was running that on a MUCH less capable laptop...
