Great project jimmy, I really like the combination of the copper & walnut! ou probably already know this but if you're ever working metal and think it might brake because you've built up too much stress you can always anneal it to remove those stresses. I showed how to do it in one of my videos but basically you just heat it up till its red hot and then let it cool naturally to room temperature.

Just saw your vid and I think it's great! You can buy copper in different hardness, half-hard, quarter-hard. But that's not necessary to look for. Copper acts just the opposite of steel when annealing. When you heat copper a dull red and then quench it quickly, the metal is softened and can easily be worked. As you work it it work hardens, but you can soften it again. Say you wanted to hammer the surface before bending it to the tray. Practice on steel, much cheaper, then lighten your blows on the copper, now heat and soften before bending with your dead blow hammer. Oh, sand the pice before bending, leaving the hammer depressions darker. My largest copper project was a copper range hood, 4'x8'x4' at 600 lbs. All hand hammered! Jordan

Just stumbled upon this video (and your channel) today, I really like the copper and walnut combo! I used copper pipe for a ferrule on a lathe tool handle recently, and glued it on while the handle was still in the lathe. It’s walnut but more sap wood. Anyway, I did that so I could buff it on the lathe, came out fantastic. You should try the white scotch brite sometime! Also, consider waxing the copper to maintain the polish, prevent tarnish. Renaissance wax is expensive but you don’t need much at all and it lasts!

That thing looks incredible! Never even thought about incorporating ferrous metals into a cutting board. If you want a wood specific rasp, check out the "9" Shinto Saw Rasp" on Amazon, it cuts really fast but you will definitely need to finish with a plane or sandpaper.

To get the proper radius on that corner you could have flipped the copper around, bent it on the existing corner and then put it back.
@sunandroses1
@sunandroses1 6 лет назад
I was thinking the same thing
@kleinisfijn
@kleinisfijn 6 лет назад
Just start with the free hanging corner. Make one bend, put it on that corner, screw it into place and then make all the other bends.
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 6 лет назад
It wasn’t as much about the radius being wrong as it was the bend being in the wrong spot.
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 6 лет назад
The only issue here would have been getting the seams lined up where I wanted them.
@sunandroses1
@sunandroses1 6 лет назад
Crafted Workshop you could of left the end a little long so you could cut it exactly where you wanted it. Just a thought. AnywAy it turned out great, like all the projects I've seen. I had a house fire 4 years ago, I had more in tools than I had insurance for so all my stationary tools gone. Was really bummed and kinda list interest, but your videos are putting that spark back into me again. I had drillpress, planner, router with table, jointer, table saw. Can only afford one at a time, which one would you get first. I have compound miter saw and skill saw, hand drills, impact, jig saw.

Nice project. An excellent upgrade from the usual cutting board. I like the walnut and copper. I too find my self using walnut for a number of projects. I like pairing maple with the walnut. Like a few 1/4" or 3/8" strips of maple breaking up the walnut field looks good to my eye and would also compliment the copper. You ask about rasps recommendation. I am not an expert by any means. I do like the Auriou rasps. (They make excellent rifflers and carving tools too.) They are expensive no mincing words. But how the feel in the hand and how they work the wood is smoother and less tear out than other rasps I've used. Give one of their Cabinet Maker's or Modeller's Rasps a try.
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 6 лет назад
Thanks Brian! I agree, love using Maple with Walnut. That’s why I put that piece with the sapwood in the middle, to break things up a bit. And I’m definitely familiar with Auriou, but they’re certainly pricey. Might be worth the investment though!

Instead of bending that corner blind, why not just remove all the screws, flip the copper around so that a corner you already bent was in the open corner, and then screw it back down, and finish the last corner that way. This way you know it will line up perfectly, and match the other corners because it was bent around an actual corner. Just a thought, either way great job! If what I said wasn't clear, just let me know and I'll try to explain it better.

Since the board is glued up on edge, most of the expansion and contraction will happen vertically. It shouldn't be an issue.

a tip for the copper bar bending on the empty corner, just bend the adjacent corner, then flip the bar around so the corner you just bent is now the one over the empty space, now proceed to bend the rest of the corners as normal

Couple questions - would you round over the board before wrapping copper in hindsight? Also, when bending open corner, did that marked line overshoot the length putting it out of square, or other way around?
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 6 лет назад
Rounding over the corners before probably would have been fine. And I overshot the length, so the corner protruded past the plane of the edge of the board. Hope that helps!
@afidram
@afidram 6 лет назад
Thanks, bud - that does. Mostly looking at how to get the corner squared up properly. I have the board ready for banding and I've also thought about leaving the corner until wrapping is complete to keep it square. I assume I could take the banding back off and reinstall after nicking the corner. We'll see how it goes - any thoughts as to why that wouldn't work, let me know.

Beautiful gifts! and great video Side note: you shouldn't be ripping those warped boards on your table saw prior to milling. Could be dangerous. Normally I'd keep my mouth shut but important for people to know. Those rips should be done on the bandsaw, then joint, then table saw.
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 6 лет назад
Thanks! And you’re totally right, I was just going for speed and I had that finer tooth blade on my bandsaw. It would have been much safer than the table saw in this case.
@petermitchell5862
@petermitchell5862 6 лет назад
Most experienced woodworkers will disagree. If it's wicked twisted, a quick zip over the jointer will help, other than that, just cut it with the bow down so it's always touching in two places. It also helps to run your table saw blade higher - this will put more down pressure on the lumber as it engages the teeth. A blade that is only just above the thickness of the wood tends to throw things back at the operator.
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 6 лет назад
Yea I don’t worry a ton about kickback since I always have a riving knife installed. The bandsaw still would have been safer here.

The copper is such a tight fit that I’m not too worried about water getting under there. The oil penetrates pretty well regardless, it should be fine.
